Owner description: The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Russian: Музеи изобразительных искусств им. А.С. Пушкина) is the largest museum of European art in Moscow, located in Volkhonka street, just opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The International musical festival Svyatoslav Richter's December nights has been held in the Pushkin museum since 1981. The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts holds one of Russia's largest collections of foreign art from ancient times to the present day. Its modern presentation introduces visitors to the Museum's extensive study collections of toned plaster casts reproducing works of Graeco-Roman art, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Museum also houses original paintings and sculpture, drawings and examples of decorative and applied art. In the halls on the ground floor original works of art are displayed from Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome, together with European paintings ranging in date from the 8th to the 8th centuries. Two halls, known as the Italian and Greek Courtyards, contain casts. The halls on the first floor display for visitors casts of art works from Ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The halls, hung with paintings, exhibit works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Known for its outstanding temporary exhibitions, this museum also has an impressive permanent collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art.

“Worth a visit but smaller than expected”

In this interesting fine art museum I loved the Snyders; Strossi Old coquette; Rubens Baccanalia; some lesser Breughels.Make sure you go to the two buildings and see the impressionist works too. The cathedral is just over the road and you can walk over the bridge and see the massive statue of peter the great

“This museum is as important to see as the Hermitage in St Petersburg”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2013

What a treat this museum was to visit. Do not miss the Impressionist section (in a separate building) of this museum. There are many stairs and I could see no lifts to aide those who are in need. This is a must see attraction in Moscow, for those who like art. Check out the current pre-Raphaelite exhibition.

“A delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2013

I made a beeline for this museum on my one day in Moscow and it wasn't a disappointment. There were some fabulous temporary exhibitions and I particularly enjoyed the Pre-Raphaelite exhibition. The musuem provided a lot of information which really enhanced the viewing experience - information both on the movement itself and on specific paintings.

I spent about 2 hours there but I could easily go back and spend another good few hours to fully absorb the whole museum. I recommend leaving a good chunk of time. It should also be mentioned that there was a very long queue and I wished I'd brought some sun lotion or at least a hat as protection against the sun. I had to wait about 45 minutes for entry. It was worth it though!

The price is reasonable for the quality of the exhibitions and, in reply to other reviews I read before visiting, there were plenty of originals to be admired.

“Filled with copies”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2013

Spend your time on other attractions. This museum had very little original artwork. Half of the pieces seemed to be copies of original works that I'd seen at the Louvre, Uffizi, and others.

“A truly glorious collection”

It's hard to imagine coming to Moscow and missing this gem. Westerners definitely underrate the Russians. The current pre-Raphaelite exhibition is a treat.
