I wish I had more time to spend at this place! The gallery is simply amazing! The portraits span over 500 or 600 years and the collections included all sorts of paintings and artifacts. It will take over 4 hours to appreciate all paintings, so please make sure you have enough time to go over all rooms. Audio tours are available and are really helpful. You can also get guided tours, but English language tour guides may be difficult to book on busy days.

If you start with the Russian icons and iconography and work your way through time you will discover many exciting Russian artists who are unknown to most Westerners. We had a guided tour that lasted 1.5 hours and barely grazed the surface. If you want to see Russian art and have a rainy day to kill this is a great place to spend some time. If there were elevators we didn't see them - the steps are wide and would be a challenge for the mobility impaired.

Along the way to get here enjoy the lock trees where newlyweds place locks to ensure a long marriage.

Thanks to our guide, I now have an understanding of the works from much ignored Russian artists. The Rublev icons and oils by Vrubel climaxing in the Seated Demon were undoubtedly the highlights.

interesting gallery with many old masters from 1850-1950. some very fine works.
took around 2 hours to get around the 40 exhibition rooms, well worth the admission price.

Not quite on the short list for most tourists, but should not be missed. Fabulous collection of Russian art, many great painters who are relatively unknown in the West. Well laid out with many rooms devoted to a single artist.
