I usually like wandering around on my own through an art museum, but I'm so glad we had a knowledgeable guide for the Tretyakov! As others have said, the artists won't be known to most of us outside of Russia, but the art is impressive, and a guide helps provide history and context. Also, a guide can take you to see the Our Lady of Vladimir icon -- the most revered icon in Russian. This icon is in an attached church, but it would be challenging to find without the guide and the hours are very restricted. Actually, the entire collection of icons in this museum is really impressive. I also liked that the museum wasn't horribly crowded and the building itself is comfortable and attractive.

... but I left genuinely impressed. A. A. Ivanov or V. G. Perov - their paintings shows ordinary people's lives, you can almost feel winter's breeze while watching Kamenev's "Winter Road". Absolutely must see!

The Tretyakov is a world-class gallery dedicated to Russian artists and their works. The extensive collection provides a view of Russian history via art from a Russian perspective. I highly recommend visiting the gallery with a guide or using the audio-guide...very poignant and worth the time.

I enjoyed these paintings more than at the Pushkin Museum - simply due to the fact that I liked seeing the history of Russia captured so beautifully. My regret is to have not had an interpreter to explain the paintings. Be sure to buy a the Tretyakov Gallery book as a souvenir! They are very cheap, paperback are around $3USD and hardback $10USD, good quality pictures of the paintings and information to take home with you!
