We stayed at this hotel during the weekend of 10th September 2011. We paid around 180 usd/night, which is not bad value for money in expensive Moscow, but unfortunately our expectations were not fulfilled.

The good:

- The hotel is located in one of the so called 'seven sisters', which are 7 skyscrapers designed in Stalinist style scattered around the city. The building itself is impressive, and has undergone renovation a few years ago.

- Our room was nice, as you would expect in a hotel of this category. It was very spacious, which is more than appreciated in a country where the rooms tend to be small compared to other places. Bathroom was well equipped with a good-size bathtub.

- Komsomolskaya metro station can be reached from the hotel by walking 5 minutes, which is very convenient (also because this station is located in the same line as Okhotnyy ryad station, which is steps away from the Red Square). The hotel's location near 3 train stations (Leningradskiy, Kazanskiy and Yaroslavskiy) makes it a good alternative if you are arriving via any of these stations.

The not-so-good:

My main disappointment with Hilton Leningradskaya, and the reason why this hotel is getting 3 out of 5 in my personal scale, is the lack of service throughout our whole stay. Examples of this were:

- Check-in process was very slow in our case, as there was a tour checking in just before us. This is a situation that may happen in every single hotel in the world, but we were left standing there for 10 minutes without even inviting us to take a seat, or telling us that they would be with us shortly.

- No help to carry our lugagge to the room, and we are talking about two big bags plus a backpack (first 5 stars hotel where I have been in this situation).

- We were initially assigned to a single room, even though our reservation stated clearly that we had a double room with a king bed. Didn't they realize that there were 2 persons during the check-in process? Anyway, we called the reception and after 15 minutes we were assigned to a double room.

- After our first night in the hotel, we were out for the whole day. Upon our arrival, we noticed that the room had been made, but they forgot to leave new towels! (just to be clear: there were no towels at all). Again, we had to call the reception, and a set of clean towels was providaded after 10 minutes.

All of the issues mentioned above should have been registered by the management in one way or another. Certain situations, such as the one with our lugagge or the lack of towels are really surprising in a hotel which prides itself on being 5-stars.

- Even though the bed was very comfortable, sleep quality was not good due to pavement works taking place at night on the street which our room was facing. Looks like windows are not very well sound-insulated (for the record, our room was on the 4th floor).

- Internet is charged at an exorbitant rate. Clearly this is targeted at business travelers, but it's time for Hilton to realize that free wifi is available at many 4-star hotels these days, not to mention restaurants and cafes throughout Moscow.

Even with the issues described in this review, I think the price that we paid at Hilton Leningradskaya was good value for money. However, when you go to a hotel of this category, expectations are high, and here we were very disappointed.

Room tip: Just check that you get the room type which you paid for

On my first trip to Moscow I chose the Hilton, and am glad I did. Since I do not speak or read Russian, I booked their car service to meet me at the airport. The driver was there holding a sign with my name on it. he helped me with my bags, and took me straight to the hotel. This is a beautiful, well maintained hotel in a historic building. Most of the staff speak English, which was a big comfort to me. A special thanks to the concierge, both Alexander, who arranged my private guide tour of the city and Fedor, who helped me with a most enjoyable Moscow River cruise booking. The ladies at the transportation desk were also very helpful, as was reception personnel. Another special thanks goes to Anastasia in Janus Restaurant a charming lady who speaks fluent English. As a Hilton Diamond member, I had a room on the Executive floor. The lounge there provides free computer use, and very good food during breakfast and dinner hours. Also, complimentary drinks available from 6 - 8 P.M. To sum it up I was totally pleased with this hotel , and would stay there again.

Room tip: If you are a Hilton Diamond member, ask for the club floor. While not as high, it has convienent access to the lounge. It will save you a lot on food and drink if you are on a budget, as Moscow restaurants are expensive.

-: charging about 22€ (960 Rubels) for one day of internet (!!!!!) is insane. I do not know why many 5* hotels keep charging for internet conneciton while most 4* hotels provide for free. Shouldn't a 5* hotel have more service instead of less?
And the 22€ per day is just basic connection fee. If you want high speed internet they charge even more! I could not believe it.

-: a bit far from the city center
-: breakfast buffet is mediocre at best; little fruit, dirty floors, very packed

+: extremely friendly staff
impressive architecture

We started our trip in Moscow from checking in to Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya hotel early morning (7am) 17th of September. We just arrived with a night train from St. Petersburg. First thing - no anyone to open the heavy wooden door for us and help with plenty of bags. The lady at the reception was kind to give us a room on the third floor. No welcome drink again. This is my third stay in Hilton this year. The room was nice, spacious and clean. Finally the porter appeared and brought our bags. Fine. The only note - the window is not soundproof and you can hear the irritating noice from outside. The breakfast was excellent as usual and our special thanks to young hostess. Unfortunately I didn`t remember her name. She is extremely kind and professional. We`ve got real pleasure. Great.
Later we coudn`t take an umbrella. Its real problem. I `ve got it only next morning. We asked to change the room and move our bags cause I want the room on the top with panoramic view. In the evening we came back and got our room. Its big and nice but the only problem - we can`t watch DVD film on the second LCD TV in the bedroom. Next day I checked out. I have to wait for 15 minutes to leave bags in the luggage room. The concierge was helpful and competent. Helped us to take a quite cheap taxi to our next hotel. Thank everyone for the service. This time everything is definitely better.

Dear Fedor B,

Thank you very much for your review!

It is a pleasure to learn that you enjoyed your stay with us. Nevertheless let me bring our sincere apologies for the inconveniences that you encountered.

We do realize that our front door is quite heavy and difficult to open, but unfortunately we cannot replace it as our hotel is historical monument and protected by the government. We always try to do our best to help guests with the door - we either leave it open or have a doorman who opens it. Due to the weather situation we could not leave it open; and unfortunately we do not have 24 hours doorman service.

Let me also apologize for the level of noise in the rooms. Indeed, the hotel is exposed to noise as we have the railway stations located nearby, so unfortunately there is not much we can do about that. Still we are doing our best to reduce the problem, so we have installed double windows. We can also offer the rooms, windows of which do not overlook railway station and face our courtyard.

Turning to your comment regarding DVD. We would have been glad to help you if you had repoted the problem and we regret that you experienced some difficulties with player.

Thank you once again for submitting your feedback and sharing with us your impression of the hotel. We will be glad to welcome you in Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya again!

Sincerely,

Joerg Beginen

This hotel is a magnificent building, lots of wonderful chanderliers, high ceilings and some very helpful staff. The rooms are a good size and very comfortable and everywhere is kept beautifully clean. The food is excellent and there must be something there for everyone. The only downside is that it is a distance from the centre of Moscow and there is not a lot locally apart from three mainline railway stations (or Vauxhalls as they call them!) If you are on an escorted holiday the location doesn't really matter as your coach will pick you up everyday. I would certainly recommend a stay here.
