“Wonderful location. Beautiful view.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2011

My husband, our 16 year old son and I spent 5 nights at the National Hotel in August. We loved the hotel! We enjoy history and this is a historic hotel.
The location was terrific. Literally across the street to the Kremlin, an underground mall with shops and restaurants (including fast food and a market), very close by a pedestrian street with a number of good restaurants and even good street musicians. Moscow hotels are expensive so we booked a deluxe room with Kremlin view which they could add an extra bed for our son. I made the reservation by phone through Starwood preferred guests / luxury collection. My advice is if you book through these or another site, call the hotel to confirm your reservation. I was told by phone (and confirmed on a separate phone call that breakfast was included in our reservation.) However, at the hotel, we were told that was not the case. The issue was not completely resolved but the hotel let us have breakfast for the last two nightsof our stay. It is a very nice buffet breakfast with champagne and a beautiful view to the Kremlin. I think this would be especially nice if your room doesn't overlook the Kremlin I would stay here again. The location cannot be beat....we walked almost everywhere!! But do confirm with the hotel your arrangements.

Room Tip: The deluxe higher room with Kremlin view was definitely worth it!!

We stayed in this hotel 2 times on our recent Russian trip. The first stay, we booked the Kremlin view rooms. On arrival, we were given 2 very spacious connected rooms with gorgeous view of the Kremlin. The view was so magical, especially at night when all the tourist are gone and the Kremlin is still all lit up. All 4 of us agree that they have one of the best beds in all the hotel beds we have ever slept in. (We are quite fuzzy with beds) The bathrooms are also quite decent, even a hot tub in ours. On our return leg, our room is facing Ritz Carlton side. The view is not as good, but it is still very spacious and comfortable. (also much cheaper-relatively speaking, Russia is very expensive for tourist, after all they have the most billionaire per square meter. )
Staff are friendly and helpful. (May be except the security, I guess they have to keep a straight poker face to do their job properly) Breakfast is not bad but pricey (no cooking station)
From our hotel, it take only couple minutes to walk to Red Square, Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum and St.Basil's Cathedral. We were able to take breaks back at the hotel between sight-seeing.Also the subway are right at the door, for the sights and restaurants that are further away. Hotel cars in Russia are extremely expensive (eg. $70 USD for a few blocks) and you seldom see any metered taxi. This is a perfect place to stay at if you don't want to visit Russia with a tour group. .

Room Tip: Go for the Kremlin view room if you don't mind paying a little or much more (Depends on the prom...

Hotel National is a prerevolutionary hotel that has kept up with the times. Rooms are comfortable, staff is accommodating and the location by Red Square is unmatched. We were treated like VIPs by everyone we came into contact. Other travelers we met stayed at the newer international hotels, but they did not have the charm, atmosphere and ambience that we enjoyed at this classic hotel.

Great service and lovely hotel very close to the sites.Only problem was the transfers to the train stations which were "arranged by the concierge" at huge expense. My advise grab a local taxi at half the rate the hotel charge.

A traditional Grand Hotel, making you feel as if you step back in time. The location is out of this world - I had a room with direct view on the Kremlin/Red Square... Absolutely stunning to see it lit up at night. It's very central to most of the major tourist locations but also directly at one of the main shopping streets with lots of restaurants etc. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast nice, but nothing really to write home about. However, the hotel is so unique in its history, location and grandeur, that you easily dismiss smaller snags as "part of it". Would definitely stay here again for a tourist visit, for a business trip I much prefered the Sheraton hotel down the road.

The National is a historical hotel with very beautiful classical interiors. At frist I fell in love with this hotel.
But on the second day it was as if I had woken up in a different place. Staff were rude, nobody offered assistance. The taxi was three times more expensive than the average rate, and the hotel itself seemed not so charming anymore. Beware that they charge fro everything, so if you're travelling on business and need copying/printing/faxing etc services, DON'T book the National - everything is very expensive.
The hotel locations is perfect though - just opposite the Kremlin.
