“Very good for Russia and the Area”
Reviewed February 27, 2011

What a relief from 5 days at other hotels in the Russian countryside!

The Budapest is in a very nice location close to sights and many restaurants. The staff knew a good deal of English and was *very* helpful in everything I asked about (Wifi and arranging taxis). It is very clean and has an ornate old world feel while being very up to date. The bed was typically Russian and not as comfortable as American beds but I slept on worse over there. TV had a couple of American cable channels as well as local Moscow selections.

There are no ice machines, but the refridge in the room can make ice. Don't bother with the restaurant in the hotel for lunch or dinner. While it appears very upscale the food is mediocre at best and very, very expensive. Service was excellent, though. The provided breakfast WAS terrific though! Very wide variety of hot and cold, fresh fruit and incredible pastry.

In short, while not a 5 star by US standards I'd rate it a 3-4 star (Marriott-ish) and considering it was a good bargain for that area I'd highly recommend. We will be back there in May.

PS- Wifi costs a bit. Oh, and don't drive or take a taxi there on Friday night. That whole area becomes a parking lot.

Hotel and old with poor air circulation. Left the windows open and got eaten by mosquitos. Beware, all rooms (including our kids room) have a bottle of vodka sitting on the dresser. Breakfast was mediocre. I don't have much knowledge of Moscow but you can probably do better than this.

I stayed at the Budapest Hotel in July 2010, when Moscow was suffering through its hottest summer in 150 years. Unfortunately, the hotel is set up more for sub-zero tempertures (double windows and thick walls) and the tiny air-conditioning unit struggled to keep the room cool. Apart from that, the hotel was perfectly adequate and clean with friendly staff and a great breakfast buffet. The decor is slightly 'old-fashioned' but well maintained. Rooms are on the small side but fine for a short stay. Overall, the hotel seems set up for business travellers but its location makes it perfect for leisure travellers also - only a 5 minute walk to the Bolshoi and 10 minutes to Red Square and the Kremlin. There are a number of major subway stations nearby as well as several good restaurants that offer dual language menus. Room rates are reasonable for Moscow, although you should check Expedia, etc for best rates. Be careful of in-room internet rates which are very high - go find an internet cafe nearby for free wi-fi instead. Overall, a good, comfortable stay in a great location.

Check-in was easy as we had booked through Expedia. Plenty of sights within walking distance; particularly Red Square, and just over the Moscow river, Tretiakovsky Gallery. Our train didn't depart for St. Petersburg until 10pm, Saturday, and the hotel kindly let us leave our bags with them until evening. No problem. Breakfast was great; plenty of fresh salmon, fruit, oatmeal, orange juice, coffee, cereal. Hotel is located on a side street; the main drags can be real noisy. Gentlemans' club next door, though hotel guests appeared to be tourists. Room clean, bed comfortable. Very good value.

I spent four nights here in September, over a weekend plus Monday night. The hotel was virtually empty until Tuesday morning at breakfast, when it appeared completely full. I got the impression that this is a business class hotel, not that there is anything wrong with that.

The location is excellent. Several metros nearby, Red Square a 10 minute walk, right behind the Bolshoi with shopping and restaurants around. Really, you can't beat the location, I would return here for that alone.

I did not agree that the hotel feels run down, I just think it is older Russian style. My room was immaculately clean, the bathroom spacious and with good sized shower. My room looked on an back courtyard and was pretty quiet overnight. I did hear a few patrons leaving early in the morning in the hall, but otherwise fine.

Breakfast was the best I had in Russia. I felt the choices were extensive: three types of granola, coffee/tea, three juices, fruit salads, three hot items every day, pastries, breads, yogurt. I'm not sure what more you could ask for! I always ate well and it got me through to a late lunch.

Service was ok. The weekend staff was more friendly than weekdays. They were quick about visa registration and helpful with questions. Internet access was sort of high, but not as bad as I'd read ($13 an hour or a more expensive 24-hour pass that I did not use).

My only complaint was the bed, which was rock solid. I actually didn't believe there was even a mattress there but rather that was just a box spring! It was very uncomfortable, but usually I was so tired from the day that I was out cold anyway. TV was good, there were a few stations in English, although they were news or sports.

Up the street is Kitezh restaurant, which was good and reasonable Russian food.

The Hotel Budapest is located just behind the Bolshoi Theatre & is great for exploring Mosow on foot. However the hotel itself is rather depressing. The carpet in our bedroom looked very worse for wear with lots of black marks & stains. Dodgy gold coloured bedspread looked very nasty, but the sheets were clean, & the breakfast with its stale bread rolls left a lot to be desired.
The major plus point for this hotel however is the location. We were able to walk everywhere with no problem & really enjoyed our 4 day trip to the city.
Staff are helpful dispie the lack of smiles - a Russian trait I am lead to believe, although they didnt understand my request to print our boarding passes for us.
Moscoe is expensive all round so in reality based purly on location to main sights I would say the Hotel Budapest is value for money.

We were here during the 'volcanic ash' period which meant an unexpected extended stay and the unusual situation of eventually staying in 3 different rooms. One was OK, one was very good and one was magnificent, reflected in their relative prices (high, very high, and extremely high - but this is Moscow and the cost of this hotel is actually quite 'reasonable' compared to other hotels so centrally located). Terrific central location. Historic charm. Very good breakfast with a lot of choice. What was most variable was the staff which ranged from rude and disinterested to extremely helpful and friendly. This diversity seems typical of Moscovites, more so than in most other capital cities. Overall though Moscow is a great place to visit and Budapest Hotel provides a good base. I would stay there again.
