For once I needed to go to Saint Petersburg and I always was reluctant, by plane it is a headache and by train was always a night trip. This week-end I just tried the Sapsan train. I was in business so I cannot comment for the service in eco. First the convenience you leave from Leningradski station which is at metro Komsomolskaya in Moscow and get to Moscow station in St Petersburg. the time is between 4:10 and 4:30 and the service is very good. if you have to go or if you are in moscow and you want to spend a day or two in St Petersburg this train is the solution. Knowing the difficulty today of going to the airport or coming back from the airport, the Sapsan is a dream. I would recommend it to anyone.

We used Express to Russia to get our seats in advance. A must do as trains are sold out. We purchased coach seats and had no issues. Advice is to plan ahead. Know the train stations that you are going to and take subways in Moscow and St. Pete's to train stations, if can. Taxis rip you off and there are no tourist help stations. Know your train #, car and seat #. They will scan tickets when boarding and look at your id's. BRING YOUR OWN FOOD ON BOARD. Stop and get drinks. Sandwiches, snacks before you get on board.

Have fun, train is safe, smooth and fast. A little planning will help make the best of your holiday to Russia.

These trains are actually made by the german company Siemens and are very similar to the ICE in germany. They are modern, clean and comfortable and travel at about 200km/hr. Snack bar on board plus radio and tv. Wifi at a charge. The getting on process in involved with xray screening for both people and baggage and checking of tickets and passports before actually getting on. Having sampled some Russian roads and driving between Helsinki and St Petersburg, I would recommend this as a much better option for travel between St P's and Moscow.

NB There is not much luggage room so pack light. Big cases just have to be shoved wherever in the vestibules and aisle.

Comfortable, fast and efficient. Think about arranging a car at the train station. Cabbies are expensive!

Took the Sapsan from Moscow to St Petersburg. Book first class-by the time they serve the meal and drinks you are almost at your destination. It was comfortable and a great way to see a bit of the countryside but take note that this train is fast ...really fast and sometimes everything becomes a blur. It was punctual and fully wi fi enabled. Will travel on this train again.
