I booked the free tour on my first day in Moscow. Airat, the guide, was excellent - his English was great, and he was extremely enthusiastic about the tour. He gave some good history, some insider knowledge of the sights, and kept the group engaged the whole time.
Note the pace is incredibly fast, so it's worth doing the tour, and then spending some time retracing the stops to spend some quality time at the sites. The group was mostly my age - late 20s, early 30s. I was the only American, but the rest of the group were Aussies and Brasilians.
I also recommend the Kremlin tour, which I did the next day. Instead of Airat, Irina was the guide. They must recruit the most friendly people in all of Moscow for these things. Same deal - she hit the highlights, told funny stories and gave a good overview of the Kremlin cathedrals and main buildings. She even talked the Amoury guards to let us in as they were closing. Definitely worth spending the extra rubles on the Amoury. Note that this does not include admission to the bell tower.
Fantastic overall and highly recommend them.
