“Good value for money”
Reviewed March 8, 2010

Stayed here for 4 nights in the twin room, and found it overall good value. Location of hostel is only 20 min walk to Kremlin, near a supermarket, had hot showers and good breakfast. Staff a little unfriendly at times, no common room area, only one locker in room worked and no lock on bedroom door for short time but fixed eventually. Otherwise nice place.

Chocolate hostel opened earlier this year, and is already a very good place to stay. The value for money is very good - particularly given the location, about 5 minutes' walk from the tube at Tverskaya (on 3 lines - connects you to most places you would want to go), close to lots of cafes, bars and restaurants, and only a 20 minute walk to the Kremlin/Red Square.

The hostel itself is a decent size. The kitchen area is not huge and there is no other "communal" room, and the internet terminal was usually busy but not always. The place was fairly quiet (no real "party" location but the kitchen is open plan so you can hear noise from there in the rest of the hostel) but friendly. There are two shower rooms (one with toilet) and a separate toilet between I would guess around 15 guests, which is borderline but seemed to work OK in practice (we never waited too long). The dorms were clean and reasonably spacious (e.g. our dorm for 4 - which we used as a private (lockable) room for 3 - had 2 normal beds and 1 bunk), and there are lockers in each dorm so you can store your stuff securely while you're out.

The worst thing was the doors to the rooms. These were secure/lockable, but had glass panels, so when people came in late at night and turned on the corridor lights it lit up all the rooms. This was fine for us as we had sleep-masks, but could have been annoying otherwise and would be really easy to fix with a curtain on the door. There was also no power socket in our room: although there were some around the hostel (in the corridors and bathrooms) so not a big problem. Although the place was not particularly noisy, sound does travel from the kitchen to the rooms so definitely worth taking earplugs if you are a light sleeper (as always!)

The best thing was the good location and the friendly welcome (with very nice and English speaking staff) - which included a small piece of chocolate each and a city map with some of the main sights/facilities pointed out. Sheets and towels were clean and included in the price, and there was always toilet roll etc. Showers worked well (plenty of hot water despite generally being busy).

If you are staying here you should also check out the HomeMade Cafe - about 5 minutes walk away across the Tverskaya junction (signposted from Tverskaya but best to Google for their website for directions). Great pelmeni (among other very good dishes) and a nice atmosphere for drinks or food, and decent value for Central Moscow. The local bakery does nice pastries/coffee for breakfast.
