Several years ago we found this hostel to be excellent. Now, alas, it seems to have become a very expensive boarding house. Almost everybody else there was long term and stayed up late at night together then rushed off to work next day.
Also expensive. About 3000 roubles a night - no breakfast

First up, as others have pointed out, the hostel is located in an unmarked, anonymous building. There is no signpost outside whatsoever nor anything on the door buzzer to confirm the presence of the hostel.

Once buzzed in, which will have to be the case every single time you enter the premises since there is no key or card-entry system, you have to go through a downstairs hall full of rubbish and building materials which smells very strongly of paint or thinners or something like that. Up a flight of stairs and through two more sets of doors till you get to the hostel itself. It is apparently your job to close all these doors.

The facilities, dorms and private room are all tired, stained and in desperate need of a lick of paint, a deep clean and renovation.

There are two communal bathrooms to serve the entire hostel. Both have semi-opaque glass doors and one is directly opposite the reception desk. Not the best, if you like a little privacy. The tiled walls have deep mould in the grouting. There is no extractor fan/ventilation and this is the inevitable result. Going into the bathroom after someone has taken a shower is uncomfortable and sweaty. The second bathroom does not have a shower booth, but the shower is in the bath. The washing machine is also located in this cramped space.

I think the staff probably do their best to keep the place clean, but the whole premises desperately needs a re-fit and a re-design to come up to modern standards.

The ridiculous buzz-in entry system means that throughout the night the reception buzzer keeps ringing while the poor reception staff have to get up and manually open the entrance doors.each time.

This place is definitely not deserving of the inexplicably favourable review I found in Lonely Planet. I was told there had been a change of ownership, so this might explain things a little, but it is frankly an insult to charge visitors for the quality on offer.

The only reason it gets two stars from me was for the one or two staff members who I found polite and helpful.

This is a comfortable and friendly hostel. Everyone makes the effort to chat and engage with one anohter. The hostel itself feels homey and so I think this encourages everyone to be chatty.

It is impossible to find, pay close attention to the directions on the website as it DOESN'T HAVE A SIGN outside the building. Which is crazy.

Staff are lovely. A new girl started the week we were there and we returned early to find two guys who had had a good few drinks, she wasn't the strongest in personality to handle the guys but it worked out ok.

It is a good walk to the Kremlin from this hostel there is a metro neaby but many people find the metro hard to handle. I thought it was great but be warned if you are not happy with metro systems maybe find some place nearer.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, and had some wonderful conversations in the kitchen.

Chocolate hostel is really a nice hostel. First of all, it's clean. So, i felt comfortable. Staff is also nice and helpful. Since it's not a big hostel, there is more friendly atmosphere with staff and other travelers. They even sometimes serve you pie and some other things. Location is excellent. Close to metro station and the Kremlin.
Disadvantage can be that it may be a bit difficult to find. There isn't any sign about the hostel.

I really enjoyed my stay in the Chocolate hostel. Its small but cute and cozy. There is a really nice atmosphere in the hostel, you fell more like in a friends place not in the hostel.
The good thing about this hostel is that common room is combined with the kitchen and there is a big chance that you will meet someone to talk to there.
The girls from reception are doing their best to entertain and to gather all guests together. They made a pizza one day for us, and the other day we spent playing UNO almost until morning.
Whenever we hade questions the staff was happy to help us, and the had lots of tips about places to visit.
The important thing before you come to the hostel to read the description how to get there cerefully, because Moscow is huge and people on the streets not always know the street you are looking for, if you will just remember the metro station and the name of the hostel, if you are not lucky you can spend hours searching for it, eventhough its just 5 minutes from metro Pushkinskaya.
There is a small shop in front of the hostel and supermarket 5 minutes away.
There is a cheap restaurant with russian food near metro Pushkinskaya.
The best area to go out - is metro Kitay gorod, there are plenty of bars and clubs.its 30 minutes walking from the hostel, or 2 stops by metro.
I would recommend this hostel to everybody who is looking forward to meet new people and not searching for quite boring hostel.

It's a bit hard to find - they're no signage whatsoever. I went into the courtyards several times, and had to ask several times before finding it.
It seems a bit old, but relatively well kept up.
Staff is decent.
Pretty close to Pushkin square - about 5-6 minutes from it.
