The average and poor reviewers are mainly referring to other Barashkas in Moscow, this review refers to PETROVKA location. This place was definitely the highlight in this time visit to Moscow.
It is cool decorated, with fresh fruits, glasses of fruits on the way upstairs, Samovar with baklava and other delicious stuff. We had cheburek as a starter and a huge green salad with radish, all fresh. Unfortunately the hole has been done in the cheburek, so that the soup was gone, but assume that this has done by purpose - to keep the shirts of the visitors clean :-). The mains were good: fresh made kotletki served with buckwheat risotto (creamy taste combined well with the old fashioned buckwheat) and another kotletki backed with egg. All dishes around 500 -700 Roubles, reasonable prices for a well prepared food. The wines we tried were Vermentino and Chablis, they did not have any Chardonnay and Vermentino was finished after one glass.
This place is a worth visit !

We decided to give Barashka a try based on a few recommendations and also to give us a slightly different version of regional cuisine - Azerbaijan.

The restaurant is relatively easy to find (it is not directly on Petrovka but a half block down the adjacent side street to #20). It has a relatively spacious outdoor section (covered and festooned with many flowers) while the interior is comfortable, modern with an attractive design that includes some stone tiled walls and dark woods.

The menus have English translations and several of the employees are fluent in English which made ordering very easy. Your best bet is to go with the Azerbaijani specialties. Many of these are centered around lamb - be sure to talk to the waiter for advice. I had traditional meat pies to start - you select the filling (I went with meat) and these are served freshly fried in a thin pastry coating - very tasty. Our son had the the Khachapuri - two fried eggs served in a large, thick fried bread with cheese. The portion is huge - it could feed three people - and quite good. My wife ordered the roasted eggplant with tomatoes and cheese - it came with three servings and was also far too much for one person (small portions aren't an issue at Barashka!).

Our main courses also didn't disappoint. I had the ground lamb wrapped in cabbage leaves. It was exquisite and dripped with butter as you took a bite. Our son went with the lamb with ginger and mint sauce (a big piece!) and my wife the baked sea bass which was done in tin foil with potatoes and butter - also very good.

I finished with a traditional Azerbaijani baklava - not too sweet (as is mostly the case with versions I've had in Canada and the U.S.) with flakey pastry and ground nuts - a perfect finish to the meal.

I highly recommend the restaurant - it's a short walk up Petrovka from the Bolshoy theatre.

Restaurant from Novikov's selection. Best food in town, fresh vegs and good selection of fish and meat. Super accurate and friendly staff. Central location. Reasonably cheap for this level of restaurants.

Well located, with modern smart interior. Comfortable ambience. Focus is Azerbaijani food, and this is done well. The pilaff are the speciality and are recommended. All was well presented and restaurant is recommended.
