“Worth a visit if you're near Red Square”
Reviewed August 13, 2014

I was staying at the Savoy and Glavpivtorg was recommended by some local colleagues. The rooms in the restaurant are segmented in a way that you can dine with or without live music nearby. I ate upstairs with a jazz band playing in the background. I found the the food to be good (borscht and stroganoff) plus the beer selection was nice and the band provided a nice atmosphere. Downstairs, a live band was playing and folks appeared to have a good time dancing.

If you're looking for a lively place with some history, I'd give it a try.

“Still there, still the same”
Reviewed August 11, 2014

The Glavpivtorg restaurant near Red Square is a somewhat expensive place with good, traditional food. It is noe a working class sort of place, but rather usually frequented by tourists who’ve heard that KGB agents used to meet here to discuss business under the din. We ate here a couple of times during an extended visit, being smarter the second time to ask for a quiet table upstairs in the back. Otherwise the live music will likely drown out any hope of conversation you might have had. The menu has English translations although most of the wait staff does not speak English. The borscht ("borsh" on the menu, listed under dinner soups rather than breakfast soups) was very tasty, as was the grilled chicken and beef stroganoff. When we were a larger group, bread was brought to the table gratis, and a big bucket of ice was delivered along with drinks. Galvpivtorg looked the same as it did four years ago, and probably the way it will four years (and more) from now.

“Get impression of authentic soviet style Beer Restaurant – worth visiting!”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

Choice of restaurants in Moscow is so huge and one can find definitely whatever he is looking for. GlavPivTorg shall be choice of those that would like to get “feeling” about how things were looking like in soviet times. Namely, interior of the restaurant is some combination of Soviet style offices, libraries and restaurants of late seventies – interesting to be seen. On other hand, menu itself is definitely modernized – namely standard Russian cuisine is present, but with addition of European one (pastas, etc.).
Regarding food taste, no any objections from my side, but nothing to put out as really outstanding beside maybe “fried cheese”, that was really of special taste.
Location is also attractive, considering the fact that famous Lubyanka (investigation prison during soviet time is nearby).
Finally, pricing level is I may say average for Moscow standard, especially if you are paying attending what are you ordering, and if you for example stick to domestic beer, that is of decent quality.

“excellent place inviting friends”
Reviewed June 19, 2014

Located in the center of Moscow near Bolshoi theater. Named from government office in USSR. Glav( )torg meant government trading office. They inserted piv (beer in English) in their name. Inside atmosphere looks like library. So many books on the shelves, mainly Stalin, Lenin. Their tables and chairs are looking as same as the office style furnitures - wooden, green, and hobnails. There menu names are also funny.
In the evening time, traditional bands performing Russian traditional songs.
Good place to drink, and good place to walk around at late night with still sunshine in the center of Moscow.

“So bad - just do not even try.....”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

It is consistent with the image / theme they choose. Music by far too loud, food is very mediocre and the staff working there is slow. No reason to go there.
