Two fabulous meals here. Warm atmosphere and service. Don’t miss the borscht, deviled eggs with red caviar, pickles from the barrel, fried potatoes with white mushrooms (cêpes), Olivier salad with veal tongue, Russian herring with potatoes, and the beef with superb mashed potatoes. Washed down with iced Czar’s vodka, of course. Roger Cohen, The New York Times

I had no idea what Mari Vanna was - apparently is really famous - until I stumbled upon this strange door, with a marvellously bored guy in tracksuit who lets you into what I can just describe as a very old fashioned home, with very old fashioned waitresses, old fashioned plates and tablecloths and so on. The food is, I guess, real local comfort food: highlights have been the ox tongue, a kind of salo (raw pork belly), and the shredded meat with potato mash. Just perfect.

If you want to have a sample of the Russian cuisine in a soviet-times decorated house, go there. Make a reservation. The place gets full. Great service, tasty home-style food, extensive menu with so many options that you must come back. Nice soviet-style decoration brings you back to those times.

If I could I would have given Mari Vanna 6*. Excellent and unique place off the beaten path. We booked table in advance. When arrived we were greeted by strange looking man in tracksuit. As we were saying goodbye to our coats, men in tracksuit asked for it, lady in pink bathrobe and curlers passed by. We just looked at each other and were worried and confused. Only later we understood all that is part of the uniqueness of this place. We were taken to very small table close to the kitchen and on the way we passed cat (Benjamin) sleeping in a basket. Food was amazing, loads of choice of typical Russian dishes cooked to perfection. We also had two bottles of Russian red wine. Very good btw. Value for money is very good. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and decor. We felt like sitting in someone's lounge. Benjamin went for stroll couple of times and when we knocked over glass of wine, lady in pink bathrobe and curlers came to clean it. Toilets are strangely also worth visiting. Very richly decorated and you may also spot Benjamin there as his toilet is next to human one. I also visited Mari Vanna in London which was really nice but Moscow one wins on uniq front big time.

Mom and I stopped by early on a Saturday evening. No room, so we reserved for 6 p.m. the next day. When we arrived the place was already full; we got the little table by the door.
It’s a neat restaurant with the bookshelves full of books, photographs, old cameras and other knickknacs from bygone days. The menu makes one want to come back and try everything. They have menus in English and English-speaking servers.
Do NOT miss the honey cake. It’s one of the best cakes I’ve ever eaten. And their homemade liqueurs are very good too.
