“Beautiful historic landmark”

Reviewed April 3, 2013

A great square, with many things to see. Old buildings, the Cathedral, statues, a beautiful old fountain and many others. You can even feed the pigeons who live there. Many green zones in the middle, with flowers and trees, right in the center of the city.
It also has high importance from a historical point of view, it being the main place where the 1989 Romanian Revolution took place.

Piata Victoriei is a very nice pedestrian friendly square in the center of downtown Timisoara. There are a number of retail shops and restaurants both fast food and casual sit down establishments. It is a nice area to enjoy spend time both strolling and whiling away some time in the outdoor bars - it would even be more pleasant if smoking weren't a national obsession. As in much of Romania, renovation of many of the buildings would improve the area.

This site was where some key events occurred in the 1989 revolution. The orthodox church sits at one end, and the Opera House at the other. McDonalds and KFC have encroached as well. You can see scaring from bullets on some buildings.

The place where the Romanians where shot during revolution. Right in front of another important monument: Orthodox Cathedral. Nice walking place, old fashion places all around.

The history of the square, the dictators balcony and right opposite the steps of the Cathedral where the bloody massacre of the people who started the collapse of communism were slaughtered by government troops
