Grand Hotel Napoca
Ranked #13 of 57 Hotels in Cluj-Napoca
Reviewed October 14, 2013

We stayed here one night as part of a tour of the Balkans.

A former communist hotel greatly and carefully renovated and apart from the vast entrances and atrium so beloved of the Soviet era one wouldn't have known.
Located just a few minutes walk from the centre of Cluj.

There is only free wi-fi in the reception/lobby which was a real pain as everyone was in there trying to access emails and half of them were smoking. There was also some event on with DEAFENING music :-(

Public rooms STINK of smoke :-(

Our room 315 was decorated in a rich deep purple - chairs in velvet and carpet to match along with curtains. Extremely comfortable huge bed and windows that actually opened properly for fresh air.

Very good bathroom with the best and most comprehensive array of toiletries including folding toothbrushes!
Towels were very white and plentiful but a little hard.

We ate in the hotel at night - the meal was acceptable. I didn't care for the soup but then I'm not keen on greasy hot water with vegetables floating in it. Others liked it.
I had a sesame chicken schnitzel which was nice with mashed potato and fresh side salad. Dessert was a delightful and tasty blackcurrant tart.

I felt someone had smoked in our bedroom but maybe it was smoke clinging to our hair and clothes from public areas.

Romania needs to get this sorted out if it wants more western European and North American tourists as this smoking in public rooms and restaurants is unacceptable in the 21st century.

If the Pullman Bucharest can make itself smoke free (with a partitioned smoking area in the steakhouse) then the rest of the hotels and restaurants could try and legislation is needed.

Breakfast was very mediocre - not impressed. Why stick bacon in the scrambled egg and ruin the vegetarian hot breakfast staple?

Would I stay here again? No I don't think so.

Good rooms, clean bathroom, poor quality breakfast. The price from the reception does not reflect the value of the hotel. Seems that the personel (some of them) are still stucked in the comunistic era (from attitude point of view). Location is quite good .

Hotel location next to the large park across from the main downtown area (10-15 minutes on foot) is pretty good. The hotel rooms were just adequate minimal. For some strange reason wifi in the rooms was with a cable. Breakfast was fairly okay although juices were all watered down for some reason. TVs in rooms were tiny in size. Staff were all friendly and helpful. The rooms to the rear overlooked some sort of shed that appeared to be a part of the hotel. Had that shed not been there we would probably have been able to see the local river and the nearby park.

Here for a conference and all that went with it. Smoking everywhere which is overwhelming for those of us now used to smoke free indoors.
My bedroom odd in I had a single bed in a double room with no bedside lights ...and the computer cable was in a wall the opposite side of the room to the desk so i had to work on the floor. others seemed to fare better. Ancient TV with rubbish reception. Decent bathroom and lovely bed linen made up a little . Smokey smell.
Breakfast was moved from inside room to inside room which meant no light or air..and endless smoking. Erzat orange juice made from day glo powder last seen by me 20 year ago,....ghastly. Pallid bacon etc.. A poor effort.
Staff fine and accommodating.
Wifi variable in reception areas but good via the room cable.
It was just OK ..won't rush back

Recently renovated (3-4 years ago), goog location, near the stadium, 10-15 mins walk from centre, decent rooms, very clean, fully equiped bathrooms, comfortable beds. They have small lcd-tvs and poor internet connection in the rooms, only LAN. Decent breakfast.

I agree with others that this is not 4* in the sense that many of us would expect - though I think the staff behave as if it is and their warm welcome and responsiveness makes up for a lot.

The room was comfortable, with a great view, but hot water was difficult to come by and the shower kept falling onto my feet. Food was boring but plentiful. Access to internet was excellent in any part of the hotel (via cable in room, wifi eslewhere and all free).

The general smell of cigarette smoke in all the rooms was not pleasant and adds to a feeling of the need for a good spring clean.

The conference organisation is good but none of the conference rooms have daylight which makes for a heavy going day.

The location of the hotel is great. A short walk from the centre, next to a lovely park and quiet at night for a peaceful sleep.

This hotel doesn't have at all the confort claimed by it's 4 stars It is an old communist hotel,a little renovated and that is all. From the very beginning, when entering the room be sure that it is warm outside because the heeting system is not working in the majority of the rooms. You will receive a lot of different explications and that is all. Very bed services, very durty!
