Excellent basic hotel in a perfect location

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 19, 2012
This hotel recently changed hands and names, and many improvements were in process when I stayed, although they didn't interfere with my stay. The location (right off the main square), and the configuration (two floors of rooms around a pretty interior courtyard, which kept things quiet even on a main street) were great. Reception staff were superb. All of them seem to have been hired from a tourism/hospitality degree program at the local university, and they had clearly learned from a master. They all spoke English and they were uniformly efficient, pleasant and genuinely helpful in response to some unusual requests. One of them booked a return flight for me from Belgrade to Munich from the reception desk's computer and was very diligent about finding me the best price. Another helped me locate some old friends in a tiny Gypsy village 60 km out of Cluj, got me accurate directions there, and made me promise to call him if I wasn't back by midnight (concerned for my welfare, not a pickup:) ). The hotel restaurant is nothing fancy, but it was adequate, and the dining room was open from early morning to 10pm. The gates to the courtyard are closed at 10, so everyone is routed through the reception office, and the parking lot is gated and monitored, making this a very secure location for this solo female traveler. The room and bathroom were basic, but felt luxurious in their immaculate cleanliness, comfortable bed and linens, and the handy fridge. I stayed a few nights and found everything satisfactory.

My sister and I stayed one night here after a very long train journey. The staff were helpful in offering advice on how to get to the airport to pick up our hire car the next day, what we could expect to pay the cab driver etc. The room was comfortable and cool (no air con though) The outdoor courtyard area was being renovated and the staff were apologetic about this but it didn't bother us.
Basic outdated bathroom but it was clean and the water pressure was good.
Breakfast was the usual European cold cuts, cheeses, sweets etc.
Good for a city stopover if you need a place in town. Close to the older, nicer part of Cluj-Napoca (walking distance)
Wifi worked well.

We stayed one night at the Hotel Transilvania. The location was very good - easy to walk to the main areas and sights. We had a basic double room, so it was a little small. The rooms were very clean, though slightly run down. The wifi access worked well and there was free parking in a secure lot in the back. The staff was friendly. For the price this is a decent pick.

Room tip: If you are staying for more than a night, spend the extra money on a bigger room.

I April, we slept three nights at Hotel Transilvania in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Very nice.
Clean and spacious rooms, very friendly staff, and a perfect location, right in the center of town.
Will stay there again on our next visit to Cluj.

Friendly and efficient staff, very clean and secure rooms and brilliant location. My only small suggestion add an extra rubbish bin to bedroom (there is a small one in bathroom). Will definately stay again and again on every visit to cluj - the town has won me over for vacations. Stayed for two nights. Hotel restaurant is also recommended!

We stayed three nights at Hotel Transilvania. Our room was not made up after the first night. We asked that we, at the very least, have clean towels and toilet tissue. At nine that night we went to the desk and there was a plastic bag with the aforementioned items in it. The next day we had maid service. The breakfast buffet was the worst of our tour.

We had a packed breakfast our last morning: two buns with a piece of ham, piece of cheese and a nice ripe slice of tomato - I combined the fillings of both on one half of the bun, ate two bites and threw it out. There was a bottle of water, one apple, two jams with nothing to put it on or spread it with and a processed triangle of cheese. I asked about coffee and was told that it is not possible to make coffee at 3:30 AM...I can think of many ways to make coffee at that hour.

The bed was like sleeping on box springs.

Room tip: Do try the bed. We were on a tour so we couldn't go somewhere better.
