“US Motel in the Indian Ocean”
Reviewed February 16, 2012

About the Hotel:

The hotel facility is rather good (when it was conceived and perhaps also when it was functioning properly). One cannot help getting the feeling though that it's getting to be run down. It is well located close to the Ermitage beach, with swimming pool also close to the beach exit. Food and drinks are rather pricey. You might find notes left in your room from the management inviting you for a welcome/festive drink, etc.. Be careful as you might get charged for these. The water in the room is not complementary either. Room and bathroom is clean and basic. Only English channel on TV is CNN. Annoying that rooms do not have Wifi, but this is available only around the lobby, but very very weak and slow. Reception were always attentive and ready to help.

Food options around the hotel are not so good (when we were there). They are mostly situated on Rue General Gaule. All the ones recommended on here and in other guides it seemed were only bustling during peak season, so most looked run-down making no effort to entice out of season punters. We did try the hotel dinner and another recommended restaurant. We were disappointed for extremely pricey but crappy food. SO, were did like the Reunionais - we had grilled poulet and ate baguette sandwiches most lunchtimes. For dinner, we also tried to end our day with a stop off at St. Pierre where we ate before retiring back to the hotel in St Gilles-les-Bains. We thought dining options were much better in St Pierre.

That said, I hope the new management (the LUX Group, also known as Naiade Group) can make it nice, livelier and functioning again. I wish them good luck.

Room Tip: If you don't like ants, try to avoid ground floor rooms.

Our group tour stayed at this hotel for 2 nights during our short stay in Reunion. The various compound where the rooms were located on 2 floors looked exactly like those motels in the States. Although the room key package enclosed a map of the hotel, it was silly not to list out room numbers for each block as almost all of us got lost searching for our room for the first time. Room was quite comfortable but not large. Location of the hotel right next to the beach offered beautiful view of sunset. There was free WiFi in the lobby area but TV channels were all French speaking. Reception also only speak English but tried to help with body language.

We had 2 buffet breakfasts and dinners at the hotel and the selection (especially main dishes for dinner) was the fewest I had ever seen for a buffet. Many of us ended up just having fruit to fill our stomach. However, the best part about the breakfast buffet was self serviced freshly squeezed oranged juice where there was usually a long queue to make ourselves. Although drinks were expensive at the hotel, it was even more expensive at pubs along the street and so my friends ended up drinking at the bar of the hotel. There was only one guy at the restaurant who spoke good English and very helpful in answering all our questions. He didn't have a name badge but looked like a supervisor there.
.

Room Tip: Request for rooms of block 5, then 4, 3 etc as 1 are the rooms farthest away from the reception area...

St Denis was over booked so the company booked me into Hotel Le Recife. Generally very good, right on the beach and the most amazing reef there! So make sure you have you bring your snorkel if not then the hotel supply'ss free of charge.

Its a place were the French holiday so BE CAREFULL as everything is French (obviously) I was not put off by this as it was an added novelty and it was an oppurtunity to practice my French.

One thing i have to commend is the helpful staff at the reception namely Ursula and her colleaque whose name escapes me, but WOW these two people are an absolute credit to their organisation.

It is pricey in Reunion so beware! especially if you come from South Africa. I was paying approx R70 a draught beer but there is a supermarket very close-by that sells all you need.

Room Tip: one away from the maddening crowds...Speak to Ursula

Well located approximately 20 minutes easy walk to town. This hotel is family friendly and has all the essentials for a base from which to explore the island. It is an easy 45 minute drive from the airport and located on some of the best beaches on the island.
The food was disappointing and the town is the best place to find good food with plenty of excellent restauruants within easy reach. We stayed for a week and only had the buffet breakfast at the resort. The resort has one main restaurant plus a pool side bar. Apart from the food the rooms were clean and upto the task although comprised of dated decor and fittings. The resort was under sale so this may have impacted the general morale of the staff. We had to carry our luggage to our room (don't expect a porter service) I would reccommend a stay there for the budget traveller. The true beauty of the island is best explored with a rental car. Get out and explore as it truely is a majestic island, you will not be disappointed with Reunion.

I stayed here with my wife for twelve days. I was here for a conference for work, followed by a few days of vacation. The rooms were clean and well maintained. The hotel staff was very friendly and was able to communicate effectively. The breakfasts were also quite nice. My wife and I would definitely recommend using the orange juicer for making your own orange juice. Very tasty!

The hotel is located in St. Gilles les Bains, which is quite convenient if you're interested in spending time on the beach. There are quite a few restaurants within a one mile walking distance.

Stayed for 4 nights in August 2010. Rooms were clean, well serviced but fairly basic. Good location on the beach although a 15 minute walk to the main centre of Saint-Gilles-Les Bains. Food at the hotel was OK, breakfast took a while to set up so dont expect a full range of food available at the start. Had a buffet dinner on one occasion (30 Euros). Very expensive and very average. The charge did not include drinks including water (additional 3 Euros). Situated adjacent to great beach that is very popular with locals. Also adjacent is a water park, a few restaurants (much better value than the hotel) and nightclubs. Nightclubs were outrageously loud (all night until 6am) but fortunately in the rooms wasnt too bad. There is a campground next door and how anyone could sleep I have no idea. Great starting location for trips to the Cirques, Volcano, Mountain Biking and Saint-Denis. Saint-Gilles-les Bains is an interesting small town with good range of restaurants, aquarium., beach and small boats. Pool in hotel complex is OK, gym was barely equipped and there are tennis courts. Free internet near reception (20 minute limit with some waiting expected) Overall stay was OK but very expensive - suitable for just about any sort of traveler. But the Naiades website probably presents it in a better light than reality. Recommended on the basis of location, reasonably OK. staff were prepared to speak English (no real resistance to this)
