We spent 5 nights in this hotel during our honeymoon. The hotel is in the most beautiful location, directly on the beach, and the buidlings and the rooms are all spectacular. The swimming pool and beach areas are also extremely well-kept.
We loved our stay at this hotel, but unfortunately did have problems with the service, which we also reported in the feedback we left. On arrival check-in was extremely slow, the service at breakfast, at the bar, and at both restaurants is also very very slow and we often had to make the same request twice. And the cleaners seem to ignore the 'do not disturb' sign on the door...
But in spite of these improvement points we had a fantastic stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the West Coast of Reunion Island.

We spent 6 nights in Reunion at The Grand Hotel du Lagon for our honeymoon in March 2010. We hired a car with air conditioning (you will need air-con) with Europcar and had no problems with pick up and drop off at the airport, despite barely speaking French. I would highly recommend hiring a car to get around as taxis are almost non-existent. Diesel fuel cost approx €0.98 per litre. Get a map prior to arriving or collect a basic tourist map from the airport. Detailed directions to the hotel are essential.

When we arrived at the hotel we were checked in with cold towels and fruit cocktail.
The hotel provided an English speaking receptionist for check in and hotel tour.
We booked a bed and breakfast package with the hotel so we could experience more culture of Reunion. The first night we ate buffet dinner at hotel. The food was not up to four star standards. Dessert was best part of dinner and drinks were very expensive. Water is not complimentary. The Sega performance in restaurant was very loud and continued for a long time. Buffet breakfasts were hit and miss. There was a variety of food. It was just missing little things like sauces and syrups. The egg/omelette chef was not good. One morning he only half cooked my omelette. It was runny and inedible. Coffee and tea are complimentary. Breakfast restaurant opens at 6am, which is very good for early departures. The birds are a nuisance; they even fly inside the restaurant where the food is served. Do not leave your table unattended or you will find it covered in birds and droppings. Buckets of ice are complimentary and will be delivered to your room. The hotel rooms are nicely appointed with balcony or terrace. Our shower leaked water all over the bathroom floor. A quick word at reception and maintenance was sent to check out the bathroom. The leak could not be fixed on the spot, so we were transferred to another room. The hotel offers free WIFI internet with cards from reception. 24 hour WIFI internet is available at a cost. There are three restaurants and a bar situated around a nice pool area. There is no bar service in pool area. You must be dressed to be served at bar. The sun loungers at pool area and beach are all occupied on hot sunny days. Men must wear pants to dinner. The hotel is situated right on the lagoon. The water is shallow but nice to swim in when not very low tide.

As part of our honeymoon package the hotel offered a complimentary romantic dinner in Clapatois (creole) restaurant. A three course set menu including a bottle of sparkling wine. The restaurant is situated overlooking the ocean. An excellent location as it was a lot cooler than the main restaurant. The hotel also gave us gifts as part of our honeymoon package. Lovely vanilla pods, vanilla tea and some strawberry arrange rum.

There is a supermarket and small shopping centre nearby selling fresh and packaged produce and alcohol. 12 pack beer €8, fruit juice €1.50. It is a five minute drive to L’Hermitage town centre. There are supermarkets, restaurants, chemists, bars and nightclubs.

It is a short drive (reasonable walk) from the hotel to the beachside restaurants with plenty of restaurants to choose from. We highly recommend La Manta. The food was fantastic. The restaurant had great ambiance, lovely cocktails and friendly staff. Main meals were €18 to €20, and cocktails €6 each. Lunch at beachside or roadside snack shops is cheap and filling. Burger and fries with 2 beers €10. Most shops are closed between 12.30pm and 3pm. Most bars/eateries will not serve food after 3pm. Snack shops are open all day.

There is a Tourist Bureau in St Gilles les Bains which has lots of attraction brochures and detailed maps. There are English speaking tourist officers. There is a Tourist office in St Pierre on the waterfront where the officers spoke a little English.
There are lovely local beaches about 15 minutes drive south of the hotel along N1A road. You must visit the Volcano. The Volcano is still active but the roads are closed if there is any activity. It is a day trip in a car and it is possible to drive all the way up to Pas de Bellecombe. It is a fantastic drive with winding roads and magnificent scenery. Take lots of bottles water due to dehydration at high altitude. You can walk from the car park to summit of the volcano. It is a 3.5 hour round trip, best done at dawn to avoid cloud. There is a small museum, toilets and bar/eatery at the car park. A restaurant is about 5 mins from car park on descent. We visited La Saga du Rhum in St Pierre. It is a working rum distillery with comprehensive museum on sugar cane production and rum distilling. €7 each entry fee included two rum tastings. The shop sells a huge variety of rums, liqueurs and arranges with handicrafts and souvenirs. I suggest getting directions from the website and/or a tourist office as it is very difficult to find. St Leu is a small surfing town. There are lots of shops on the main street. There is a surf break at end of the main street. Pointe du Sel is a rocky outcrop to the south west of the town. When there is big swell, the water hits the rocks and sprays into the air. You can walk along the beach to the point and watch local surfers on the waves. International pro-surfing tournaments are held here.

You will need to speak French. Take a phrase book (Lonely Plant is good). I found I needed to use it in the hotel at breakfast. The locals are friendly and will try to converse, but their English is limited. There are no money exchangers at airport. You will need Euro before you enter the country.

We enjoyed our time in Reunion and at Grand Hotel du Lagon. I would recommend a trip to Reunion but stay at a 3 star property. Grand Hotel du Lagon was not up to a four star standard. I believe you can get similar service with a cheaper price.

A very good hotel with lots of facilities and helpful staff. Nice swimming pool and next to the beach. Breakfast was very good, we ate at the buffet restaurant one night and did not think it was very good value, fortunately there are plenty of restaurants nearby.

Having travelled to Reunion Island several times it's the first time I enjoy a real resort hotel that all members of the family enjoy. The Swimming pool is really nice, the food at the buffet various and of good quality. The breakfast is perfect, staff in restaurants really helpful and dedicated to their jobs. The only critic would be for some staff members who are not to the hotel standard and are unfortunately employed at the Reception!! Otherwise great holidays, professionalism shown with "stranded Volcanic Cloud" passengers who have been offerred special packages. Our 4 yr old child loved her stay and dreams to be back to the Grand Hotel du Lagon! Very good Quality for Reunion Island standards for hotels
