“watch the breakfast buffet deal”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2010

after an excellent night in a comfortable hotel, we were disappointed with the buffet breakfast that was offered for P250 to each person staying in the hotel. the food variety and general quality of the food is terrible for the price, and the food could be bought for much cheaper across at the 'karinderia' side street eateries at similar quality.

Way back when the Bacolod airport was along Araneta St., Sugarland Hotel was very conveniently placed. It was so close to the airport that the top floor had to be demolished so that there wouldn't be any danger for low-flying planes.

Today, when the modern new airport is 30 minutes away, the hotel seems oddly placed. There are no "tourist-y" places nearby. It is some distance from the malls, markets and commercial areas.

But, the hotel itself is beautiful. The lobby is light, airy and quietly dignified, decorated with the iconic sugarcane plants (The main product of the island of Negros is sugarcane). The bar that is off the lobby is likewise decorated with interesting interior details (specifically, an interest wall in plaster).

There is free wi-fi throughout the hotel but the signal is strongest in the lobby and by the poolside. The food choices on the menu are commendable--comfort food mixed with some dishes that were tweaked by their chef. Their frozen iced tea is perfect for a hot summer day. They have a selection of delicious desserts that can satisfy any sweet tooth.

The rooms are clean and functional. The rooms are pretty but definitely have an "old world" charm. There is cable TV in each room but the room itself is on the dark side because of the dark wood furniture.

The reception staff is very pleasant and also very helpful. Both check-in and check-out are easy. This hotel is easily the best hotel in Bacolod. The competition hotels are either in overly-commercial areas with overly-busy lobbies (not the kind of escape one wants) or too isolated with an odd in-city resort feel.

Downsides: limited parking and location. This is especially so when there is a function in the ballroom. Hotel guests who come back from a day of shopping or eating may find themselves out of a parking slot. But even that does not change my opinion about Sugarland Hotel being the best hotel in Bacolod City.

Over a period of around 10 years I've stayed here several times and it's better now than it has ever been. Rooms were clean, there were pretty, helpful and friendly girls on reception, service in restaurant was good and prices, including drinks, were very reasonable. The only blib on the radar for service was for breakfast; the first morning was ok if a little slow. The second morning we arrived for breakfast and there were no tables set and the waiter made no attempt to set it. I ended up getting the cutlery myself from the service area and we had to ask repeatedly for items which were not on the table.

It is a small hotel, but I think they have used what space they have to the best advantage. The pool is small (but nice) and shared with a buffet dining area. I saw another comment about the fridge in the room being empty, but that's just fine with me. I never use the overpriced mini bars in other hotels. Since I came by car (they have sufficient free parking) , much better to go out and buy your own soft drinks, beer, etc., at Gaisano just a few minutes down the road and stock the fridge yourself.

Free wi-fi.

One of the good points here is that they don't charge for small children. Our 5 and 6 year olds were free, though they don't provide any additional facilities.

If you stay there over the weekend, pop over to the German Bar in Golden Fields. They have a great Filipino rock band on every Saturday night, but take your ear plugs. There's also a Casino in Golden Fields. I'm not much of a gambler, but I have whiled away an hour or two there on the slots.

Overall, recommended for good value and service and the only place I stay when I go to Bacolod.

Sugarland had the look and feel of a old hotel. The lobby area and restaurant were fine, and there was a very small pool that looked more like a little pond in the midst of a small outdoor seating/dining area. It was all rather quaint and charming.

The cafe-restaurant was actually quite good and we had a very tasty dinner there on our first night. The prices were also quite reasonable, though service was a tad slow.

However, the bedrooms were a grave disappointment. The room was small and musty. The airconditioner did not work very well and we discovered by accident that it was actually more effective on the 'low cool' setting rather than the 'high cool' setting. The water pressure in the shower was appallingly low and there was no hot water, or perhaps we were just ignorant and failed to put dial on the primitive water heater located under the bathroom sink. There was also a dead lizard under the sink that remained throughout the length of our stay.

stayed there with my family and friends. the price is really reasonable for its accommodation. their bathroom must be the biggest advantage in their rooms, its nice and well designed!

its close to golden field (night life district) which was very good for us, since we went out almost every night while staying in the hotel.

i think overall its a place to recommend!

The front desk staff was a bit rude and not helpful at all.. He didn't suggest anything and when i made the effort to ask questions, its as if he finds it amusing. The staff who showed us the room did not even turned on the air conditioner, he just put our bags and left. The fridge was empty and turned off. Me and my husband were very disappointed and decided that instead of staying there for the whole week, we checked out after 3 days and transfered to another hotel nearby. Will not recommend to our friends and will not go back either.
