Owner description: The Leyte Landing Memorial is a memorial to the landing of American General Douglas MacArthur and his men at Red Beach. The memorial was erected in tribute to MacArthur’s fulfillment of his promise to return to the Philippines after it was occupied by the Japanese during World War II in the Philippines.

Today I took a jeepney from Tacloban to Red Beach. Very impressive statues of a most important event in Filipino history. It is in a beautiful setting on the water. The grounds however need better upkeep. The pool in which the statues stand was very murky. Be sure to look at the plaques from the leaders of many nations in the "Rock Garden" to commemorate the 50th anniversary. Very peaceful. Not many visitors when I was there.

Another important attraction you should not miss is Leyte Landing Memorial. You can have your pictures taken while repeating Gen. Douglas MacArthur's words, "I shall return." The place was very clean and enough space for parking cars, even buses. I strongly suggest you come here early in the morning or before sunset for better photos. Bring your umbrellas because there are no shades for cover in case it rains.

The Leyte Landing Memorial is a short 5 minute walk from the Oriental Leyte, where my husband and I were staying during a recent weekend visit to Tacloban. The memorial is set in the middle of a beautiful park with large stretches of lawn and plenty of shaded areas, just steps from Red Beach. There were a handful of street vendors selling everything from popcorn, ice cream, sodas to "balut," so you have plenty of choices should you get hungry. Since it was a Sunday when we visited, there were several families with picnic lunches sprawled out in various spots at the park.

I must have been 11 or 12 years old the first time I visited this memorial, and back then, I thought the statues were giants. As it turns out, they really are giants, built 1 1/2 times actual size, standing at about 12 feet tall.

To fully appreciate the significance of this memorial, you need to know a little bit about Philippine History. Here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Leyte

Even if you only have 10 minutes, the Leyte Landing Memorial (MacArthur Park) is absolutely worth the visit.

This is in my opinion a better historical monument than most other statues I've seen around the Philippines. First of all, it's picturesque because of the view of the China Sea as backdrop. It's a relaxing place to visit since it isn't crowded. You can have a picnic beside the park. It's worth visiting even only for taking pictures.

Note: The McArthur Landing Site in Palo, Leyte was created to commemorate Gen. Douglas MacArthur famous parting words “I Shall Return” that he made good of his promise before he left the country after its downfall to the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. This famous event took place on October 20, 1944. The Allied landing on Leyte Island’sea shores was a pivotal moment in the history of the War in the Pacific and in the human struggle for liberty.
Worth a visit.
