“Remembering the US return to the Philippines”
Reviewed October 12, 2011

Having been stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam era, I returned to sight-see more of the country. Just outside of Tacloban in Palo is the MacArthur Monument commemorating MacArthur's return to the Philippines in 1944 after the Japanese invaded and pushed the US out in 1942. Along with MacArthur were members of the Philippine government in exile.

“Do it yourself”
Reviewed June 26, 2010

This is where U.S. General MacArthur and his men first landed in Red Beach. Leyte was also the site of the biggest naval battle that the country has ever seen and it was a fight between the Allies and Japan. Every October 20, the anniversary of the end of Japanese occupation in the Philippines is commemorated at the park with a reenactment of the famous landing, attended by local and foreign dignitaries.

You may go there by public transportation from Tacloban City. Jeepneys plying that route can be found near McDonald's in downtown Tacloban. You can swim as it is a beach but I don't find the water to be that inviting so I gave it a pass.
