“Vacation at Shang”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2008

Our stay in Shang was the best ! The hotel accomodation is great and their staff is very friendly. I also like the foods at Tides and the services is superb. One of the service staff at Tides Mr. Caballes ( i forgot his 1st name) is really excellent when it comes to services. He knows how to pleased us and he is very efficient. But what i don't like is the lady manager Karen, my gosh she's really a snob kind! But generally, Shang makes our stay enjoyable and the fees are all worth it!

This was the best hotel/resort I have ever been to till this point of my life. I swear I will be def. coming back to Shangri-La CEBU again!!!

The best service:
shuttle bus- only 15 min-ride from the cebu airport to the resort, staff have a list to pick us up even you didn't request for the service anyways. only in a minimum charge of $150php per head

Staff- they are SUPERB friendly and helpful and everything. Everyone is with the brightest smile to serve you. You can feel what the best service is. My bf and I are so amazed at these smiles. One night we took a cab from the City back to resort, it was quite a torture to get a cab successfully in the city as you have to bargain price with the taxi driver(they often charge you at least 40%++) and the traffic organization at SM MALL in the Cebu city was a mess. After 45-min ride we finally got back to the resort and the main gate staff's warmest greeting and smile gave us the best support. Just you can see they are really cheerful and professional! I tip them very happily too! haha!

Accommendation- We actually arrived earlier than the check-in time(2oop,m,) since our flight arrived at 3sth am. We planned to have a early breakfast at the hotel restaurant as we have no place to rest. But Shangri-La offered a room for us without paying extra fee as they are fully booked with the same type of rooms. So we can rest in this room and change into the original room we booked. GREAT!!!!! UNEXPECTED!!!

EXTRAS- I e-mailed the hotel to ask whether I would have welcome fruits or drinks as we were staying to celebrate our 1-year dating anniversary. As we check our own room, a bracket of fresh fruits was already there. the sweetest mangoes and bananas and apples and oranges!

We actually check out before we left cebu as we were staying in bohol for 2 days. The hotel did the best as they have this luggage storage service so that we can leave them there and just bring our hand-carry to bohol instead of taking all our bulky luggages to this island. FYI bohol is a pretty place worth going to. They have the smallest monkey in the world and you have to go and see those spectacular chocolate mountain. We had stayed in the beach resort called "lost horizon". Nice stay also.

The hotel offers us a catering/beverage coupon for us to use in any restaurant too! so we can save up like $500sth php.

At first I struggled with choosing the shangri-La and plantation bay while I was planning the trip. I am telling you guys that I have no regrets!!

  • Liked — service
  • Disliked — 45min-ride away from the city so you would prolly dine in the resort to save up the transportation time

There is little that can be said about this property other than the fact that it is as close to perfection that you can get.

All areas of the property (from food and beverage to the spa) are outstanding. A special note that the Chi spa is one of the most unique spa experiences that I have ever had. Each massage client gets his/her own bungalow for the treatment. It is a truly remarkable setting.

We stayed 5 nights that the property and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The property has a regularly scheduled shuttle bus to SM Center as well as Ayala Mall. It is easier to take the shuttle bus (100 Pesos one way and less hassle with taxis that tend to want to rip people off) to Ayala Mall and then take a taxi to other points in the city.

  • Liked — The Chi Spa
  • Disliked — A bit of a distance to city center but well worth it

If you like to snorkel, you will see many fish at this resort. I've snorkeled a lot, but this was like nothing I've ever seen. You are given loaves of bread to feed the fish, but you don't need the bread to attract the fish. The fish are so used to people feeding them, they swim with you - food or no food. Schools & schools of beautiful fish! It was incredible! Anyway, about the resort. I thought it was nice, nice, nice. Rooms are big and comfy. Food was delicious in all the restuarants. We stayed in an Ocean Club room which gives you a lot of privileges like personalized check in & check out, cocktail hour (my favorite), breakfast, use of the spa and much more. The resort is very safety conscious with life guards everywhere. At the beach, the swimming area is roped off with a guy who is always out there in a boat. The Shangri-la is a beautiful resort and many great memories were made there with my daughter.

Overall the Shangri-la on Mactan Island is a large beautiful property and does a nice job appealing to various types of travelers.
I was there for business/pleasure and enjoyed both with nice business facilities and service as well as a definite resort feel & amenities if that was your goal. Also, for families this resort is perfect with several well appointed games rooms for kids + gigantic ball rooms & Slides + nice kids pool, mini-golf, etc.. . I have not seen many hotels cater to all 3 groups well and the Shangri-la comes as close as any.

Pros:
- 4-5 large pools (including 1 endless pool)
- Children’s pool with water slide and play area
- White sand beach (I heard that the white sand is shipped in vs natural) with activity rentals available and a nice beach bar
- Several restaurants – Highly recommend the Italian spot by the endless pool and the Seafood Restaurant sitting right out over the water
- Very nice open air Lobby
- Great Lobby Bar (open air) and a fantastic spot to meet friends for drinks/light meal – Recommend the Mango ‘Mai-Tai’
- Fantastic Facilities for Kids/Families

Cons:
- Rooms are fine, standard quality, but not on par with the Shangri-la’s in Manila (Edsa & Makati)
- Hotel is a little isolated. i.e. not really walking distance to anything (except the Hilton) so if you are prone to cabin fever this may not be the place for a long stay
- Highspeed Internet may/may not be included depending on your rate (ask at the Front Desk at Check-In)

Inside Tips:
1.) The Shangri-la Resort in Cebu is technically on Mactan Island which is ~30 min drive to Cebu City so keep that in mind if you are planning to commute back & forth
2.) Both sides of the hotel seem to face the water as the hotel sits on a island so I had a “garden view” room, yet had a water view. I believe the “ocean view” rooms would likely face the pool side with the beach view. This might help if you are thinking about whether to upgrade.
3.) If you are debating between the Shangri-la and the Hilton (next door) the Shangri-la wins hands down. The Hilton has a distinct early 80’s feel and from a common area perspective seems in dire need of update.
4.) There is a dedicated Shangri-la welcome center for the resort at the Cebu Airport in case you have any questions when you arrive

Overall we enjoyed our stay and the hotel, but there were some issues, mainly with service.

We checked in on Christmas Day and stayed for 3 nights. We came from a nearby island and arrived at the hotel about a half hour after the official check-in time. After several minutes of waiting, we were told that the Ocean Wing garden room reserved for us in the system was not ready, that another room could be ready in about an hour, but that this room had twin beds. When we said that a twin would not be acceptable and that if we had to wait another hour it should at least be for the type of room we’d reserved, a king room materialized immediately – one with an ocean view. Is it the Shangri-La’s general policy to try to downgrade guests before giving in to an upgrade?

Once we got past this unpleasant beginning, we had no complaints about the room. It was lovely and so was the view. The hotel grounds are pretty and expansive. Neither of the pools seemed overcrowded even though the hotel was full. Although we were just about the only people there without small children, we never felt that the hotel was 'overrun'. It's a big place, and the kids were charmingly well-behaved. :) We had fun with them at the eZone (the games room) and we also enjoyed the 6-hole pitch and putt golf. (Needless to say, the course is not for serious golfers!) The fitness room was decently equipped and well-run; service there was excellent.

We had reserved only a bed and breakfast package rather than the ‘value vacation’ package. The latter was around $70 more per night and was advertised as including buffet breakfast, buffet dinner, buffet meals for children under 12, free internet access, and unlimited laundry. Since we don’t have children and didn’t want to eat buffet dinner every night, we thought it wasn’t worth the extra money. But the morning after we checked in, when we went to inquire about the self-service laundry facilities, a staff member told us that the package would allow us a $70 credit at any of the other restaurants instead of eating dinner at the buffet. This obviously made the value vacation package pay for itself, and the staff member was helpful in switching us over and crediting us back $70 on the dinner we’d had the previous evening and the $25 we’d already paid for 24 hours of internet access.

Now that we were on the value vacation package, we no longer had to pay ~$15 to wash and dry a load of laundry ourselves in the laundry room. We could just send our laundry down, as much as we wanted, and it would be washed, dried, and folded for us at no additional charge. Sounded wonderful! The hotel said that laundry sent down before 10:00 am would be back by 6:00 pm, and that was the case with the load we sent down the first morning. (Although we did get it back with two pairs of other peoples’ undies). But the load we sent down the second morning was not back that evening. We called and were told it would be back by 9:00 am the next morning. It wasn’t. We needed to check out around noon, and - after multiple calls downstairs where we were told they’d call us right back but didn’t – it was delivered to us minutes before we had to leave for the airport. A close call and pretty stressful.

The food at the Shangri-La was very good. We had the breakfast buffet at Acqua every morning and there was a great selection. Had dinner twice and lunch once at Acqua and it was delicious. (The hotel had made a Christmas night reservation for us in advance after I e-mailed). Even the buffet dinner we had at Tides was above average. We had lunch twice at the Buko Bar & Grill – the food was good, but it was very crowded and the service was a bit haphazard both times.

I would consider this to be a 4-star resort, not 5-star, but the rates were also more in line with a 4-star hotel, so this seems fair. My only big complaints were check-in and the laundry fiasco. Other than this, we had a pleasant stay. The kids there seemed to be having the time of their lives – there is a lot for them to do. I think this is a great resort for families. I would recommend the Shangri-La to anyone who lives in the region or needs to be in Cebu for a particular reason, but I wouldn’t advise traveling a long distance to vacation there.

We stayed in this hotel over the New Year. It is a nice hotel with lots of activities for children. Great for families, however, it is quite pricey. To launder our clothes cost $400 - kind of took us by surprise, especially, when we found out we could launder our own clothes at the in house laundromat.
The gym was well kept, the grounds are well kept. Hotel is very clean and kept up. We even attended the "Barrio Fiesta" on Tuesday night. They served typical Filipino food, which was delicious, not sure about the authenticity of the dances/dancers, however, I was glad we chose to attend the show.
Overall though, the $ were well spent. Our children had a great time. We loved the breakfast buffet, everything imaginable on the menu. We also loved the beach access and kayaking for the kids. The pool was adequate and I was grateful for the covered kiddie pool for our little one. (great protection from the intense sun, that even sunscreen could penetrate)
I would recommend this hotel to anyone, although, beware you will spend a great deal of money.

  • Liked — A one stop locations
  • Disliked — There was limited shopping in the hotel, not too much variety of merchandise. We attended a New Years Eve dinner/dance required by the hotel and the attire was suppose to be white. The hotel stores did not have any white attire. We wore black.
