“Ambiance is better than the food”
Reviewed February 8, 2014 via mobile

...and the food was quite good! The ambiance, however, is spectacular. The seafood risotto was ok...a little soupy and without nuance. It was by no means a disaster but also not memorable. My partners veal pasta was also good...but not outstanding. Would I go back...absolutely. Would probably order other dishes but the restaurant does deserve commendation for service and atmosphere.

“Food is Delicious!”
Reviewed February 5, 2014

We went here because of the reviews on trip advisor. The food was delicious. My husband had pork belly for the first time, on the recommendation of the waiter, and he loved it. I got the tuna and it was prepared perfectly! One downside, we were a bit disappointed by the ambiance. It is nice but we were expecting a romantic setting. The nicest highlight was the Chef. He came out and talked to every table. Made us feel very special.

“Best restaurant in the area-- excellent break from Shanghri La's mediocre and over- priced food/service”
Reviewed January 25, 2014 via mobile

A friend from Manila recommended this place. After a few disappointing meals/service at the Shangri la, we booked dinner here for our two families. It was the highlight of our stay in Mactan...the food and service ( and price) were so good that we went back every night for our entire stay....and were more and more pleased each time as we explored the menu...

The restaurant is set outside (covered) in a beautiful quiet garden location just up from the beach. It is not large so you should definately call ahead. We were a big group-- 4 adults and 5 kids--and were welcomed warmly by the staff who suggested several great dining options for the kids ( there is no explicit kids menu). Staff and chef were happy to cook gluten free pasta we brought for one of the kids. One then next evening's visit the chef had thoughtfully made a loaf of gluten free bread for our one boy!!

For such a small place, the menu options covered a good selection. Main courses included 2 different types of fish, lamb, pork, beef and chicken, and pizzas cooked in the wood burning oven. We worked our way through the entire menu during our repeated visits and were amazed at the consistency of delicious flavors and high quality. Favorites were the sesame encrusted tuna....lamb shank...roast chicken...and Aussie beef. Starters and pizzas were also great! My sister and I loved the clams starter. We relished in trying to figure out what mix of ingredients were used to create the divine flavors!

The chef -- an Australian who had a long list of experience in top restaurants-- was such a doll. He checked in often to greet us and get feedback. Everything was perfect...

Staff was helpful and knowledgeable about wine and food, and brought home made ice cream over for the kids after each meal...

For guests at the Shanghri la, it can be hard to get taxis to come to the resort....the resort has a strange policy if not encouraging guest to take taxis--maybe the want to force guests to take their very expensive hotel cars... Anyway, the quickest, cheapest way to get to abaca-- only 1 km from the resort to your right from the entrance-- is to get hotel staff to bring you to the entrance on a golf cart ( or walk there) and hop in a cab or any jeepnie going in the right direction ( towards airport). They will drop you off at abaca for 9 pesos per person. You might even be able to ask abaca to use their shuttle van.

“Great restaurant and a nice break from the Shangri-La”
Reviewed January 24, 2014

Excellent menu with a wide range of choices, very good prices on the drinks (compared to the Shangri-La) and overall a wonderful dining experience. If you're staying several nights at the Shangri-La you definitely need to break out of there one night and try Abaca.
