“Pleasant Hotel to Stay while in Cebu”
Reviewed March 20, 2014

Visited Cebu on a short 3 days trip. The location is next to Ayala mall and rather central. There is a local restaurant near by called Kuya Jo and it serves fantastic local food.
The hotel has specious room, new and provide good services. I would have like the floor to be carpeted to make it less noisy and cosier but the marbled floor, I supposed, is easier to maintain and up keep.
The gym was basic but spacious.
On the whole satisfactory and would highly recommend this place to people visiting Cebu.

When I cam back from my trip to Palawan it already got late and I was in need to find a hotel to stay for the last 2 nights in Cebu. That brought me into the Mandarin Plaza Hotel next to the Ayala shopping mall, maybe this gives the hotel the attention which it didn´t deserve........

First surprise - the people at the reception said after 6:00 p.m.it´s not possible to see the room.

2nd surprise - Standard is only a smoking room and if you want á non smoking you need to take the Deluxe.

Well I took the Deluxe and how to say - the room is the same like the rest of the hotel, cold atmosphere, the stuff want to shine professional but they´re not and the poor breakfast buffet make the stay with them not worth even they discount the price.

The pool was dirty and it was not possible to use it for a swim.

Room Tip: Even you pay a bit more choose oone of the neighbour hotels... or choose an other area,a suggestion...

Feb.7,2014. Stayed for 3 nights to meet up with friends in Cebu and stayed in their Deluxe room. I called a day before regarding early check in so that went well when I arrived at 7am for a fee of course of P1000 with no free breakfast included. The staff at the front desk were courteous and friendly. The room was decent in size, still a lot of room to move around and both bedroom and bathroom were clean. Went to get some shuteye but was awoken by this annoying sound of the housekeeping's walkie-talkie. They really have to find a way to communicate as this went on for the next 3 days around the same, 10am until 11am. Availed of their "free" breakfast buffet on the 2nd and last day of my stay and it was just "ok" . Same menu, no refills but at least the staff were pleasant and multi-taskers. At this point I would first wait to see some changes to the above mentioned before returning to Mandarin.

The hotel is clean and the room comfortable enough but that's it. The room was dark and the airconditioner took a while to work. The smell of smoke was wafting into our room from down the hall through a big gap on the bottom of the door. We had already unpacked otherwise we could've asked for another room. I ended up putting a towel across the bottom of the door before anyone from maintenance could respond.

It was nice to have a buffet breakfast included with our reservation but didn't realize we had to clear and set our own table. There was also a shortage of food, drinks, plates and cutlery. I'm not sure if it is like this all the time but there were only 2 people working at the restaurant. There was a conference going on when we were there so most of the staff were up there.

In spite of the shortage in manpower, the staff that were there were doing the best they can. They were still smiling, working hard, while apologising for their superiors' bad planning.

Room Tip: When you want a "No smoking" room, stress that you want it on a no smoking floor. Ask fo...

Our morning started at 7am with the shrill blare of the housekeeping's walkie talkie which was attached to a cart parked outside our door for an hour. Every communication thundered through the room.

Next was the highlight - breakfast. This hotel offers an interesting experience. You can queue up for breakfast and shuffle past the only staff member on duty. Once you get inside you can choose from many tables. The only problem is you have to clear and clean them yourself. There were many parents standing around helplessly holding their infants and one family opted to eat standing up.

I asked where the staff were and was told the Manager and other floor staff were upstairs attending to the food for the conference attendees. Nice to know where you sit in the order of importance in a place like this. The breakfast offering was rank with tepid omelettes that were more shell then egg and result in a lot of spitting out of food.

Other nuisances include needing two or three goes to get in an elevator as they are always full. Rooms are clinical and a decent size but thats not enough to push this from a bottom rating. There are much better options in the area.

Room Tip: Avoid the elevator area or house keeping depots

I've just stayed there for two nights. The room was stylish and very clean. However, it came without carpet like the corridors, this created a lot of noise. Especially during the cleaning time, because the walky talky from the cleaners was on all the time. It gave me the feeling that I was in a departure hall from an airport. Advantage is the close location to Cebu's most famous shopping mall Ayala. There you can find plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants. Very nice open concept.

Arrived at the hotel at almost 8am. We asked what time would be the earliest available checkin. We were surprised that they were charging us 1000php for check in even at 12nn! We decided to pay for it anyway since we were tired from the early flight. Upon entering the room the first problem was that the power switch for everything was broken. I called front desk to report it and was told that they would send someone up to check it. After a few mins, a technician comes in with screwdrivers and all and starts working at it. I was frustrated for we were stuck at the room with no power for 20 mins and we couldn't even use the comfort room. I called front desk again to request transfer of rooms and the receptionist just said that if it was really broken then that was the only time that they would transfer us. It took almost an hour and after getting really pissed off at the employees, that was the only time they transferred us to a room right next to us. How hard was that right?? Another thing, the bath tub drainage isn't working properly and you're stuck with dirty water up to your legs when showering. This so-called hotel is a truly not worth it. Paying the extra 1000php we expect the room to be ready and functional. Quality and service is really bad. There are so many other hotels right beside in the same price range that are way better. Do not be fooled by the good reviews. Not only that but your sleep will be constantly disturbed by the construction nearby and the constant knocking of housekeeping to check on for god knows what :| Lastly, wifi and shower heater in our room did not even work! Breakfast was also not good. WARNING: DO NOT STAY HERE.
