Not one of my favorite places. I found the educational lecture before the tour to be a bit boring. But the butterflies were nice once I got to go on the actual tour.

The facility is old, but well worth the time to visit. 50 Piso each entrance fee (about $1.25). Mr. Jumalon must have been a genius. His daughter took us on a private tour. Take a cab, but make sure the driver knows where he is going, It is on Marcopa street, Basak, Pardo. It may look like the place is closed, you have to ring the buzzer until they come to the gate. Depending on the time of the year, you may or may not see many butterflies. This place is not really a commercial enterprise, it is a labor of love by a family. They are struggling financially to keep the place open. The founder Prof. Julian N. Jumalon was an artist that trained himself to be an entomologist and scientist. Most scientists are lucky to find even 1 new species in their whole life. He found 24 ! There are 5 butterfly species named for him. He was also a fantastic artist. You will see his artwork there too. The place is very simple, but really worth the trip. I recommend giving them a healthy donation to help keep this place going, it would be a shame to see it fail. It is a treasure. His daughter is getting pretty old, I hope someone takes over that is as knowledgeable and dedicated as she is. Bring your camera, but no flash allowed, the light damages the colors of specimens. Remember, you are in the Philippines, don't expect a U.S. museum experience. What this man did with his life in this poor country is truly amazing.

Upon arriving, a mascot opened the door of the van to welcome us. Not sure if it is a caterpillar. More like a butterfly without wings for me. Entrance fee is around 40 pesos. The thing that made this place more special than any other butterfly farm I have been so far are the very friendly tour guides that are (warning) very very hilarious. You will surely laugh your heart out. They will even catch a butterfly and put it on you and take pictures of you. They even know how to take trick shots. They took picture of us like we have butterfly wings. Nice landscaped garden. Has huts so you could rest, duyan and a small canteen. They also even have a small souvenir shop.

During my stay in Cebu I visited the butterfly sanctuary. Easy to reach by taxi, or jeepney + 5 min walk. Ringing the bell on the butterfly-decorated gate calls out the the old lady who greets you with her warm smile.
Immediately she will show you inside her house and walk you through her butterfly collection. Be prepared for an overload of information about the different species, locations and all other inside information you can imagine about butterflies.
Now when you go outside, immediatly I saw fluttering around the most colorfull butterflies I have seen. I came in early morning aroun 8am, it's supposed to be the best time for spotting the butterflies. Most of them are free to come and go, and won't stay in the garden the whole time. Also you can view the cocoons in the different stages of the transformation from a caterpillar to butterfly.
Be sure not to miss out on the gardenhouse in which the butterfly art from Jumalon is stored. I have never seen "paintings" with such detail, alle made form the wings of butterflies!
All and all, a great spending of a morning in Cebu.

I never expected that butterfly wings ca be used as medium for painting through mosaic way of doing it. A real art indeed and very rare to find artist who can do such a thing. We brought our students there and they were amazed of the simple place yet very informative.
