“Amazing Santo Nino Shrine”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

Visitors are awed by the tiny Santo Nino which is venerated on a beautiful altar. How could this little shrine attract millions of people? We looked and marveled at our religiosity.

“Fascinating!”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

Its a huge compound. The main basilica that houses the image of the Santo Nino or child Jesus from the year 1521 is now too small to accommodate all the mass goers so they constructed an outdoor mass area across from the basilica. There are bleachers and a covered seating area.

The wall behind the main altar is amazing as it holds multiple images of saints encased in glass, the antique statuette of the child Jesus included.

Towards the back of the basilica, to the left of the sanctuary, there is a line leading to the enclave where devotees can pray to the Santo Nino replica up close. The lines can get pretty long on Sundays so get there early or line up when mass is ongoing.

Notice that as the faithful visit the image or even just peek in as they pass by the doors of the basilica they wave to the Santo Nino in greeting as they would to a little boy they are fond of. There's a gift shop to the left of the basilica entrance and a lovely pocket garden / courtyard on the left side of the church. Light candles and pray. The image is said to be miraculous.

Enjoy the magnificent view inside the ancient church. Lack of shady area for visitors to take a breather.

The treasure of Cebu! The place has a lot of history. Although it was busy a lot of devotees but it was sure breathtaking during the mass.

Now this church looks like the one in vatican city...Scary stories about thieves linger so be guarded always even if entrance are visible with security guards.
