Owner description: This is the spot where Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross in the soil in 1521 and claimed the Philippines for Spain.
Reviewed February 14, 2013

Magellan's Cross is a small structure with a big cross inside and a painted ceiling. It is located just outside the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino. There are lots of snatchers and beggars outside so be careful!

According to history books, this is not the real cross nor the real place where Ferdinand Magellan planted the cross in the Philippines. It is believed to be somewhere else (another island in the Visayas region).

If you have plans of going to the Basilica, you might as well visit Magellan's Cross. But if you do not have any plan of dropping by the area, it wouldn't hurt not to visit Magellan's Cross.

You want to stop by Magellan's Cross when you are in Cebu. The cross dates back to the 1520s and a short walk from the Basilica. You can see these two sites & Fort San Pedro at one time. Lovely area in Cebu.

The people husling to sell drive you crazy and the fact that the cross is encased in another cross take a lot away from the history

We visited Magellan's Cross. There is not much to say about it really..........
Combine it with a visit to the Basilica nearby.

It is very near to Sto Nino church so you can just drop by to see it. There are a lot of people selling different color candles. Apparently, people buy from them and place on the altar of the Cross. I think it is a 15 mins attraction and you can proceed to Fort San Pedro afterwards. It can be a package where you view Sto Nino, Cross and then San Pedro. The security guard is very friendly and point to me the way to San Pedro.
