“Good hotel away from downtown”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

Stayed two nights on a business trip. It is located at the back of SM Mall in Lanang area. Very convenient if you want to stay in a good hotel near the airport. Just your basic hotel, modern setting, with medium size pool, basic toiletries, bathrobe, safe, TV, wifi, refrigerator. Bed is great for a good sleep, linens are clean, extra pillows in case you need one, ample parking space, good security (you will need your room card to access the floor of your room in the elevator). Hotel restaurant is OK and prices are good, if you don't like it, there is a walkway from the hotel to SM where you can choose other restaurant. Breakfast buffet is great, lots of choices. Hotel staff are OK too. Very quite since it is located away from major roads. Since it is relatively new, taxis are not yet familiar with it, sometimes its better to go to SM and get one rather than wait in the hotel lobby.

This is the second time we have stayed at park inn, the first was last month, we had a wonderful stay during the first, but this second stay was a bit disappointing, drain of shower was not working properly, if you take a shower one after the other, like our 3 kids, the water overflowed.

Park Inn at Radisons is a fairly new hotel that opened just months ago. The hotel offers a promo rate that they claim is half of their regular rate of P2940 net, after taxes etc. This rate can be had by booking online or even as a walk in guest if rooms are available. Booking online is fine, but they will charge your card and the exchange rate may impact your final rate.

The hotel has many positive reasons to stay there. Location is right next to Lanang SM with a connecting bridge. There are many places to eat nearby or part of the mall complex, with new places opening on the boardwalk of SM daily. The staff is very friendly and seems to really try to assist to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Breakfast is included in the said daily rate, buffet style. The buffet does not change at all from day to day so it can and will get a bit boring for longer stays. We skipped it a couple of mornings for this reason. The Wi-Fi internet worked well. The pool is not big, but has very comfy chairs and free pool towels. The area is clean and they even have some chairs that sit in the water area above the deeper part of the pool, which is pretty nice. The hotel will give you two 300mg bottles of water daily, if not ask. The housekeeping can (and did) forget.

Some of the negatives are more of an annoyance than anything else. The sheets are changed every other day which is fine, but the budget hotel that we stayed at for 1/3 the cost downtown changed the sheets daily. This is not a big deal, but worth mentioning. We felt the rooms were not cleaned as well as we would expect for this type of a hotel. I hope half price promo room rates, do not mean half cleaning. The carpets, bathroom floor and shower were apparently never cleaned the whole time we were there. The closet has a light that never turns off; this was bothersome at night as even though the doors were closed light came thru. If you are a light sensitive sleeper, like my hubby, when you sleep, it can be a hassle. More than once, there was banging noise, started lightly at 730 and by 900 am it was louder. There was construction or repairs going on some place close by. We reported it to the front desk, but it continued the next day. The air conditioning worked great, but there is no off and on switch, so we found ourselves constantly fiddling with the temp control to keep the room comfortable. We would have preferred to just turn it off at times.

Getting a taxi (meter) means asking the front desk to call one for you, but it can take a bit of time for the taxi to get to the hotel, so allow extra time. The hotel has a car service, but prices are triple what a meter taxi will charge you. If you want to go out after the mall closes, you can not cut thru the mall to the street up front where there are many places to eat (try Penangs). It’s a bit of walk and a hassle but too near to call a taxi. The street around the perimeter of the mall leading out from the hotel is not well lit. Speaking of taxis, most drivers still do not seem to know where the hotel is, so keep the name and address in your pocket, especially when you arrive at the airport. Taxis in Davao are very safe seemingly and never a problem with meters etc.

One of the bigger hassles is that the key card is required for the elevator. Its great for security, but if that card sits next to your cell phone (demagnetizes they say), gets wet or whatever getting up in the elevator will not be possible Even when it works, it’s a bit of a hassle with the doors closed and trying to get the key card to work so you can press your floor before the elevator goes in the opposite direction that you want.

Without doubt, the best room to have is in the back of the hotel, higher floors. We checked them out and they have a view of Samal Island and the surrounding bay. Overall, I would rank this hotel as good but due to the TA ranking system, I am forced to rank it as very good. And at this price, as a promo it’s a good deal and worth a return trip. The only reason I am hesitant on higher ranking is the noise we heard early morning and the cleaning issues of the room, which no doubt will not be a continuing experience. With that said, with the promo price, its maybe one of the better hotels to stay at within this price range and we looked around and also stayed at several places. If this hotel drops its promo rates, doubling its price, the ranking for this hotel would have been lower.

Room Tip: Rooms in back, better views, higher floors.

I had been staying a few nights at a 5-star hotel in central Davao, but as I couldn't extend due to high occupancy I had to look for a new place to stay. And what a positive surprise it was. Park Inn delivered way above its 3 stars and devalued the other 5!

Park Inn is a new hotel with clean modern rooms and comfortable beds. Decor is trendy and the hotel has a positive vibe to it. I noticed how quiet it was in my room, which can be rare for Philippines. Location may be a deal breaker for some, but there is a brand new SM mall next door directly connected with a walk way and taxis can take you to the city for a small amount. Conveniently the hotel is close to the airport and Sasa Wharf for trips to Samal Island.

Park Inn had everything I needed. Pool was on the smaller side, but still big enough for a few strokes (I used to compete in swimming). No caveats with buildings blocking the sun, so it's a good place to get a tan as well, if you're into that. If not, there are umbrellas and plenty of possibilities to stay out of the sun.

The in-house restaurant RBG provided the breakfast buffet in the morning and had plenty of options as well as healthy. I had the chance to try out RBG in the evening as well and found their prices extremely reasonable. It was a pleasant surprise to see prices in their menus WITH tax and service charge. Food was great - I can recommend the Wagyu Beef, which only was around 600 peso. Restaurant staff appeared attentive, efficient and smiling.

The only minor issue was perhaps at check-out, which was a bit slow not least due rush-hour at the front desk.

I would not hesitate to come back and stay here instead of the hotels in downtown Davao, which all seem to me a bit tired.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the water provides you with a good view.

Spent 5 nights in the Park Inn in Davao during march 2013. Very comfortable, super gym, lovely pool, and a huge Mall opposite if you don't want to use the hotel's own restaurant. Reception staff were excellent, one or two of the waiters less so! The breakfast was pretty good, although they failed to stick to the pricing quoted through Booking.com.

My guess is that prices will rise, but the hotel is a sound 3.5* establishment!

Park Inn by Radisson is a new hotel in Davao City located in the SM Lanang Premiere complex. Because this complex is still relatively new, and the hotel is located behind the mall, I feel that it is still relatively isolated and away from much of the happening places in Davao City. However, if you are attending a convention at the SMX Convention center, then this is a good choice as you simply just have to cross the street to get there.

The room is good sized, with all modern amenities i.e. flat screen tv, refrigerator, working desk, sofa. The king-sized bed is very comfortable with its fluffy pillows. The bathroom has no tub but I loved the rainshower. Their towels are thick cotton and very soft including the bathrobes.

The hotel has a small pool and a gym on the second floor where the bridgeway to the mall is also located.

RBG Grill, the hotel’s only restaurant serves buffet breakfast only as of the moment. The spread could be better but they have set it up in a manner where it looks like you have many choices. The restaurant is equally very modern with clean lines and minimum decoration.

Park Inn also comes with free wi-fi in the rooms and in the lobby/restaurant.

The hotel’s big advantage is their very courteous people. Obviously, they have been very well trained. In the 3 times that I have been there, reception and restaurant staff have been consistently friendly, always smiling and even offering a cup of coffee on the house while I was waiting for some guests. A very small gesture of hospitality, but totally appreciated!

Conveniently located right behind SM Lanang, one of the city's newest and largest shopping malls and has a direct access to the mall on the 2nd level.

Rooms are modern, trendy, and clean but not of quality materials and fixtures. It will eventually take a lot of work to maintain the rooms.

Breakfast selection did not have a large variety and it was the same everyday - yes, it was pretty boring. The restaurant staff were attentive and courteous but their restaurant manager was extremely rude! The buffet breakfast was about to close so we decided to go for our last round only to find out that they had taken most of the items on the buffet. We were not informed that they already closed the buffet. When the manager saw us looking for food items, he just YELLED at us saying, "It's closed! It's closed! Just sit down and we'll give you what you want!" We were extremely offended. My partner asked to speak to that manager but he would not face us after that and had one of his supervisors speak to us. He did not apologize at all. Looks like his staff knew what they were doing, but that manager, did not. He really made a lasting impression!
