“Perhaps fire the chef.”
Reviewed August 28, 2011

The Place, Service, System:
Beautiful place. Pleasant interior design, not shabby at all. Friendly service could do with some more training. My group of 9 ordered a lot and it seems to me the kitchen couldn't handle it as orders were taking TOO LONG to arrive; rice arrived before the main courses and got cold when they did arrive. Tsk tsk.

TheFood:
Being a foodie, a cook, and a fan of Thai food. ( yes I make my own curry pastes from scratch) it abhorred me how the Tom yum goong looked and tasted. Too pale. Shrimp was overcooked. Weak taste. And I saw chili flakes ( c'mon pastes aren't hard to make). It lacked the red hued oil ( which if paste was used wouldve formed on top of the soup) that would've made the dish more attractive. And there were white specs floating in the soup. I appreciate the use of gAlangal an attempt at making the soup taste more authentic.

The fish cakes were okay, tasted a bit like fish balls (fish balls are a rounded fish cakes here in the Philippines) though but better.

Pad Thai was good. The crispy pata was as good as they come nothing extraordinary.

Wouldnt be the first restaurant I'd recommend here in Davao. But bottom line is it's not a bad restaurant. It's just not that good. Referring to DAVE MATTHEWS song it's in a "Space Between".

Posted a photo of the Tom yum too.

“The food is respectable but I think the "No. 1" slot is not really deserving.”
Reviewed August 27, 2011

The Tom Yum Goong soup wasn't authentically done. As I have eaten in many Thai restaurants both in Thailand and other places (Blue Elephant chain comes to mind), I know the soup has to have the red chili oil on top of the curry paste. It didn't look and neither did it taste Tom Yum Goong.

Tod Man (Mun) Pla wasn't good either. It was too thin and the sides were a bit burned. Because it was thin, the fish taste was barely peering out from the heavily fried batter.

The curry fish head was slightly better in quality: the curry paste must have been made from commercially-available curry powder. One would expect that a Thai restaurant would use the traditional mortar and pestle to make the curry powder.

The Thai Crispy Pata, however, did taste like a good crispy pata. I must say this was the opinion of my companions as I did not partake of what looked like a good crispy pata!

The soft shell crab with chili sauce as well as the adobong kangkong were good. Not outstanding, but good enough for a standard Thai/Filipino restaurant.

The service at the front (waittress) was okay. It was the kitchen that was slow. The food came in trickles and a bit slow. Thai food (the main course) like Filipino food, in my opinion, should always be eaten with rice. So when the fish head curry comes ahead of the bagoong rice, it is a bit upsetting.

The kitchen also did not have softdrinks. I saw the janitor/messenger go out and then come back with softdrink cans in a Robinson's Supermarket plastic bag. He should have used the service entrance.

Overall it was a disappointment especially because this restaurant was rated No. 1. It is not a bad restaurant but it is nowhere near the top in terms of food, service, and value.

Try the crispy pork...you will become a regular customer. Fresh, high quality ingredients, stylish relaxed atmosphere, excellent customer service, and very fair prices.

“Great Thai street food!”
Reviewed April 3, 2011

I'm not a Thai food connoisseur, but the meal my husband and I had in Bangkok Wok when we visited Davao was really delicious! The ingredients were very fresh, and the textures and tastes were such a treat to the palate. We will definitely go back there the next time we fly to Davao to try the soft shell crabs... oh, and the tamarind martinis were excellent too!

“Best Thai food in Davao!”
Reviewed March 31, 2011

Bangkok Wok delivers with a punch! The food is tasty, authentic, reasonably priced and definitely worth going back for. The ambiance of the restaurant makes it suitable for lunch or dinner. Much effort has been placed by its owners to bring the best of Thai food to Davao. Cheers!
