“Comfortable and Practical”
Reviewed January 31, 2011

Staff are warm and friendly- they are the jewels of this establishment!
I arrived just after lunch to check in and the front desk staff offered me a room straight away without having to wait until 2 pm and at no extra cost .
As this is a serviced condo- it offers value for money- location is excellent- stone throw away from important places.
internet is free- though only in the 32nd and 33rd floors of the establishement.
Staff are helpful, warm and welcoming- tries their very best to anticipate the needs and concerns of the guests.
Breakfast is okay.
The room i stayed is clean- housekeepers are very good- one thing- curtains seemed to have seen better days- they need to be replaced. Aircon unit is surprisingly quiet- better than other 5 star over rated hotels in makati.
Overall- deserved to be recommended to travellers who are on the look for a comfortable, safe, clean and friendly accomodation in the Ortigas area.

Rooms are ok as long as you are not looking for 5 star hotel accomodations. Malayan plaza is more of a condotel so it would be good for long staying guests. Rooms have a small kitchen complete with dinnerware.

Parking in the building is a real inconvenience. Everytime you come in, you will be asked for your name and room number which the guard I think has to verify since it takes so long before he gives us a pass. They ask you to leave your ID everytime you park. To make matters worse, the guard assigns us a slot at basement 4 since the upper level parking slots are all full. I thought we were going to reach hell. MALAYAN -- why not give out parking passes upon check in??

Malayan has to do something about the breakfast that comes with the room package. IT IS TERRIBLE!!!! If you're ok with coffee, fruit, ceral and bread than I guess you'll be fine. They served bacon, fritatas and a vegetable dish that was soooo gooey you could bring it home for glue. The bacon was so tough that it looks like it was prepared last year. The fritatas -- i didn't know fritatas look like potato chips with ham. There was a sign that you could request for eggs (scrambled or sunny side up) so I thought I would just skip everything else that was so terrible and have eggs. My eggs were served colder than a dead body. MALAYAN -- if you can't fix your breakfast, just don't serve any!!!

The location is superb aside from the fact that it's almost walking distance from everything, Shopping malls, theater and Bar.

The price is not so costly but it's not worth paying for poor service it renders. 1. Terrible breakfast. Limited choices (as in 2 choices? you called it "buffet") and you have to go out to eat at their resto (worst when it rains, you have to get wet) 2. Elevators sucks (4 service elevators but going up and down stairs will be much faster. but wont recommend taking the stairs, fire exits are way too dark and it smells horrible) 3. Front Office staff's not accommodating. Ask for something and always, "will get back to you shortly" and hello? almost checking out still no updates or follow-up. Not to mention too many front desk personnel but not a single person is friendly. Most guys (except for the concierge, most of them are really helpful) are rude and the girls? pretty faces but brainless. No sense of urgency as well, they have you wait for your room to be ready almost an hour and will have you missed you flight upon check-out. 4. WIFI available only at 32F. Stayed at 9F and you expect me to go to 32F every time i need to check my mails? and the cost for a dsl connection is way too over rated. 5. Amenities of this hotel sucks. How come they called the gym a "fitness center", no instructors and limited facilities. Swimming pool, no lifeguard and no shower rooms. 6. Worst of all, they say "no pets allowed" but it looks like a "dog pound" because the "non-hotel rooms" owners have pets of different kinds.

In due fairness the hotel room ambiance is cozy and homey but i rather stayed in a simple hotel with nothing extraordinary interiors yet unbelievably extraordinary customer services.

With the price we paid, this is definitely a "will use it again" place. The location was great. There's a 24-hour convenience store in same corner good for late night snack and anything. It's also right in front of The Podium mall, then walk thru sort of flea market "St Francis Square" then to SM Megamall. Very convenient! The staff were always helpful. Although the room service needs some improvement (called for iron and board and did not came. Next time we asked for something, we need to do a follow-up call). The room is neat and clean and this goes to the bathroom. We're able to do our cooking in our 10-day stay. Again great affordable place (as long as you don't expect 3-star and up hotel and services for the price you pay!) in great location!

First room had no internet connection so had to move rooms. Even then the internet connection was very poor so I was left without any internet connection for most of the trip. Inconsistent standard of cleanliness as culterly in new room was dirty. Hotel had also arranged car to pick me up from airport, but they did not inform me that i had to leave the hotel arrivals hall to find car, so I was left wondering around different parts of the airport for half an hour before i could find the car.
Staff at reception seemed friendly but when you actually needed to call the reception for support their service was very poor. They would say over the phone that they would send a requested item to the room, but then they would not follow up.
Elevators were also very, very slow meaning that a lot of time was waiting in the lobby and made it difficult to work out when to leave room in order to be in time for a meeting.
Breakfast buffet was also very limited and service poo
Hotel also advertises itself as having a fitness centre, but the centre is tiny and in order to reach it you have to take the elevator to the top floor and then walk up two floors of dirty stairs.

This is our second stay at the Malayan. Both times we stayed for 7 days, so we have a good basis for our comments. The advantage of this hotel is location. If you need to be in the Ortigas area, this is still a good choce - but there are some issues you have to be aware of.

At check-in the front desk staff showed extermely poor customer service. They couldn't find the reservation and then tried to put us in a room that had heavy smoke odor. When we complained, they intially told us there were no smoke-free rooms , but they would put some air fresheners in the room.

After we refused to take the room, suddenly they "found" a non-smoking room.
The room was clean and the air conditioner was quiet. That was an improvement over our last visit.

The breakfast buffet has gotten worse. On a scale of 1 - 10 (ten being best), I rate it at a 2. Congee tasted like glue, and they served chicken sausage and sweet/sour pork for breakfast. I was told that I would have to purchase bacon if I wanted any.

The wireless internet is in the lounge on the 32nd floor. It's free - but only if the maintenance staff remembers to turn on the router. The main problem is the air conditioning hardly works in the lounge. Also there was a group of Koren students who took over the lounge all day so we could not get a fan or a seat. And one evening the upstairs part of the lounge was used as a karoke party - so we had to listen to loud, bad singing.

we stayed at malayan plaza for 1 night last december 2009. we stayed in the two-bedroom suite with my sister and her boyfriend. and went back last june 2010 and stayed at the one-bedroom suite for 3 nights.

pros:

- location. location. location. malayan plaza is right in front of podium mall. its also a few minutes away from megamall, st francis square and ortigas mrt station. shang is a bit further but if you dont mind walking for about 15mins i guess its somehow near. there's pancake house and 7-11 downstairs.

- the suite is very spacious. since it's a condotel, it's big enough to receive guests as its equipped with living room, dining and kitchen facilities. kitchen amenities is complete too so you can cook and host a dinner. the suite looks stylish as well although its not the best quality.

cons:

- wifi is only free on a certain floor, it's chargeable inside the suite.
- the bathroom doesn't look very modern. at one point it even looked scary. it's clean enough but needs improvement.

during our stay last december:
- we find the reception staff extremely snobbish. they look like they're angry at us! they don't smile at all. i'm not sure if they are tired or what but it's not a reason to be snobbish at all. but the bellboy was helpful.
- the complimentary breakfast is not outstanding. most of the food at the buffet spread was dry and bland.
- we didn't like the bathroom. unlike the other parts of the suite, it looks very mediocre, not stylish at all.
- we were starving so we ordered some room service, as usual it's pricey and not worth it. unless you're really hungry and lazy to go down.

during my stay last june:
- there was a part of the shower that fell off.
- i saw a cockroach in the kitchen! *scary*

its an okay accommodation because of the location. it's one of their best pros. but they have to do something about the service and make sure the facilities in the suite works well. i hope they renovate the bathroom to a better one!
