Kabayan Hotel Pasay

We decided to stay somewhere close to the airport since it's just a 1 day stay in Manila. This hotel is a good alternative than staying in Ermita. We choose premier room and we are not disappointed. Have good wifi signal and the food is good. The room is very spacious, nice shower, a/c working well, bed is comfy and clean and please choose a room in the quiet area to make your stay really worth it. The road around this hotel is very busy 24/7. This girl receptionist ( I think her name is Jen or Jenny) is not the one to count on in choosing a room since she is not fully aware of the room placing of this hotel. Go for Mr. Freddie, he can guide you very well specially if you want a goodnight sleep in Manila.

Room Tip: Never choose a room close to the road. Go for rooms in the middle.

We were supposed to check-in this hotel before we left for Dubai, but this very rude receptionist made us look for another hotel. There were lots of people but she shouldn't be that disrespectful to inquiring customers. I'll never go to this hotel or is it a hotel, really? Poor customer service!

I have been to this hotel about 3 times already but this is the first time I am reviewing it. It is a pity that I never reviewed this hotel before or I could have given it a better rate. Having stayed in other hotels already within the area after my first 2 stays I would say that this hotel is just an alternative to other better hotels with the same rate or even lower rate. Depending on your taste, what you want to see and achieve I can say that the location could be a good or bad thing for you. It is good because it just beside the MRT Pasay station that would make exploring Metro Manila from South to North and vice versa a breeze. It is also near the airport so catching an early flight should not be a problem. It is also very near to shopping malls and plea markets. But the location could also be a negative. Outside the hotel is very chaotic; the surrounding is not a safe and ideal site for a tourist specially a foreigner and the streets around flood easily during heavy rain fall.

The service staff including the security guards that act as doormen would help you but only to a certain extent from where they can earn some extra bucks. Otherwise they would not be that attentive to your needs. Getting a taxi is like dealing with a mobster because the hotel allows some street thugs to pick-up the taxi for their guests and as an end result the drivers would charge you more than usual. I guess the hotel should assign their own staff to get the taxi for their guests and push these street thugs away. The front desk could also use some smile. Anyway it is free and a good facial exercise. We stayed at their superior room but it does not look superior to me. I can assure you that other hotels within the area can provide a better looking and cleaner room for the same price or less.

The free breakfast is also not great, with very limited choices and small serving. During my first 2 stays at the hotel I thought their rate is very good but when I discovered other hotels nearby with better amenities, rooms, service, food and rates I realized that they are not that good and there are better choices. Just the same this place can still be an alternative in case the better hotels are fully booked and you are only staying for a night to catch an early flight which is the situation for our third stay. Otherwise better stay somewhere else.

Booked directly with hotel.
Family 2 adults, 2 children age 7 & 11. Children 7 and under are free but no extras provided e.g. no breakfast, no towels etc. Booked online direct with hotel 6360PHP for 2 nights 24/9/13 (approx. $157AUD) includes plated breakfast and free Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi worked fine during our stay, we used it on 4 devices simultaneously. We used hotel airport pick up 330PHP (good for 4 people) in a van payable on check in at hotel. Hotel room also payable up front on check in (we did pay deposit at time of booking on line). We arrived at Terminal 1 after exiting the terminal you cross the driveway, walk all the way to the right to the office beside Peninsula Lounge. There you tell them you have a booking with Kabayan. On your way across the driveway people will ask you what hotel. Tell them and they will direct you.
Rooms very basic. Clean. I didn’t like the shower. It was a small room with shower head & door. Water luke warm only (that’s all you need in this weather anyway). Has bar fridge and flat screen TV. Air conditioner is the older window style, noisy but acts as white noise from the occasional dog barking and rooster in the morning.
Breakfast pretty much the same both days. Pick 2 meat/fish/soup from the menu, served with fried egg & rice and 1 slice of fruit (it was watermelon both days we were there). Unlimited juices/coffee/tea/water.
Outside hotel on EDSA is one way heading towards mall of Asia. Other side of the road heads the other way. You can use the MRT/LRT overpass above the hotel to cross the EDSA.
Metropoint Mall right next door to hotel on your right on EDSA or cross the Zamora St driveway. Has supermarket, shops, atms & fast food chains e.g. KFC, Jolli Bee, Chow King Etc. Also McDonalds & other fast food chains across the road.
BDO bank a short walk to your left outside hotel on EDSA.
We took a tricycle outside the hotel on EDSA. The security guard called him and told him where we were going and advised us it was 50PHP (for 4 of us) to Victory Bus Terminal to pre purchase our tickets to Baguio. The terminal is to your left when you exit the hotel on EDSA. It wasn’t that far so we walked back to the hotel less than 5 minute walk (you can see where the hotel is as it’s under the overpass to the MRT/LRT. Note the MRT/LRT is very busy at peak times and you may never get on a train. We had to wait for 3 trains before being able to get on one day. People are crammed in like sardines. You will have someone’s body up against yours. Traffic in Manila is bad and it is polluted. Sometimes you have no choice but to take your chances with the MRT/LRT as you could be stuck in traffic if in a Jeepney or Taxi. Note the MRT/LRT does not travel very fast but is probably still faster than traffic on the roads.
You can buy tropical fruits from vendors outside hotel in Zamora St. Cheaper than at the supermarket e.g. Rambutan 10 or 20 php per half kilo. Supermarket 53php per kg.
Cheapest way to mall of Asia is by Jeepney 8PHP per person, children free. Jeepneys are to you left of the hotel on EDSA. Hand your peso to the driver or other passengers to pass on to driver. He will give change if you don’t have exact. Mall of Asia is not cheap, same or more expensive than in Australia.
Recommended shopping in Manila is Greenhills, St Francis Mall and Divisoria. Shopping was cheap here, stall like shops where you need to bargain. Other malls have proper shops with fixed prices.
Bring your phone and buy a sim card & credits (called ‘loads’). Sim Card 40php from Globe, they said loads start at 100php. Sim card includes free texts only. If you need data its 200ph for 5 days unlimited. There’s also 1 day data etc.
Staff are helpful when you ask.
Hotel called us a taxi (it was white) he charged us a set fee of 200PHP, we probably should have insisted on using the meter. Apparently it is illegal for taxis to insist on a fixed fare and refuse to turn on the meter. You can take their details and report them to the police. Airport is about 10 minutes from hotel.
On our return from Boracay, we took a yellow taxi (airport meter taxi). The taxi rank is outside the airport terminal. There can be a queue at times. The taxi driver wanted a fixed fare we said no so he had to turn the meter on. The meter starts at 70php and from what I refall goes up by 4php per 300 metres or if stuck in traffic. There’s a sign at the taxi rank telling you about the price. It cost us about 170php (i think) back to the Kabayan. So much cheaper than hotel pick up.
Would stay again as near airport if you are using Manila as a jetting off point. Based on my research this is the best you can get in Pasay in this price range for its location.

For people arriving at the airports and need a transit hotel that won’t bust their wallet, this definitely and perfectly fit the bill. Located along the main EDSA highway right beside the Metro / LRT stations in Pasay Rotonda. Getting to/from the airport is easy with so many taxis stopping in front of the hotel, fare costs about PHP100 – 200 depending on your bargaining skills with the drivers.

As the name suggests (Kabayan - fellow countrymen), it’s geared towards providing stop-over accommodatins for “Balikbayans”, overseas workers having their vacations, and foreign tourists-friendly too.

They have rooms of several types of varying comfort levels and budget range. They have the usual family rooms, double or twin rooms, single, a pads with a loft bed, a dorm-type rooms with several double-deck beds each beds surrounded by curtains for privacy, and perhaps the newest and my preferred type – the capsule which are popular in Japan and several European hotels. I stayed in one and I find it comfortable.

The capsule is laid in two levels, the upper one have a small ladder, each capsule have a curtain that you can shut down for your privacy, so you get a good night sleep inside your very own cubicle. Inside the cubicle is a mattress, an electrical socket, lighting and an exhaust fan. The big room has 12 capsules, 6 on each sides with the main door in the middle accessible by an electronic key card so only occupants can get in. There’s a shoe rack cum bench right beside the door, each occupant has his/her own big locket with keys, 2 big bathroom with nice American toilet bowl and a rain shower separated by a curtain. The room is airconditioned too and very clean with two huge mirrors on each opposite end walls.

Lobby is huge where you can hangout and where wifi has strong reception. A big restaurant and function rooms. Food at the restaurant are very affordable, dinner meals cost less than 4US$.

Staff are friendly and too many of them including security personnel at each entrances. Elevators are available. It’s a big hotel that when you’re inside, you get this feel that it has a world of its own, it’s like you’re in a miniature city within a city, can’t find the exact description but that’s my best, tell me if you can find one.

It’s a pretty busy hotel, too many guests enjoying their stay, at the lobby or walking around.

I paid PHP750 (about US$17) breakfast included for the dorm-type capsule room.

Great value, highly recommended.

Room Tip: Capsule it if you're in a budget.
