“You'll be looking for a reason NOT to stay here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2010

A nice hotel in a relatively quiet neighborhood of Makati City - the business area of Manila. Good service; spacious rooms; comfortable. They try to anticipate your needs and wishes. A [tiny] pool, a gym, wifi in the lobby.

Two things that seem to marr the experience: breakfast that is neither tasty nor nutritious, and a very patchy Internet connection in the room. If the latter is important (it was for me!), youmight want to visit the lobby - or choose to stay in another hotel (but the problem might be quite universal and not hotel-dependent).

The living room really impressed me when I first opened the door to the suite. It's huge and well ventilated. I like the style of the curtains too. You also have a small fridge and a cooking space with stove, microwave, and all the cooking stuff and utensils. I've not really used much of this as food at the restaurant is really inexpensive. They also provide 2 bottles of water for free on a daily basis as tap water is not drinkable. There's a TV (another one in the bedroom) with tons of local and international channels (Korean, Japanese, Chinese...) to flip, but I watch CNN, BBC and Bloomberg the most.

The bathroom has a bathtub and a closed shower space. It's pretty spacious and very well kept in order.

The bedroom is pretty big too and has a wardrobe with an iron and ironing board. There's even a little safe to keep your valuables in and a scale to check your weight. They could have provided more hangars though. What I don't like is the noise, both from the street and from the AC. When you're jet-lagged, you tend to wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep because the noise from the street is ongoing throughout day and night. The AC is too noisy to be kept on, so I just turn it off before going to bed.

The staff is friendly and helpful. I give them a tip on a daily basis, though you don't have to, and they changed my non-working alarm radio clock and kept my room clean and tidy. The front desk also gave me great sightseeing advice. What I like most during my stay is the complimentary breakfast. You not only have a buffet (a little heavy by my standard) that changes in variety from day to day, you can also order an omelet your own style for free. Breakfast is 7 to 10:00am.

There's a small market in a nearby park (one block away) every Saturday from 7:00am to 2:00pm with local produce and delicacies. It's much fun to have a taste of local food as well as their daily life. The hotel is also within walking distance from the Triangle Park, a popular destination for an evening stroll or exercises. I've even walked to the Greenbelt markets, only 15 minutes if you can figure out the shortest distance.

One thing you do need to be reminded again is that the elevator IS painfully slow, so do give it 3-5 minutes during the morning rush hour. And the pool, forget about it unless you have kids want to get some fun. The gym seems to be functioning properly as I saw people working out on the treadmill and other equipment.

Generally a good serviced apartment, but has a bunch of annoying problems which made me leave for another hotel. On the positive, good rooms. Fittings are a little old but decent. Some good restaurants close (pokedin amongst the office buildings).

The problems:

- Internet just doesn't work. Staff kept telling me they would fix it but didn't.
- Sauna not working.
- Pool was closed on 4 occasions I tried to go there
- Gym has no AC
- Elevators are the slowest in Makati - no service elevator either. Really annoying when you're moving between floors. Also they shut one down at night, which for some reason is when a lot of guests are moving up and down....
- Breakfast is unappealing
- Noisy AC
- Staff were just useless when it comes to dealing with problems - but bear in mind this is not a full service hotel.

Somerset, though a serviced apt was nothing less than a 5 star experience. The in house service is fantastic. Facilities like Jacuzzi inside the rooms make the stay special. The breakfast provided is awesome and one should never miss. Great swimming pool just adds to the awesome experience. Its right in the heart of the city which makes it accessible as well. the best place to stay in Makati city :)

I made 2 room reservations through the internet . Unfortunately there has been a change of plan, I tried to call the hotel hotline and their reception several times to move my date by they didn't accomodate my request. They said my booking is non amendable and non-refundable. I was able to speak to a certain Melissa Payumo the rudest Guest Relations Manager i have encountered.
