MNL Boutique Hostel
Ranked #8 of 62 Specialty Lodging in Makati
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I initially plan to stay for one week @ MNL Boutique Hostel but ended up extending until the end of the duration of my 2 week trip to Manila due to it’s excellent, attentive & friendly staff, with neat, tidy rooms & shared facilities consistently with the housekeeping service.
A great location right next to A-Venue Mall & as well as an open market at night time where so you can simply sit & relax, choose to have dinner & try the different local exquisite cuisine on offer at a fraction of a price whilst enjoying listening to different bands playing every night and get the real feeling of mixing with the locals.
MNL boutique hostel is no exception in comparison to other good hotels with regards to security being taken seriously although the area is safe. I often, went out till the early hours of the morning & walked back to the hostel with no hassle.
Walking a bit further along Makati Avenue brings you to the huge upmarket Ayala Greenbelt 5 & Glorietta shopping malls & restaurants & bars though you will have to take the underpass to get across the road.
The resident managers Celina, Maica & Gonz were exceptionally efficient and helpful. The upkeep of the MNL Boutique Hostel property and the efficiency and friendliness of all the staff is testimony to their good management & will no doubt be the one of the choices of accommodation for me the next time I visit Manila. Highly recommended for free-spirited like-minded travellers looking for alternative & affordable accommodation.

What's distinctive from any other hostels are just PEOPLE. I have been visiting many countries and most impressions of hostels are just: rooms shared with unknown people. There are not much interesting conversations.

But MNL Hostel is definitely a life-changing experience. It is not big, but perfectly in a good size for people to chat and know each other. Every person I know here is great. Many youth from Europe and North America come here to explore Asia and lots of stories to hear. The day before i left, I still remembered we played guitar till 2am.... it's crazy. singing, sharing stories, and everything. It's a place you always hope to stay, find new interesting people every day... summarize in one word: you find 'HOME' here.

Room Tip: Beds will shake when people move and turn their body. Quite noisy actually. Suggestion: better beds!

If there's one thing I love about this hostel, it is their BYOB night. A night of getting to know strangers that could turn out to be great friends over a bottle of beer.

The beds were very comfy and though it has common shower and comfort rooms it is somewhat clean.

Wifi is only available at the common area and it isn't that strong.

Stay at MNL is an enjoyable experience, although the place is small but they have a great staff and a very quick response if we need something. Unfortunately the wifi network is available only in public spaces it would probably be good if wifi is available in the rooms as well. Its location is also very easily found almost all taxis that we were riding knowing its location and fares from the airport are much lower than the ones mentioned in the website approximately 200php or less. but the third bathroom water channels seemed to be problematic so that water can't flow smoothly so that the shower becomes uncomfortable. I would stay here again if returned to manila.

This is definitely a cute backpackers. But there were a couple of things I didn't like.

1. The double room that we booked had recently been painted and the fumes were dizzying.
2. I could hear the guy in the next room rolling over. The walls were paper thin.
4. The size. Downstairs the reception area and other communal areas were really narrow with low ceilings, making it all a bit claustrophobic.

Perhaps the rooms upstairs were better?

However there were some great things about this hostel... Location! Some great food and shopping locations within walking distance. The staff were really helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Also the bathrooms were really good. Always available and clean. The bed was comfortable and the linen clean and of good quality. I always love finding what I like to call quality 'flashpackers'. And this is definitely one of them. From what I hear, this is a rare find in a place like Makati.

Don't judge the book by its cover! This is so true with MNL Boutique Hostel. Once you stay, you definitely love it. I had so much fun in this hostel by going around and discovering every corner of it.
You will be amazed how things are organized and colored in this hostel. And don't miss the comfort room (restroom), you can discover something interesting in there (i did and took some photos).
I definitely will stay in this hostel again when I am back to Manila. Besides, the reasonable price and convenient location is another plus.

Absolutely fantastic hostel (and we've stayed in many many). Great vibe. Interesting travellers. Beautiful new bedding, towels & comfy beds. Showers & toilets very clean - and there's a lot of them. The owners were very helpful when we needed help with a few little admin things. Thanks to the team there. Sorry guys for taking so long to write our review... Michelle & Alseny

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
MNL Boutique Hostel is a project of backpackers and well traveled friends that aims to showcase Filipino culture and hospitality in a clean, wholesome and welcoming environment. At MNL, we make sure that when you visit, it's like coming home to an old friend or reconnecting with a family member. We like sharing our stories and we'd also love to hear yours too -- perhaps over a cold bottle of San Miguel Beer.We believe that there is more to Manila than just a jump off point to the islands, that's why we make it a point to give our guests a memorable experience at the hostel. We added a "boutique" to our name because we believe that traveling on a budget does not mean that you have to let go of your comforts. At the same time, art pieces at the hostel depict a story that is truly Filipino -- from pop icons and national heroes to pieces of furniture to hand woven blankets by indigenous tribes.Lastly, we believe that there is nothing more comforting for a traveler in a foreign land than to meet a fellow traveler or to link with a local with the same interests. More than just a place to sleep, this camaraderie is what we build at MNL. ... more   less
