“Nice City Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

Just stayed there shortly on our honeymoon trip, but it is very classy in nice. Well protected entrance to aware of the crazy city of Manila.

Amazing HaloHalo! Very kind to deliver strawberrys and wine to the room!

First the good points, the hotel is well located in the middle of town, a short walk to the Greenbelt and Glorietta malls. The spotless rooms are resonably spacious and all the amenities are there (pool, gym spa etc). Whilst the hotel bears the Peninsula name, it was pretty disappointing. Objectively its a comfortable hotel, but dont expect the same standards as you would at other Penns. We booked and confirmed a room with twin beds and ended up with a king sized bed, but thankfully they found another room.

The hotel is dated, the furnishing are dated (but still nice and ageing gracefully), even the bath towels have seen better days and some were quite worn (no big deal but not what you would expect). The air con was pretty loud and the temperature controls were a little dodgy. The bathroom was very spacious but you can tell by the quality of the materials that cost cutting was a prime concern. There is free wifi which was great. Tried a couple of the massages at the Spa, no complaints there. Prices were ludicrously high compared to outside the hotel but reasonable compared to what you would expect to pay at a 5 star hotel. Breakfast in the restaurant is far better than in the lobby, although the lobby offers an open aired space, the food wasnt as fresh or varied as the full buffet. The quality of the spread and the taste was pretty average. Not the best breakfast out there.

The general service level however, was terrible, and we rarely complain. Called for an ironing board on two occasions and both times it took almost 30 minutes to arrive. Calls for service even went unanswered a few times, it just rang out. Cant remember the last time it happened at a 5 star establishment. For such a hot and humid city, they are ridiculously stingy with the shower gel. Yes you can call for more, but be prepared to wait 15-20 mins till it arrives.

The lobby is supposed to be a local hotspot for A listers in Manila, a place to see and be seen. Sadly theres not much to see, its a pretty average cafe, and I really dont see why anyone would bother to be seen here. Had a snack there around midnight on a weekday (thinking it would be faster than room service), the place wasnt even half full. The food however took over an hour to arrive. Not only was it average, we asked the waiters twice to check on the food cause we wanted to cancel it as we were sick of waiting but they simply ignored us. Finally got to speak to the manager and all he could do was apologise without any service recovery attempt. To be fair the F&B manager did contact us a couple of days later on our last night there and offered a comp meal, but after the debacle of the other night we didnt want to wait hours for substandard food but kudos for the recovery. Why locals flock to eat there is beyond comprehension - perhaps because it is one of only two places that are open 24 hours in Manila. Housekeeping and everyone else you meet around the hotel are friendly. The concierge was very friendly and effiicient, although tours booked through the hotel incur a 5% surcharge if charged to the room or 3% for using a CC, which is bizarre, and the ATMs limit you to 250 usd a day.

Took the Merc to the airport and that was a faultless albeit pricey experience for the 20 min ride, but at least they have wifi in the car. In summary, the hotel was clean and comfortable, and apart from the service hiccups it has what you would expect from a generic 5 star establishment. However a Peninsula it is not. You expect the highest levels of service and luxury from a Penn, and it was lacking in most respects on this occasion. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the hotel, but given the reviews here you would think it was paradise. To be fair, the price was very resonable compared to other Penns, so you get what you pay for. Youd be better off spending less at a different hotel for a similar product. Saw members of our tour group get dropped off at the new Fairmont and that looked like an appealing choice.

We had a late night arrival (10pm) into Manilla & then were heading out the following afternoon to Iloilo so wanted a nice place to be pampered for a night. The Pen met the test! I found a fairly reasonable discounted room on Agoda - so I think got stuck on a lower level (3rd floor) facing the road. My wife heard some street noise, but I was fine....

Service & room were superb, made use of the gym & pool the following morning - best service I had ever experienced - maybe should stay 5-star more often! Had the bfast included, main buffet in the restaurant looked scrumptious, but had a 30 minute wait, so we opted for the mini-buffet in the grand lobby lounge which was plenty good! Made the coffee to order, which took a little time, but was delicioso.

Been a PEN card member for two years now. Also a member of the gym. Along with four other friends we always renew the pen card membership, book rooms for weekend stay-cations instead of driving out of Makati. Food in Escolta and the lobby is always consistent. Service at the lobby could be better, during busy nights they are not in the game. On call housekeeping staff and room service is excellent! Front office staff and service is better in 2013 (so far) than 2012-2011. Marie Mangalili is excellent!!!!

even though this hotel has been around for years, the surroundings, the rooms, lobby have been well maintained. the breakfast buffet at the escolta was excelent, the staff were all pleasant and polite, from the food server to the managers. the salon de ning had a good band, the lobby was always entertaining (even saw madam imelda having midnight chow). i just love everything about this classy place. i know we will be back here next year cause i missed the halo-halo.

Manila Pen has the reputation of a 5 star hotel located in the heart of Makati. Shout out to Cheska Bernache who definitely made sure that our stay at Manila Pen was a lovely experience. We had trouble with the shuttle service from the mall and Cheska made sure that our concern was heard by upper management and was definitely taken care off.

The team of Manila Pen from concierge to front desk was outstanding. Everyone was very hospitable. To tally the pros of Manila Pen:

Complimentary shuttle service to surrounding shopping areas.
Great variety of breakfast/ brunch buffet even served with customized juice recipes to your liking.
Clean Rooms, Beautiful grand lobby and fitness center w/ outdoor pool and gym.
Airport car service for $50

Manila Pen is worth it for its competitive pricing. The ambiance and excellent clientele care will make up for it. Can't wait for my next stay!

It is a great hotel with Peninsula standard in Makati areas. We stayed for the conference which was conducted in the hotel last week.

We booked two rooms, for me and my colleague, and we got a good rate. Half price for the second room.

The flight Jakarta~Manila was a pretty bad mid night flight even though with business class, but the swift airport picked up by Peninsula was remedied the pain.

We arrived at 6 am, surprisingly, we got early checked in for our rooms. We really appreciate for the early check in.

We took the breakfast, it was a full of choice breakfast. The lobby was busy, seem it is the one of place to have a meeting in Makati areas where by, most of guess having meeting in the lobby cafe, or take a high tea there. It was superb experience, with beautiful ambient and live music in the lobby.

Room was ok, not as daunted as reported by several guess. Not new, but decent, with good amenities. I tried the gym, it was full but it was a perfect gym, but not as big as Grand/Park Hyatt standard. I wish I had more time to use it.

The hotel was close by to several malls. It was 10 minute walk to Glorietta Mall and Greenbelt malls. And also close to Philippine Stock Exchange Bld at Ayala Avenue. There was a shuttle to this mall, but walking not too bad.

Overall experience was perfect.

Room Tip: The higher room the better Makati's view
