Makati Shangri-La worth the visit

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 11, 2019via mobile
Great hotel wonderful trip. Beautiful surroundings. Safe, lovely staff. The spa was terrific. Well Done! Rooms are nicely appointed. Wish they had both 220 and 110 outlets haha. Food is diverse and the presentation great. Many options and types of restaurants. Tea and happy hour brought out the best with music, service etc

Stayed 3 nights for a meeting which was also held in the hotel itself. Hotel was huge and luxurious however lacks the modern touch. Rooms were huge and clean but very dated décor.

Staffs were polite and very helpful and I feel very safe with hotel's security. Check-in was fuss free and swift.

What I really love about this hotel is the abundance of Halal food available for in-room dining. While Halal food is scarce in Manila (especially for first timers), this is definitely a huge bonus. My aglio olio was delicious too!

Location is superb! Love it that it is so near many shopping malls- both luxury and midrange. Makes it easier for business travelers to sneak out for a quick shopping anytime.

However, the airport pickup during arrival was a bit of a letdown. We ordered for 2 cars and despite knowing our flight arrivals details, we had to wait for a good 10mins or so for the cars to arrive. I understand that there were possibly many guests arriving at the same time but I personally feel we should not have waited that long for - definitely not with Shangri-La.

I used to stay at this hotel twice a year for more than 10 years and it was ok. Now it is not. Rooms are very old and are not very clean and furniture is all very worn. Also one Duty Manager, Mr Nardi Borondia was very rude and unhelpful when I asked to change my reservation. On check in the staff told me some rooms had been renovated. They had not. Nothing has been done to the rooms in more than 20 years. I moved to the Fairmont during my stay. A good hotel and without the rudeness and unhelpfulness of the staff at the Makati Shangri-La. And to add insult to injury, after they changed my reservation and said I wouldn't be charged and then changed this by a letter sent to my room! They asked me to send an email, but I couldn't as the hotel firewall blocked me from sending emails and they had no one to deal with this at the weekend - so I couldn't even email the hotel! Altogether a very unpleasant stay. My email works perfectly now at the Fairmont. So in my opinion, best to avoid the Makati Shangri La.

Dear Mr. Ashdown,

Thank you for providing us feedback on your experiences.

I have written to you personally via email on any miscommunication that may have occurred during your stay.

As I mentioned in my email reply, our colleague advised upon check in, that we have renovated the hotel in a number of areas including pool, gym and Sage Restaurant/Bar and are currently planning our guest room renovation as well. Concerning the information on changing your reservation, this was correct as your booking was made through a 3rd party Travel Agent and you would normally be the one who would need to action any changes and you may incur fee’s for any changes, this is their normal business practice. However our Hotel colleague Mr. Borondia, personally contacted the travel agency himself and was able to make the changes for you, he also advised you by a letter to your room and you were only charged for 1 night with us. Concerning the internet, there was indeed an issue with the connection with your computer as I understand at 11pm on the weekend, no we did not have an IT assistant available then, but did offer assistance the very next morning, which was declined. Again, we do apologise for any miscommunication on our part and our team will take this as a lesson for improvement in the future as well.

Thank you and kind regards,

Greg Findlay

First, we made our reservations through Expedia. But manipulating an extra room, late arrivals, Airport/hotel pick up, all had to be done by phone. The phone staff was very accommodating and helpful. Having just finished 15 hours of travel (HNL/ICN/MNL) we were ready to hit the sack. We were dropped off by the hotel shuttle and met at the door by a front desk staff with an iPad. She arranged for our luggage to be taken to the room and she escorted us directly to the room, completing all the check in process there.
They have an excellent spa/gym facility with machines, free weights, free coffee and water. They have separate locker rooms for men and women which include a sauna, steam room, heated jacuzzi, and cold tub.
They have a children’s pool and an adult pool, which includes on demand swimming lessons for children ( for a fee).
The rooms were well equipped with TV (over 70 channels), free WiFi throughout the hotel, and big spacious bathrooms with separate shower.
Even though the room was prepaid, they require a P5000 per day refundable deposit for incidentals.
The staff was very friendly and attentive.we had the breakfast buffet (for 12) and once again very accommodating and lots of various Asian and American dishes .
The hotel is less than 6 minutes from eating and shopping on a grand scale which was very convenient.
The only downside was the safety deposit room. Wallpaper peeling and lots of the boxes were broken.
Overall a great visit.

Good room, good service by Hanna at the front desk. The lobby lounge is a disappointment on two items.

1. The wait staff need training really bad. They are polite but struggle on service. They do not look up and seem to buzz around doing what seem to be busy work. When you look down and do not ask the Customer how everything is or if your Customers need anything, this becomes a real problem. We had our dirty dishes sit on our table for over 1 hour. Is this really 5 star? The ladies wearing black ( I suppose they are supervisors) were texting on their phones. Come on now train your staff better. This is not 5 star.

2. The orchestra was relegated or banished to the second level. The impressive nature of the orchestra was in the lobby - visible when you walk in and visible when you sit in the lobby lounge. By moving them to the second floor, you might as well pipe in music from a CD - why even bother doing live music. This seem like amateur hour from the Management team - very disappointing. A few years ago, they had the live music parade into the lobby and was impressive. Today, the orchestra is relegated in the second floor - you could put them in the closet and no one would really know. Amateur hour guys - not impressed.

Room tip: I would stay at the fairmont next time.

I really love the smell in the lobby! It is very luxurious! We had a short but great stay. One good thing about this hotel are the staffs who are very kind and hospitable. The hotel is also surrounded by a couple of malls and various restaurants.
