“Good Hotel but Not Worth the Premium”
Reviewed January 21, 2010

I stayed here after staying at the Peninsula. The Shangri-La is definitely the best located hotel in Makati and most modern as well. But it's not really worth the $50-$75 premium that they hold over the Peninsula. It's not *that* great.

Pros: Good location, great gym, nice pool area, nice breakfast buffet. Good service.

Cons: Rooms are starting to show some wear and tear. There are chip marks and the desk drawers in my room would not pull out correctly. Also, it is not that much nicer than The Peninsula which is across the street. Also, the spa is ridiculously overpriced, even for a hotel spa.

Looking forward to the new Raffles hotel when it opens in Makati.

I am travelling a lot, but this is my absolute favorite business hotel globally. The staff is peerless, as is the breakfast buffet. The fitness club - a poor stepchild in many hotels - is huge with two glass fronts into the garden and city. Rooms are great.

Searching long and hard, the only gripe I have is that they still serve shark fin products in the Chinese place.

Shangri-La is now putting up another hotel in the Fort in manila - the Shangri-La Makati will be a hard act to follow.

Strongly recommended for all ages, single, couple or family.

As ever The Shangri La delivers the 'total luxury' experience at it's hotel in Makati, Manila. As soon as you enter The Shang you are transported into a beautiful world of peerless luxury. Everything is perfect, tasteful and serene in The Shangri La.
Staff service levels are absolutely exemplary, everyone is more than willing to see to your every need. At check in I was offered an upgrade to a Junior Suite in The Horizon Club for US$50, an offer I readily accepted.
The room was beautifully appointed, the attention to detail is dazzling: from the air-hinged wardrobe doors, the very expensive bathroom goodies to the very well equipped Business desk.
Breakfast in The Horizon Lounge was plentiful, varied and the quality of food was exceptional. Service was fast, friendly and very efficient.
My praise for Shangri-La Hotels is endless, other luxury chain would do very well to learn from their properties.

I stayed at the Makati Shangri-La for reasons of business, not pleasure; but it was one of the most pleasurable stays I have had, in more years of traipsing around the world on business than I like to recall. The location, in the still-new, upmarket Makati area, is excellent, for starters; the welcome at every stage (even from the friendly-seeming, slobbering explosive-sniffer dogs! And their courteous handlers) is one of the warmest I have known. The Philippines is known for the warmth of its tourism industry, and I have to say that within ten minutes of arriving at the Shangri-La I understood why.

Both food and service at all the restaurants I tried were excellent. The maitre at the breakfast room, despite catering to a few hundred people every day, was greeting me by name by about the third day. A colleague who went to Conway's, the bar, was so impressed with the level of customer service that he asked the manager if they would participate in a customer service training program for our own employer.

A touch I especially enjoyed - the bookmarks, left after the evening turn-down service, each with an excerpt from James Hilton's "Lost Horizon".

Would love to go back - and am looking forward to doing so one day with family.

We spent 3 weeks here and were extremely satisfied with our stay. The rooms were large and the beds were wonderful. We were working nights, so were happy to have the darkout shades to keep out the light during the day. The employees here are the friendliest we have ever encountered and it is quite a change to hear the constant "ma'am" and "sir" from most US hotels. Circles, one of the restaurants in the hotel, has an amazing breakfast buffet with anything ranging from sushi to omelets made to order, and well worth the money. It's definitely worth it to have your laundry done as it is returned folded in a basked with tissue paper and fresh flowers. Overall one of the best hotel stays we have had to date world-wide.

Due to the reviews in Tripadvisor I had quite some expectations of the Shangri-La.

When I arrived I found a lobby which is cold and doesn't offer seating where you would wait for a pick-up. Instead you have to stand and wait (which can take a while when your pick-up is a Philippino).

I made a reservation at the Horizon floor to get all the benefits. When I entered the floor I've been a bit shocked about the design/color of the carpet and the cheap light-wood. It more reminded me of a Holiday Inn rather than a 5 star hotel. Used tableware was moved around on cheap plastic trolleys (even McDonals use better once).

The Horizon Club is really nothing special, neither the breakfast nor the evening goodies. Everything very standard. The room is okay, standard 3 - 4 stars, nothing innovative - just boring old-style.

If this is really the number 1 in Makati then: poor Manila!

The Shangri-La in Makati is an extroadinary hotel. It is absolutely beautiful and you will not find better service anywhere. The staff is there to take care of you and make your stay an unforgettable experience. The hotel has five 5 star restaurants with a health club, spa, swimming pool and tennis courts. It is located in the heart of the business district and is directly across the street from some wonderful malls which include stores like Gucci, Prada, Guess, Louis Vuitton and more. I highly recommend this hotel if you travel to Manila.
