“Good Place to stay in Calapan”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

This was our first time staying at a hotel in Calapan. We were a little worried due to the reviews we saw. This hotel (one of the only ones in Calapan) while being a little older, has been kept up, and in clean & decent condition. Staff was very pleasant & helpful. Room was clean and large for PI hotels. The food was acceptable, and good selections, even for an American. The internet was very slow, but that seems to be normal for the Philippines. U.S. travelers are just used to faster internet speeds. We stayed for 5 nights in October 2013, so had a chance to use the local surrounding shops. The huge new shopping all across the street, coffee shop across the driveway, were all good and very friendly. I will be staying here again, on future trips to Mindoro.

Our room was huge and reasonably clean for an older hotel. The aircon was very effective. Plenty of hot water and a view of the pool. Breakfast was included and was very limited, but just fine for us. Very nice, and good service. Dinner menu is HUGE and cheap. Would be perfect if it had a fridge. VERY reasonably priced. Wifi does surge a lot, but it's free and wasn't a problem for us at all.

Room Tip: I couldn't find how to rate the above, but service is great, value is great, sleep quality is fi...

Second time staying at Filipinania .I needed accommodation with reliable internet and should have learnt my lesson from the first stay in 2012. This hotel prides itself on being a first class business hotel in Calapan, it is far from it. If you need business facilities during your stay I would suggest that you look elsewhere. The internet service is a complete shambles. Some of the staff were professional enough in their duties, others not so, though to be fair there was some training going on of graduates from Hotel Management courses, however it is up to hotel management to make sure that they conduct themselves with proper decorum. Reception staff were giggling and laughing while guests were entering and departing the lobby. The swimming pool had a lot of algae growing on the sides of the pool. It was a very disappointing stay compared to my first visit there last year and I won’t be staying there again.

Room Tip: Ask for room on poolside, the rooms on the other side can be extremely hot.

This is supposed to be the best or among the best in Calapan City but do not expect so much. I would try to be objective but here are the things that the owners/managers should look into:

1. The room that we had used has no hot water. We had called the attention of the staff the next day (tried to endured a cold bath) but nothing was done--the water in the bath was still icy cold even if we had turned the faucet on ('switched' to the "hot" side) for 10-15 minutes. We did not bother to ask the staff again as it was in the middle of the night already. It seemed we had talked to a blank wall.

2. The aircon was dripping. When we woke up, the floor near the aircon was already wet. Since s portion of our blanket fell on the floor, it became soaked too. A pillow that fell down also got wet.

3. They do not automatically leave spare toilet paper even if the remaining tissue is too thin already. It is expected from hotels that a spare roll is automatically left after one day of stay so that guests will not suddenly run out of tissue paper in the middle of the night. However, in this hotel, I think they expect you to wait to finish the whole roll before volunteering to leave another roll (even if it was your 2nd day of stay already and they did the housekeeping rounds already).

4. The room we booked into was "just" a standard room, with promo rate of PhP 1,750. We don't know if this is the reason for the "shabby" treatment and the bad condition of the plumbing and aircon. However, we wonder whether this is their way of treating people based on their room type? (The mentality that "you get what you pay for"? Perhaps they "give away" rooms at promo rates but with the note that guests should not complain and just suffer in silence? We don't know.)

One nice thing about the hotel is the food. Quality is not among the best but we were satisfied. The location is ideal, too, as it is near a mall.

We stayed 4 days as part of a group visiting Calapan and liked the place. Our room was humungously spacious, clean, and comfortable. It had a view of the pool area, and the dining area on the second floor. The toilet was plugged after first use, but one phone call brought the handyman around, who fixed the problem immediately. Shower had hot running water. You have to put up the sign to fix your room on the door knob, or else they will leave it alone for your privacy. Breakfasts were basic, and you had to order them the night before. Service was good with a smile, and the staff was eager to please. Wifi was good only in the main lobby. Close to Auntie Lola, the haute cuisine place in Calapan, according to a fellow I met. The mall was just across the street from the hotel for a little window shopping or fast food.

Room Tip: Any room facing the pool would be good.

Room rate for a Deluxe room was P2700 which included complimentary pick-up and drop off at Calapan Pier and breakfast for two. The breakfast wasn't anything special, staff were quite friendly and check-in and out was quick enough. I found the room to be of very good size after being in several hotels in Manila in the previous few weeks. Rooms are starting to look a little tired, but they were certainly comfortable enough. Good position on the main road into the city and across the road from the new Robinson's Mall. I would certainly stay there again if I was in Calapan.

Room Tip: Nice view of the pool if you are on the southern side.

The rooms are average in size, with two big beds.
Thank God for good airconditioning, made sleep relaxing.
Bathroom has a bath tub, and surprisingly the bath soap smells really good. Toothbrush/toothpaste kit is also provided aside from the usual shampoo and soap.
The rate of P2700/night in inclusive of transfers from Calapan pier and breakfast for 2pax.
If you don't feel like eating your meals inside the hotel, there's a quaint restaurant, walking distance from the hotel, called Auntie Lola's (turn left when you reach the road from the hotel compound). Must try are their baby back ribs and fruit shakes.
There's also a mall in front of the hotel compound, Neo Calapan Mall with 2 cinemas, a supermarket (Robinson's), 2 drugstores (Mercury and Watsons) and restaurants.
* Landbank bank with ATM is available within the hotel compound
* Pasalubong - available at the ferry terminal, must try are the suman and banana chips
* Calapan City has Max's, McDonalds, Jollibee and Chowking
