“Faulty Towers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2012 via mobile

Checking into this place was like walking onto the set of Faulty Towers. The owner, Alfredo, seemed to have had a little too much coca tea. We arrived at 5am from Cusco and had emailed them previously asking if it would be possible for us to book a 3 island boat trip and overnight stay through them, and store our luggage there whilst we did this, before returning there for one night. Alfredo told us there were 2 options for the homestay, to stay on either Amantani which was very touristy or Taquile which would be more 'local', despite the guide books telling us the opposite. We opted for the Taquile, we were told we would be met by an English speaking guide and shown around the island. 1st stop was Uros, totally touristy but you have to tick the box. The guide on the boat said we were now going to Taquile, we asked when we would go to Amantani as we had booked and paid for a 3 island tour, and we were told the only way you can do 3 islands is if you stay on Amantani.
At Taqulie we were met by our host who spoke NO English whatsoever, so my friend had to translate everything for the whole 2 days to those of us in the group that didn't have good enough Spanish. At the famy house we did not eat with the family or see how they live, it was more like a hotel attached to their house we stayed in. We got to see a lot of the island, and we didn't see any other tourists at all, however on speaking to people who stayed on Amantani they seemed to have a lot more of an 'authentic' experience.
When we checked into the hostel the lady did not ask us for our passports or anything, but offered to book our bus tickets for the morning which we paid her for. Our room was ok, clean with hot water and good wifi. In the morning when we got up for breakfast Alfredo kept telling people we had to sit 4 to a table as there were 21 people coming to breakfast, despite he fact that there were only 7 of us there at the time and no one else seemed to be getting up 6am.
Overall, ok hostel in a pretty boring town, but book your own island tour at the docks to ensure you get what you pay for.

The concept of the hostel was pretty nice, different appartments with their own kitchen and living room. The location was pretty good in terms of being able to walk to the bus station, the harbour and town (the alleyway itself is a bit weird). Beds were comfortable.
Appart from that everything else was weird. The owners were really strange, and insulted me for telling people in my room that there would be a lockdown in Bolivia on the 21st, WHICH THERE WAS by the way.
The smell coming from the sewage stank the place up, and the hostel was overall not very clean and looked very old.
I guess it would be great without the weird pressure from the owners (they will try to sell you expensive tours and other stuff, I sugges you don't do it) and a little makeover. I gave them my laundry and it came back I guess clean but not even smelling of soap...
Overall, weird vibes

This hostel has such weird owners. The woman is really nice to you in the beginning. But she only is like that in the beginning, we saw here be so nice for others new guesst and she did not even look at us anymore. Also when we went exploring on the roof and something that looked like a common area the guy was so weird and told us we weren´t really allowed to be there because it was for the more expensive beds. We could sit there but only if we were quit. That was weird because there was really no one there! Also the hostel was really cold, I really don´t know why. The beds are fine and also the location is fine. But all the above is so weird that we didn´t liked our stay there!

This make of it a really nice place to sleep. The hostal is well located and the rooms are very clean, staff is helpful and can book buses and activities for you. The room are clean but bathroom is getting old (one was not working).

Stayed in the 4-bed dorm for two nights. Very comfortable beds, a bit cramped when full. Excellent hot shower. Good breakfast, including pancakes which was nice. Has a nice lounge where you can watch tv and drink tea. Booked our 1-day tour of the lake and islands through the hostel which was great. Friendly family who run the hostel.

Recently stayed here for 2 nights.
Firstly in a basic twin room with shared bathroom which was fine but the bathroom was very dated, however water was hot.
Second night was in a private room with bath, room was nice, bathroom was newer but shower was very small.
Pancakes for breakfast were nice - but the manager came and stood next to our table at b'fast and stared at my partner for an uncomfortable amount of time -
Very strange - we think he thought we ate too many pancakes. 2 each disn't seem
Excessive??? Turned me off my b'fast.

We booked our bus to copacabana through the hostel which was convenient and included a taxi transfer to the terminal. HOWEVER, the bus company the hostel uses must run the oldest buses at the terminal. Every other bus was much newer. We also stopped twice along the 3hr journey for the bus driver to buy petrol from the side of the road. There are so many buses leaving at the same time don't bother prebooking - just
turn up at the terminal and pick which bus suits you. The hostel uses the colectur bus company.

A decent place with very helpful staff. It's clean, feels secure and has a kitchen and comfortable lounge area. That said, it's nothing spectacular and neither is Puno - we found Copacabana much nicer.
