Casona Plaza Hotel
Ranked #23 of 64 Hotels in Puno
Reviewed September 29, 2013

We had made a confirmed booking several months before our arrival with an international hotel booking company for Casona Plaza Hotel in Puno and had a confirmation email and other documentation attesting to this. When we arrived at the hotel at around lunchtime we were told by the receptionist that the hotel was full and there was no room for us. After some robust discussion the hotel agreed to check us in but said we would need to sleep at another hotel of a lesser quality but the rates would be the same. After further robust discussions the receptionists – by now several were involved with the matter – agreed to honour the confirmation and provide us with rooms we had booked. Why the problem? We speculated that it might have had something to do with the hotel accepting a later booking for a tour group. But this is speculation.
The Casona Plaza Hotel is located near the city centre and is within walking distance of the main square, museum and Coca Museum, several restaurants and other establishments serving alcohol.
The room was clean with relatively new carpeting. It had a telephone, flat screen TV, a small desk, a mini bar, an in room safe, and 2 heaters and provided a laundry service. There was a notable lack of information in the room. There was no price list provided for the mini bar, no laundry lists (but a laundry bag) and no in house telephone directory. We later discovered that laundry is charged by the kilo. One bottle of water per stay was complimentary.
The bathroom was dated but clean and had a shower over a half size bath tub. One towel, two cakes of soap and one vial of shampoo was provided. Unfortunately the plug in the tub did not work and there was a problem with the shower/tap system. A member of the staff visited the room in an attempt to fix it but was unable to do so. The water was pleasantly hot.
Breakfast, included in the room rate could be best described as a buffet continental, with the hotel offering one freshly fried or scrambled egg. There were plenty of bakery items and a wide variety of fresh fruit. All in all a satisfactory breakfast.
The hotel offered free Wi-Fi and two hotel computers could be used free of charge for 15 minutes a time.
After our initial confrontation with the hotel receptionists we found them quite pleasant and willing to assist when required.
The check-out went smoothly and efficiently and the very early wake- up call was on time.
The Casona Plaza Hotel apparently has a good reputation and is rated a four star establishment but it seems that it might need to work harder to preserve and deserve the reputation.

Room Tip: Bring your room confirmation material with you. You might need it!

Perfect location
Perfect breakfa
But the room was Shalford and no shower caps etc like a real for star hotel.
Wifi was on and off and poor
The City of Puno is ugly
But the Lake and the Isleham on it make up for the disillusion on land

It was such a comfortable stay in this hotel. They have had warm water every time of the day, a hair dryer and Cable TV. I remake the fact of having warm water because this is very important when you are in a cold place like Puno. They had a great variety of food for breakfast, it was delicious and the price is not too expensive.
You are not allowed to smoke into the hotel and the wi fi is very slow in some places.
After all, I think it was very good. You should stay in a place like this if you want to have a great time in Puno.

Room Tip: Rooms near elevator have a good Wi Fi signal. The Wi Fi is located in the center zones of the passa...

The hotel is a few blocks from the central plaza and restaurants. The hotel is clean. The room are big and comfortable. Rooms have a tube TV and hair drier . WiFi is only near the lobby and its slow. Staff is friendly and helpful. If you are out late at night they do lock the front door of the hotel. I later found out hotels all over Peru lock there doors. But there is someone at the desk that open the door

Stayed here as part of an organised tour.

My room was towards the back of the hotel and I swear above the kitchen. I found it to be quite noisy from about 5.30am. The only window in my room looked out onto an atrium which also contributed to the noise. I did use earplugs here. The bed and pillows however were really comfortable and the blankets / cover were very warm. There was also a small heater.

The hot water in the shower too several minutes to heat up, but once it did, it was great.

The staff were helpful and even opened the restaurant half an hour early so we could eat before we went out for an orientation tour with our guide. There was a good selection at breakfast.

Good location to everything and definitely visit the central market.

We stayed for two nights and would recommend this hotel. The staff were helpful and efficient, organising our Uros Islands trip and onward bus to Bolivia. The breakfast was excellent with lots of choice, including whole meal toast. Our bed was extremely comfortable and would have slept 3 or 4 easily! The location was convenient for the main square.

We found that the finest hotels had glass doors and were located on narrow streets in Peru! This was a very clean and elegant hotel decorated appropriately. Beds were very comfortable and the room was clean and warm. Small heaters were provided for those of us who thought they needed them. Breakfast was ample, local and fresh. Staff was helpful despite the language barrier: they did all they could do for us. Really a nice place to stay in Puno. Warning: take a map with you if you wander to the Mercado--we got lost without the name of the hotel, but another glass doored hotel helped us find our way back!
