If you are going to Puno then I would recommend staying at the Libertador if only because it is the best hotel on offer there. The Architecture leans more towards 60's Inner City Office Block than Inca Majesty which is a shame but there it is.

The hotel is nice and clean inside. Our room wasn't huge but adequate for a couple of nights. The bar downstairs had all the atmosphere of a Mormon Library which of course led us to grab a taxi into town every evening. The main pedestrian street in Puno is lively with plenty of good restaurants. It is cold at night and everyone dresses accordingly (woolley hats and coats) giving the place an oddly "Christmas" feel about it - in August !

The trip from the hotel out to the reed islands is worthwhile. A boat leaves from the jetty at the hotel and the trip takes a couple of hours. Go see the natives living on the islands, marvel at their reed boats. Buy their trinkets and admire their sola powered TV's and DVD players !

When we checked into the hotel, the Manager told us that we would have a nice view of the sun rising over Lake Titicaca - it was only when we opened the curtains the following morning that we realised what an understatement that was.

The Libertador has the best location of any hotel in Puno, sticking out on it's own "island" a few miles outside the main town centre. This is a good thing, as there is very little Puno can offer you to keep you from either the lake or your hotel.

The hotel stands out so strongly on it's promotory that it is known locally as "Alcatraz", but the accomodation is a bit nicer than that, with well-appointed rooms and bathrooms. The bar is nice, if a little quiet and the same can be said for the restaurant.

Well worth considering, if not for the views, then to keep you away from the town centre!

Our stay at the Libertador was good, but definitely not a five star property.

The lobby staff was less than friendly, and communicating with them proved difficult as they spoke very little English. Our biggest problem was with the room reservations. The entire hotel only has 2 triple rooms. When we tried to get a triple, it took 20 minutes to call their main office and discuss the feasibility of changing our reservations only to find out that they didn't have availibility in the first place.

The rooms were extremely small and the ceilings low. It felt more like a hotel room in Japan. However, they were very clean and the views were stunning. It was wonderful waking up to a sunrise over Lake Titicaca.

The hotel only has one real restaurant. The food was excellent and the service superb. However, they highly recommend reservations. The restaurant is small, so I recommend either making reservations or eating early to avoid the huge tour groups.

Finally, when we were there, they were repairing one of two elevators. The sole elevator working was extremely small and slow. We were on the top floor, so sometimes it took 5 minutes to get down to the main lobby.

Overall I would recommend this hotel; just don't expect spacious rooms.

The hotel is a soul free environment obviously designed by someone stuck in the late seventies. Tiny rooms which just dont work with two large adults and two large suitcases and as most guests are "en route" doing the Peru tour, they have two large suitcases. Dont expect to both get in the bathroom at the same time - thats just not possible. Public areas remind you of Heathrow Airport.

The only saving graces are the views and the restaurant. We thought the dinner here was excellent and so was the service in the Restaurant. We were not disappointed with Breakfast.

We stayed two nights at the Libertador Isla Esteves Hotel in Puno in the middle of May. We had a spacious room overlooking Lake Titicaca with a very nice view. The breakfast buffet had everything one would wish, and the dinner that we ate there was very good. Wireless internet was available for free in the room. The hotel has its own dock for the boat trips to the floating islands. It is about a 10 minute, 7 sole taxi ride to downtown Puno. We had a very pleasant stay there and really enjoyed the view.

We arrived late to this hotel and left early so can't comment on it's facilities, however the rooms were clean, if not a little basic, and the breakfast was fine. The service was average too. There was nothing good or bad to say about it really - it certainly wasn't very memorable!

The view from either side of the hotel however was superb, and other people we talked to who stayed here longer loved it.

Puno is a very poor town so this hotel is sheer luxury compared to it's surroundings.

This hotel claims to be 5 star but it certainly isn't. The views are good and it probably is the best option when staying in the Puno area. The whole hotel is souless. The rooms are small - you will walk into the bed at least once during your stay! The service was generally poor with the exception of the bar. No bell boys when we arrvied so carried out bags to the room ourselves. Whilst we are perfectly capable of doing this it is not what you expect in a 5 star establishment. The bar was deserted but the manager was quite happy to get us snacks, even things that were not on the menu so full marks for service there, it did take a long time to get the bill though. Breakfast was quite a poor selection and we had to ask 4 times for coffee. The hotel does not have its own generator so when the area experiences power cuts everything stops. The Sonesta does appear to have a generator as when the whole of Puno shut down we could still see lights at the Sonesta.
