“Poison dinner!”
Reviewed November 10, 2011

Used to travel by motocycle, reach places over 4.000m of altitude among Andes mountain without have altitude ill, it is a very commun situation for me. As soon as I arrived Sonesta Puno at 7pm coming from Shivay 300km over Colca Valley (5129ma) without any meal along the road (just mineral water, best practicies to ride along these roads) I decided to have dinner at hotel and order an simple lasagne bolognese and a coke because I thought it will be the best to do for a one night stay. Terrible wrong, the lasagna was bad and I spent all the night vomiting it until 6am on next mornig. On check out the manager said she was very sorry about the incident and afirm it happend because the altitude (Puno - just 3827 meters altitude) but they will give me a 50% discount on dinner in order do not seems it was the lasagna... If you pretend to stay in Puno, definitively stay for the same price on Libertador Hotel because Sonesta is a really turist trap as others described here.

Dear Mrs. Laubach: In the name of the hotel managers and partners want to thank you for taking a few minutes to comment about our service, it is very important for us to know how their expectations were met in the hotel. We offer our sincere apologies for the insident which was inside the hotel. we have been consulted our medical service asking about what could happen and they suggest that the stomach virus was contracted before coming and was manifested most strongly in the hotel for the height, The doctors call this virus such "The traveller virus", we must inform you also that it´s the first time presented a case like this in the hotel, we appreciate the patience and tolerance that you had and the problems that this can have, it´s a shame that we have that impression but I´m sure that somehow we will have the opportunity to change our image. This e-mail serves to invite to you to return the next time you visit our beautiful city or stay at any hotel in our chain, we will be waiting for you! If you have extra please contact us.

This hotel is considered the second best in town. Actually it is near town, not a reasonable walk to town. The room was one of the nicest we saw in Peru. The bathroom was the best The property is clean and well run. The restaurant is very clean and nice and the food about as good as it gets. There is a great view of the lake from the large windows in the restaurant and lake side rooms. The dock on the property was convenient; you can be picked up at it for a private tour. Consider booking a private tour to the floating islands. It is very affordable and will prevent you being held captive on those tiny islands with nothing to do except shop for useless junk. It was nice to be able to bird on the lake without leaving the property.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the lake side. There are new rooms being built on the far end that will be ava...

To start, let me just say that this hotel is not in the best location and if you're staying more than a couple of nights in Puno I would suggest you stay somewhere nearer the square.
That said, the hotel has great views over the lake and the staff there are so incredibly helpful.
The rooms are big and clean with massive beds that are extremely comfortable, with big TVs and the showers are really good.
Food-wise the evening food isn't great and I'd recommend going into town which the front desk can organise and its really cheap and easy to get back - just head towards the main square.
Breakfast is lovely with lots of fresh bread and pastries and fruit.
If you're out on tours on the Lake during the day and need this for a good breakfast and a great place to sleep then I would definately recommend this hotel. The staff were really helpful and as it was our honeymoon left a plate with congratulations in chocolates and cherries for us. And the view at breakfast is pretty lovely.

Room Tip: Get a lake view

For the money you pay, it should get a 2, not a 3 rating. Clean and staff is polite. Too far from anything. You can't just walk out and get a bite or buy crafts or anything. But they'll get you a cab in 10 mins if you need one. Not a social place as guests seem to stick to their tour groups. The views are great, but otherwise it's a terribly boring place. I liked the breakfast.
What we really hated was that they hit us with an extra 10% service charge as we check out. Note: This is not tax or anything. This was never mentioned when we made the reservation. I don't understand how it's OK to just spring it on us. Isn't service (housekeeping, calling a cab if you ask the front desk) included in a hotel stay??? A hotel stay is different fromrenting a room from a landlord.

Room Tip: They automatically put us in room 126, the one without much of a view. We asked to move and were mov...

We stayed in this hotel only two nights as we were part of a tour of Peru with 4-5 stars hotels.

I was worried because of the bad comments and many complaintes on tripadvisor but I have to say that I fully disagree or simply I have been lucky!

Location: the hotel is located next to the lake so you can experience a beautiful landscape but it is not in a walking distance to the city (I haven't been in the city centre, I only passed there by bus but the city seemed not attractive at all!!).

Staff: kind and collaborative.

Room: not large but ok, good bathroom and a big window on the lake. Good mattress. Two bottles of water offered.

Breakfast: there was a big selection of sweet and salad of a good quality (not excellent but good). Service ok.

Dinner: The food is good for taste and quantity (not excellent), waiters are well trained and if you are lucky you can have dinner just next to fireplace. As there's a glass side of the room to see the lake and temperatures are low, remember to bring an additional sweater. Only inconvenient: if you have dinner in rush hour you could have to wait a lot so try to be there before 8:00 p.m. (the first night we waited 1 long hour).

There's no elevator and even if there's only the first floor you should climb up step slowly as at 4000 m if you make an effort you start immediately to pant.

Maybe this hotel is not a 4 star hotel but compared to other experienced during Peru tour, it is good and nothing will really affect your permanency.

The good part here is the view over the lake, enhanced by the Yavari steamboat moored directly behind the hotel which is worth a quick visit. The sweet enthusiastic guide will show you around. I got good photos out of my window at dusk and dawn with the changing light .

Otherwise little to recommend. Its drab, dingy, old fashioned and dull throughout. Service is so so. Coca tea in reception often ran out or was left to get tepid, photos for sale on the walls are expensive, poorly hung and dropping off, corridors dingy, carpets dark and look very old. It was described to us as 'refurbished', but with the exception of the bathrooms which were perfectly ok and maybe less old than the room, the rest looks badly in need of refurbishing to me. Food was perfectly Ok but not memorable

The worst part was that the air quality in the rooms seemed to be very bad - we both slept very poorly here and got stuffy noses and headaches whenever in the room for any time at all - we didnt think this was just altitude, as we had been in Arequipa and Colca before coming here, and symptoms seemed to ease as soon as we left our room and went out or even just to the restaurant or reception. It felt like the rooms didnt allow air to circulate at all.

The most unmemorable hotel out of the 7 we used in Peru.

However, you will get a laugh at the translations on the dinner menu:

'trout to the steam and you eat the native'

'attacked spinach'

'vegetable sandwich in bread he whistles with landfill of veg to the gridiron'

Seems like this place just caters to Tour groups, in and out. Restaurant and Bar had good food and drinks. No convenience shop and in the middle of nowhere to walk to. The whole place seemed tired, and in need of a facelift. The rooms were huge, and the views were amazing. Would not come back. Nothing horrible, just the location and lack of amenities turned me off. You cannot get off the Andean Explorer here, even though the train passes right in front of the Hotel.
