As part of a Gate One tour, we went to the floating islands. They were interesting, but not worth the time.

After a demonstration of how the islands were built, we were escorted into their little huts. Some had Satellite dishes which helped destroy any illusion of primitive housing.
Next they were showing us thinnest to purchase They seemed to be overprices to me.

Afterwards they wanted us to ride another boat to a different island -- At a charge!!
Our tour took us to that other island anyway for no charge. However the island has items for sale, food for purchase and drinks for purchase. They even charged to use the restroom.

Just another tourist TRAP

We spent several hours touring the floating island and meeting the people. While it was commercial it was most fascinating how these people live.

One way for the Peruvian autochtone families living on the Uros to make extra income is offering tourists the opportunity to visit their floating homes. Great idea! Yes, touristy, but well-worthy. The families do not speak English, so if you do not speak Spanish, take a tour with an English-speaking guide who knows most of the families and will narrate lots of interesting history for you.

Went late morning by ourselves and not on a guided tour. Interesting place, the presentation was in only Spanish which was to be expected. A bit commercial

Usually included in a guided tour of the Lake Titicaca area, the Uros Floating Islands may depend on income from tourists, but the families on these papyrus-constructed islets seem to live an independent life of their own in a cheerful spirit, and their resourcefulness in harnessing nature to their needs is quite remarkable. There is little pressure to spend more than necessary, and the artisan goods on offer are made on site and are of good quality.
