To visit the first south America steam boat, fully restored. Captain or his deputy will make you a guided tour, show beautiful copper engine parts and many other artifacts... There is no official fee so you are invited to leave a small donation. Great visit and no other visitors on the ship, just us...

The history of this ship is astounding and a wonderful job has been done of the restoration, Everyone involved is so proud of the Yavari and even though I am not madly interested in boats or old engines, I couldn't help but be moved and fascinated. You can stay overnight on board in one of the cabins (I think they can take a maximum of 6 staying at once for B&B). We had been pretty disappointed with Puno, but this was a highlight. The adjacent hotel, Sonesta Posada Hotel del Inca, had ice cold beer and you can sit in the bar area looking out at some reed beds and a bunch of wild guinea pigs dashing about on the grass. Very charming, enjoyed the visit very much.

The restored ship Yavari is well worth the trip from central Puno if you are are a history buff! A short taxi ride will drop you off at a hotel adjacent to where the ship is berthed. I had the boat to myself to explore and fully check out - you can get a spanish speaking guide however there are brochures in english that cover all the details. It has been very well refurbished and is used periodically for special events and sailings. I can't believe that there are no information about the ship and it's sister vessel in the city tourist spots - I read up on it and asked locals how to get there. No charge however a donation is appreciated. Remarkable history!

We were taken here at the end of a long day on the lake and if you are not interested in engines, boats or naval things it can be information overload. Getting to it on the wobbly bridge was interesting.

The Young man who showed us around was obviously very proud of the boat, we spent a nice hour touring around admiring. Highly recommended.
