Anaconda Lodge

I had an amazing time at the Anaconda Lodge. I stayed with 2 friends in a bungalow, which consisted of two floors, a living room, and a bathroom. They had electricity and lights in each room, and a fan in the living area. Getting to our cabana at night required the use of our flashlights, which we brought from home. As our cabana was constructed out of wood and wire screens, it did not keep certain insect and arachnid friends from entering. We had to remove at least one baby tarantula, beetle, and cockroach per day, plus there were often carpenter ants in the bathroom. If you are not a friend of nature, no lodge is right for you. Otherwise, it was very clean and housekeeping came in each day to replace our towels, sweep, and tidy the bathroom. Our beds also had mosquito nets (so don't worry about things crawling on you at night). There must have been a party at a neighboring lodge one night and their music was clearly audible in our room until at least 2am.
The pool was the perfect spot to sunbath and cool off. The lodge served up amazing Thai dishes but the portions were not great. Breakfast, on the other hand, was a large buffet of fruits, bread, pancakes, eggs, and some vegetables. The owners of the lodge rescue baby monkeys before they are released into the wild, as a result you are likely to see monkeys playing around the lodge. They are quite friendly but will nip at you if you pick them up. But be prepared -they will jump on you and use you as part of their jungle gym!
If you ask in advance they will arrange an ayahuasca ceremony. If you are on the fence about partaking in this amazonian cleansing ritual (which involves a hallucinogenic drink that tastes like fermented vomit) I would advise you to pass.
The lodge is a 15-min mototaxi ride from the center of town, and it will cost you between S/.7-10 to get there. However, the town doesn't have all that much anyway other than 2-3 decent restaurants and a ton of bars/discotecas. Just ask at the main lodge for them to call a taxi. The ride to the airport is less than 5 minutes and the lodge will provide transportation to and from the airport free of charge if you request it.
The owners are very accommodating and will do whatever they can to make you comfortable here and in Puerto Maldonado. You don't even have to leave the lodge to book your trip to Lago Sandoval.

Room Tip: Go with a group and get your own bungalow! We stayed in #4, which had two bedrooms: one with a doubl...

We had such a great time for the few days we were there. Cabin 15 was perfect for the two of us and the food was awesome. We also had no problems grabbing a Taxi Bike to go into town. Donald was able t o set up our Lake Sandoval trip very easily for the next day.

We LOVE THIS PLACE!!! We have traveled many places, but this place is amazing!!! Where else can you sleep with monkeys outside your door. We talk about the monkeys all the time. We just had a son and we can't wait to take him here. WHAT AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!! The owners are so wonderful they rescue orphaned monkeys and give them a wonderful place to live. The monkeys are free to come and go as they would like. No cages. Just the wonderful trees. You feel honored to live with them in there home. THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP!!

We found ants, mosquitos, cucharas, spiders and a frog in our room.
Sheets and matress were old and hard.
Not shampoo and soap really tiny.
We liked the monkies all over the place and thiland food that they serve there.

I had the best experience! i didn't sleep there but i wish i had!
They were very friendly and down to earth people!
The food was very nice and worth trying for sure! you can feed the monkeys with grapes and stuff and take a swim in their small but cool pool! And all that in the middle of the jungle... Not too far from the centrum of the little town!

the date was in 2010 june

I had doubts about staying in town rather than booking a package at one of the more remote lodges for my two nights and three days. I am SO glad I stayed at Anaconda Lodge! This is a great way to get the lodge experience without all the packed-to-the-minute programming of a tour. It's near town, but you feel like you're in the jungle and miles from anything. The cabins are beautifully constructed, clean and with warm showers (which I heard from fellow travelers is quite hard to come by in the area.) As soon as I arrived, I felt welcome and mellow. Donald, Wadee and the other volunteers create an air of welcoming you into their haven. They are happy to help planning tours or other activities (and these are accessible from town. I went to Lake Sandoval one day.) But I found myself equally happy to enjoy the grounds, great lounge space and the hospitality. My best couple of hours were lounging in the hammock, while the two pet baby howler monkeys scurried back and forth, playing and cuddling with me. What a treat having this up close and personal chance to hang with the monkeys! The Thai food was awesome, and everything was friendly and fun. Machu Pichu is the destination for so many visiting Peru. For me, Anaconda lodge was the cherry on top of my trip!

My partner and I had the pleasure of spending two nights at the Anaconda Lodge in May 2012: Though the place is very accessible from the airport you feel like you are miles away from anything. The lodge we were given was enormous, you could have fit a family of 7 easily. We booked a 2 day package that included EVERYTHING including beverages (beer too, which is highly unusual). It also included a fantastic excursion along the river to Lake Sandoval with a well versed, English speaking native guide who helped us find the giant otters, cayman and many birds.
The food at the lodge was great very fresh Thai food (which I love) and enormous, fresh pancakes for b-fest. But of course as other posters have said, it's ALL ABOUT the monkeys! They are amazing, how many times in your life can you nap on a hammock with a little monkey in your lap?? I could have spent a month at the Anaconda just to have more time with the monkeys. We also enjoyed sitting around the main lodge at night telling stories with fellow travelers and the owner, Donald who is something of a Peru expert and published author.
IF you want the following: TV, WiFi, fancy linens, or things like that then this isn't the hotel for you, but if you want to REALLY feel like you are in the jungle this is the place. Also, the price was quite good compared to other properties and you dont' have to deal with 300 other tourists, we had a great time with our fellow guests but there were only so many. Anaconda Lodge provides a wild, intimate and rustic jungle experience.

Room Tip: Be sure to bring a flashlight! It gets dark in the jungle at night!
