“Great experience with Rainforest Expeditions to Refugio and Posada Amazonas lodges”
Reviewed December 16, 2013

Our trip to the Peruvian Amazon was made easy by Rainforest Expeditions. Everything was professionally organised and excellent information was provided at all times. When there was a minor issue with the boat not arriving to take us from Posada to Refugio, the manager apologised, gave us a bottle of wine and then a free massage when we arrived at Refugio the next morning.

Our personal guide Nilton was fantastic. He was incredibly knowledgable and great company. His interest in the wildlife and forest was evident and anyone would be lucky to him him as a guide.

The rooms are in long buildings with no ceilings to enable airflow. There is no outer wall which provides unobstructed views to the jungle. Mostly this was fine as generally other guests were considerate and quiet. However, it should be noted that all sounds in the rooms can be easily heard so please be very considerate of your neighbours. One night there were some extremely loud Italian guests talking a full volume and banging in a door or something and it was a real problem.

Not all rooms have electricity either. Electricity is only for a few hours at night anyway, and I think the lanterns add to the 'jungle experience'. Take plenty of mosquito repellant, a rain jacket and head torches if you go. Food is plentiful and very good and the barman at Refugio makes the best pisco sours to be had in all Peru.

Highly recommended!

Beautiful place, all logistics handled professionally and with great care. The itinerary maximises the Amazon experience in just a few short days. Daniel our guide was very knowledgeable and great company for our group. Exceeded my expectations, I absolutely loved it.

Our first 3 night/4 day stay in a 2 week vacation in Peru, the Amazon was the beginning of a truly exciting vacation. From Nov 21-24 we entered the jungle expecting rain, but the skies were kind to us and it had rained days before we arrived and only sunshine while we were there. The Refugio Amazonas was a little jewel in the jungle, rustic yet lovely. With one side of our bedroom completely open to the jungle we felt secure under the mosquito netting over our bed. With all the sounds of the jungle, it took the first night to get used to it but it felt fresh and exciting. The food was very good with a Peruvian flare. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. Our guide, Naum, was simply THE BEST! He spoke perfect English, was very attentive to our group's needs and had amazing knowledge about everything from the history of Peru to every sound in the jungle. He specializes in birds and he made 'birders' out of us all with his amazing stories and facts. The lodge provides wellington boots for sloshing around in the jungle mud which made it more enjoyable. It was still very warm at this time of the year, but we feel we lucked out with everything and had an amazing experience. A must do when in Peru!

Our stay in the Amazon was at the beginning of our trip to Peru. Frankly this one one of the most eye opening experiences of our lives. The accommodation were basic and charming at the same time. The open air feeling was remarkable. Food was with a local flavouring and emphasis on traditional, we found however the food was never really hot, which seemed to be a commonality in all of Peru.
In discussion with others who have visited the amazon in Ecuador and Brazil this is better preserved and the opportunities afforded much greater.
Our guide, Yuri was truly exceptional and knowledgable and provided our small group a life remembering experience

Our stay in the amazon was at the end of a 3 week trip through Peru and it was a fantastic end of a wonderful time in this lovely country. The rooms were clean and surprising - with no outside windows/walls and no real doors, you really felt like literally being right in the middle of the jungle! Sleeping to the sounds of the birds etc was a wonderful experience I wouldn't like to miss. The food was great and we really weren't left hungry! The staff were lovely and courteous and I liked the fact that the lodge was eco-friendly and really lived that fact, no pretension. The boat trip to the lodge was an experience in itself with lots of flora and fauna to be seen. Our night trek was my personal highlight here! Definitely would recommend this lodge to anyone!!

The staff could not do enough to help! The food was very good and "special diets" accommodated for exceptionally well. Although the rooms are basic, they are clean and comfortable, what more could you expect in the middle of the jungle ! An experience never to be forgotten.

We stayed here during a four-day trip to the Amazon Jungle. Having arrived in Lima and stayed also in Cusco, this was a REAL surprise. A three hour journey in a small wooden boat with outboard motor up river was a genuine surprise to those used to creature comforts, and we honestly expected something pretty basic. Not at all. Refugio Amazonas is a beautiful wooden hotel in the middle of the Jungle and, far from roughing it you are treated REALLY well.
The place itself is a really beautiful wooden and Bamboo structure and the impression on arrival is....Wow!
The hospitality, food and drink is really great, considering that this place is miles from anywhere in the Jungle.

You are really unlikely to have experienced anything like this before.....Enjoy!

Room Tip: Not Applicable. All rooms face the jungle!
