Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Reviewed September 19, 2013

We stayed here for three nights at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica during our tour of Peru. You are met at the airport by a Inkaterra and giving a refreshing bottle of cold water and then taken to the Inkaterra butterfly house for the check-in. You are met the with a refreshing ice drink of star fruit and a cold wet face towel. After about fifteen minutes you are bussed to the river where you catch a motorised canoe for the 45 minute trip down river.
Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is a complex of cabins and a main house where all e excellent meals are taken. We had cabin 24 which was very near the river. In the evening there is tilly lamps provided for extra light.
We went on several excursion with a guide called Luis who was simple brilliant and I would recommend trying to get him as your guide. We saw 5 species of monkey including the rarely seen Owl Night Monkey. Both Two Toed & Three Toed Sloths, Both White & Black Caimen and also Giant River Otters. Loads of different types of birds to be seen including many species of Parrots and Hummingbirds
The night excursion are not for the faint hearted as you get quite close to some very big spiders!!
Would have loved to have stayed longer and will certainly return one day.

We stayed for three nights in late December (sorry for the late review!) and had a great time. The rooms were clean, the staff was friendly, the tours were great, and the food was surprisingly good. Three days was the perfect amount of time to stay as it allowed time to relax and not feel pressured to be on the go the whole time. I would recommend booking a spa treatment on the first day you get there since they do have a tendency to fill up fast.

We enjoyed three night in Inkaterra Amazonica. The interpreter was very helpful, eager and proactive. Activities nicely mixed with relaxing. The dinner by the end of the day was an amuse. Our integration in the environment of Madre des Dios curative for body and soul. Highly recommended.

We spent three nights at this beautiful resort. We loved our cabana, which was situated right alongside the Madre de Dios River. It was beautiful and comfortable, and we really enjoyed its rustic nature. The main lodge was stunning and we enjoyed having our meals and drinks there. The food was good, though the dinner options were very limited. The staff was always helpful and pleasant. Finally, while we enjoyed all our excursions, we found them to be rather repetitive. By our final day, we had lost interest in them. (I would, however, recommend the night river tour.) I've read other reviews and one thing to consider is that your experience may be different depending on the season. I can see how the proximity of the cabanas may make it loud, but the resort was nearly empty when we were there. Others report being cold, but we had the opposite climate: oppressively high heat during the day (even though it was winter).

Room Tip: Ask for a cabana alongside the river.

We stayed four nights and did about all the excursions offered. Moises was our personal guide for the four days and was very knowledgeable and observant seeing everything from tree sloths to tiny praying mantis and of course plenty of things in between. The highlight of our trip was the all day piranha fishing trip were what we caught was cooked for us. Also, Lake Sandoval, medicinal herb garden and model farm were great. Food was okay, hard to get best ingredients so far from town and with only limited electricity but staff was friendly and sometimes prepared plain items for our kids off menu. Weather in August was perfect, a brief rain shower one morning caused us to reschedule some things but besides that cool a night, warm during the day. Rooms / cabins were great, like camping but with turn down service....

We had an amazing time. We had a cabin (#8) right on the water and the views were great especially for sunrise. The excursions were all very good (lake sandoval, canapy, gramita creek, concepcion, night walk and night boat). Take the time to look up in the sky at night, we saw the southern cross and even Venus. We did see wildlife (monkeys, parrots , macaws, caimen, river otters and stinky birds along with all the creepy crawlers) but do know this is not an african safari as picture taking can be very difficult. The staff was very helpful and our guide Annibel was fabulous. Here is the reasons why we couldnt give 5 stars. We had paid for a private guide and that turned out to be that you had a guide assigned to just you but you took the same boats the same walks and were on the same timetable as everyone else. This would have been okay but not when you are put on a canoe at lake Sandavol with 14 other guests including a sceaming child with everyone else on the boat speaking spanish. Kind of kills the purpose of having a private guide. The other thing is that Inkaterra should post a min recommended age for guests. This was repeated often amongst guests as the lodge was full with children including the above referrenced 2to 3yrs old whom no fault of the child just wasnt ready for this environment and was crying throughout the excursions and through the night. It got so bad one night that one of the guests had to yell at a group of parents who had there children yelling and crying late at night when other guest were trying to sleep for a 5am wakeup. I understand that this is a child friendly place but parents should use some common sence when deciding to bring young children to the Amazon. I wouldnt say not to make the trip for this reason but be aware. Finally on our last day we were told we needed to be packed and ready to go at 9am for 1 pm flight pretty much ruined that day as all we did was sit at the airport for 2 plus hours so another group at their sister site could have lunch at the airport restaurant. Not a great last impression for what otherwise was a great trip

Room Tip: Cabin number 8 by the river

Dear guest,

We appreciate the time you took to write about your stay at our property; thank you for your kind comments as well as for your feedback that will allow us to keep improving our service.

Because of the remote location of our property, we do not recommend it for children under 5 as indicated in our website and as informed to every guest that is interested in going with children so they can take the best decision. We apologize that this caused some discomfort during your stay.

We offer private guides to go with our guests in the different excursions as part of our additional services; we also offer excursions in private that include a private guide and transportation. Based on your comments, this second option should have been a better option for you. We will improve the communication of our additional services available.

Regarding the schedule of the departure times from the hotel, they are organized considering the trip time from the lodge to Puerto Maldonado and airport regulations that indicate guests should be at the airport at least 2 hours before the departure time.

Despite the points mentioned above, we are glad you enjoyed your cabaña as well as the excursions and the beautiful sky in the Southern Peruvian Rainforest.

Thank you again for your comments and for staying at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica!

We stayed at the Reserva Amazonica and were unfortunate enough to be there during the cold front which meant that the lack of solid walls in the cabins meant for some very cold nights indeed. Even with the welcome hot water bottle in the beds it was still freezing. We had dinner wearing 3 or 4 layers.

The food was good and although limited choices in the evening, you have to marvel and the way that food of this quality is produced so remotely.

I have a small objection to the lack of power times. Power is on most of the time but for much of that you are out on trips. We really would have benefitted from having power go on earlier in the evening especially as this would have given us hot water before the evening excursions.

On the plus side the staff were excellent and the guides knowledgeable and pleasingly not trying to give the hard sell to those trips which were extra. Lake Sandoval was a good trip and the night boat trip to see wildlife really good. We also enjoyed the visit to the Canopy Walk and the farm and canoeing trip. In truth however, by the last afternoon they seemed to run out of ideas and the trip to their other lodge to see medicinal plants was not very interesting or worthwhile.

I say that there is a better option because we then went on to Iquitos and did a 3 day trip on the M/V Aria which was perfect. I have not priced them against each other but for me there was no contest, the Aria was very luxurious, more remote and better wildlife opportunities.

We had the cabin with a plunge pool but given the weather had no use of it.

Dear guest,

Thank you for sharing with us your experience at our property. We appreciate your kind comments as well as your feedback that will allow us to keep improving.

The Tambopata National Reserve -adjacent to Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica- is one of the last easily accessible virgin tropical rainforests in the world. The Reserve, a 274,690-hectare area (678,774-acre), offers a wealth of biodiversity, as well as magnificent natural landscapes.

We are sorry that the "friajes" or Patagonia Cold Front affected part of your experience, but despite this weather condition, we are glad you enjoyed the excursions and food provided.

Thank you for staying at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica during your visit to Peru!
