Probably best to start with the positives. The vast majority of the staff were friendly and helpful. Particularly high marks go to Busy Bee who organised a fantastic tour up and down the Madang coastline which took in a huge amount of stuff in a single day. The location is great - Madang is much prettier than some other towns in PNG. The local 9 hole golf course is good fun for a day, and obviously there is lots of snorkelling and diving close by - the hotel has a good dive centre attached.

As for the hotel itself, the lower priced rooms are pretty basic. Aircon yes, but crumbling tiles in the bathrooms, basic shower, straggly curtains and generally dimly lit. A few more pictures on the walls could do a world of good. The food in the restaurant was fine, but a bit old fashioned. The main restaurant feels very 80s, which may appeal to some, but could be so much better with some modernisation, as the shoreside location is beautiful.

Overall, the hotel clearly is better than everything else in Madang, and is priced much more competitively than Moresby or the Highlands. And obviously as a tourist travelling around PNG, you set your expectations differently to other countries in Asia. But if PNG wants to attract more tourists as a travel/dive destination, then the hotels like this need a bit more smartening up and modernising.

Room Tip: Probably worth coughing up for the more expensive beachside chalets as these had just been refurbish...

Thank you for your review. We appreciate seeing ourselves through the eyes of our guests.
The garden wing is a budget wing and the last 12 rooms of the former Madang Hotel. The rest of the Resort has been totally rebuilt over the past 2 decades and refurbished at regular intervals. We have delayed in the replacement of the Garden Wing as the rate of these rooms are the least expensive in Madang. The rate is K199 which includes a full buffet breakfast which in reality converts in real terms to a mere AUD$58.00 for the room which includes bathroom, air conditioning, satellite TV, radio, private balcony plus all the services of the Resort including access to 4 pools, 2 lagoon, gymnasium, dive shop, marina, tennis courts, kayaks, sailing catamarans, game fishing, sightseeing tours, cruises on a waterfront site unequalled in PNG -
The rate of most guest houses in Madang without private bathroom and the facilities mentioned above are more expensive so comparatively, it is absurd to say some parts were tired without clarifying what is included.
We would be delighted to replace the Garden Wing, but this would dictate a major increase in tariff which many Papua New Guineans could not afford. In the case of a visitor, you can choose to stay in the Garden Wing with all the facilities, or stay elsewhere without - it a choice guests must make.
Keep in mind we have 80 Executive Room. 70 De-Luxe Rooms, 20 cottages plus 2 Presidential Suites apart from the 12 Garden Wing all of which are NOT tired but obviously come at a higher cost.
We are pleased you were satisfied with other services, the location our friendly staff and of course Busy Bee, one of our Senior Tourist Guides - We hope to see you again in the future.
Sir Peter Barter

In need of some R&R after working in Port Moresby I was recommended Madang area and the place to stay is definitely Madang Resort. Certainly one of the prettiest areas in PNG.
I had one of the very spacious rooms looking out to nearby islands and wonderful to sit on the balcony and watch all the water traffic going by. The full day excursion, going both north and south of Madang town were made all the more enjoyable by the knowledge and commentary of "Mr Busy Bee"! Staff friendly and nothing too much trouble. Just expect any where in PNG that eating in restaurants and wine is more expensive than Australia as most items have to be imported.

We appreciate you taking time to write such a positive review. It encourages our staff to keep up the good work in making our guests feel at home. Busy Bee is his real name, he comes from near Mt Hagen and his full name is Busy Bee Kunjip, he has been with us for 3 decades and considered to bey one of the best tourist guides in Papua New Guinea, we are all very proud of him.
In regard to costs of food, it is true that some of the food items are imported, but the majority are locally produced such as vegetables from Highlands, meat from Ramu Valley, Seafood, pork and poultry from Madang. One of the major factors for the high costs is due to the mineral resource development which for the past few years as the demand has been greater than supply as a consequence the cost increased to an alarming level. There is now a situation when supply has caught up with demand and we are doing our best to hold or even reduce costs if possible. The result has been that the cost of food in hotels, restaurants (an mining camps have increased. Be assured we are doing best to keep cost of meals as low as possible. You may have also been aware that we offer complimentary breakfasts and in the evening we offer a table d'hote special of 3 courses for K45.00, convert this to Australian dollars it is a mere AUD$18.00 which is very reasonable.
We look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to Madang.

I have just returned from a holiday in Madang in Papua New Guinea and I had the pleasure of eating at the restaurant at the Madang Resort again. What a treat! As a vegetarian, the menu is comprehensive, however, the waiter suggested he speak to the chef to recommend a meal which I may like which wasn't on the menu. The result was the most delicious vegetarian pasta! As I have found many times before, nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff at the restaurant. An absolute must that everyone must try is one of the fruit smoothies made to order with fresh seasonal fruit. Nothing has ever tasted so delicious.

The new plantation shutters in the dining room are beautiful and are the perfect frame for the vista out onto the Madang Harbour and neighbouring islands. The sound of the waves and the view of the moon rising was spectacular and we didn't even have to leave our table! The view from the dining room is spectacular.

Thank you Sir Peter Barter for your wonderful hospitality ... and your beautiful piano playing. The staff at the resort are a credit to you, they are professional, courteous and always happy to oblige. I will continue to recommend the Madang Resort to anyone who is travelling to Madang.

Stayed here in November 2012. Madang is a beautiful place and the location of the resort enables you to enjoy the setting. The rooms are spacious and reasonably well equipped by PNG standards. The restaurant is quite good. My main comment would be that it is tired and badly in need of a spiffing up.

Thanks for your review. I am rather concerned about your comment it is looking tired? The Madang Resort has just undergone millions of kina upgrades including the new Haus Kibung, the new Haus win Restaurant and the entire complex of both Madang Resort and Kalibobo Village is undergoing total repainting of all rooms and the gardens are kept in excellent condition.
Your stay was I believe in November last year, it is surprising that it has take you so long to respond and I wonder if you have not perhaps confused the Madang Resort with another hotel as your comments are not consistent with other reviews.

I have never stayed as a guest in Madang Resort but I am living in Madang few kms. away from this resort and eversince we have moved in Madang since February of this year, The Resort has been part of our weekends. We really love to dine and stroll around Madang Resort. They have friendly staffs, Security is very good. There is a good showcase of local artworks and a mini zoo with locally thriving birds and lemurs. The Victoria crowned pigeon is simply amazing. The owner Sir Peter Barter is really a great guy, very friendly and always gives warm welcome.to the guests and oh he is great on the keyboards. Madang Resort is the summary of Beautiful Madang.

Thank you for taking time to write a review, it is all the more interesting to receive reviews from Madang residents as they would be aware of the time it has taken to build what is considered to the the finest resort in PNG.
What is more important to me is that the Madang Resort has largely become the heart of Madang, I am very proud of the role it has taken with various projects that benefit the community along with the support we receive from the community.
One of these current projects is the restoration of the Haus Tumbuna (Museum), the Nicholay Mikloucho=Maclay Memorial at Garagassi Point which is about ready to fall into the sea unless we construct a seawall, Other projects nclude the maintenance of the Dental Ward at Modilon Hospital, raising of funds for X Ray Macine for Gaubin Hospital, re-roofing of the Gaubin Hospital - all these projects have been initiated by the Melanesian Foundation and there are many more!
Again, thank you for your kind remarks.

I stayed at the Madang Resort Hotel for six nights this June on vacation. The resort grounds were absolutely beautiful and the birds and flowers on the grounds are amazing. The salt water pool was fantastic and the rooms were clean and comfortable. We found the prices for food at the restaurants expensive, but the food was tasty.

I highly recommend a tour with Busy Bee - we did two full day tours (WWII sites and the village tour with singsing) and Busy Bee is an excellent guide with great local knowledge.
