This is a review specifically of Madang Lodge's budget rooms, which are a dream come true for travelers without bottomless pockets. It's a bit like staying in a youth hostel or backpacker with a five-star hotel attached. I do not exaggerate. The budget rooms are arranged around their own little courtyard (perfectly manicured like everything else at ML), and consist of basic but immaculately clean little rooms, either twin-bedded or single. There is a male and female shower block at each corner of the courtyard, also kept very clean, although the hot water is a bit temperamental. Staying in these incredibly priced rooms then entitles you to all the other amenities at ML: the pool, the fitness centre, the restaurant, everything. So save your toea, book into one of these very affordable rooms and still enjoy watching the sun rise over the Bismarck Sea in the morning from the deck of the restaurant.
