Vereda Tropical Hotel

We went to Taboga for the day and found this very nice small hotel and restaurant. We did not see their rooms, we were told they are air conditioned, but at the time we went the restaurant was pretty hot, as they do not have any part which is air conditioned. Food is simple fare, but good. The pizzas are well made, we were surprised no hamburgers available on the menu. The best option on the island.

I enjoyed my stay. The staff was helpful, the rooms were comfortable, the AC was a relief, and the view was stunning. Most interestingly, the restaurant was pretty good. The prices were a bit inflated, but the quality was good. If you like pizza, get it! I was pleasantly surprised. Nonetheless, be prepared to wait…the service at the restaurant is slow!

We ate at Vereda Tropical Hotel the four nights we were in Taboga. There are not too many options, but that is okay as the dinners at Vereda were wonderful. We had seafood 3 of the 4 nights - it was fresh and very tasty. The scenery from the terrace was lovely, the service was great and the Sangria terrific. The jazz music (which we normally enjoy) seemed out of place but so long as you focused on the sounds of the surf the music is easily forgotten.

Amazing, charming little hotel with nice fish in the restaurant and attentive staff. Hotel is really super charming and lovely, so the base for a fantastic place is here.

But, the breakfast sucks, i mean it's the worst breakfast i have ever had, and i've visited over a hundred hotels, inns and b&Bs worldwide, including the worlds' poorest countries. Breakfast is LITERALLY: 2 pieces of white bread, a coffee and a glass of (not fresh) juice... Seriously, who calls that "breakfast"?

And FYI: eggs are 0.50$ in most shops so why not just give a small egg? It would cheer up the whole "breakfast". Or give guests some choice (for example; extra omelet for $1.50 - $2.00 etc. etc.)

WiFi is mediocre, but i'm used to that by now. It's probably considered average / good by others that don't need to work here.

Also, i noticed in the administration that just 1 room was occupied, we came early (because of the ferry) and could not get a room before 2PM? I understand but at least have some flexibility if the hotel is almost completely empty...

Toilet in our room is very outdated and cannot be cleaned anymore (looks dirty but is not, it's just very old). These type of New Toilets are $50 or less in panama City! So just buy one.... I mean $75 is not exactly cheap in Panama so do some effort please.

Funny detail; staff was baking eggs in the kitchen for themselves while we were almost starving.

For the rest no complains at all, i was just very very surprised by this breakfast.

You can see the hotel from the boat dock so if you don't have a reservation go straight there. We were lucky and got the last room on a long weekend. We were able to check in at 1100 which was an added bonus. It was small but we are not there to stay in the room. The bathroom had beautiful blue tile and the bed was made up with colorful local bedding. There was ac, a fan and a tv (but no english language stations, unlike other hotels on this trip around the country). Be sure to turn on the switch on the shower head to access hot water! The view made up for any complaints about the size of the room and the dining room overlooking the water was spectacular. All in all great value for the price.

Room Tip: Reserve ahead. Be careful, you may like the idea of a water view room but the main street below is...

Dec. 2001: We planned a day trip to see the island but were so enchanted we stayed overnight. We had an excellent hike up to the giant cross high atop the island, Cerro de la Cruz along with the San Pedro church built in 1524 or 1514 -- I can't remember exactly. Excellent historical significance. Lots of sea glass and we found what we think is an old pirate toggle button. It isn't pristine though, trash in lots of deserted places around the island. That, however, does not keep me from wanting to return. The flowers are simply astounding with bright, vibrant colors blooming all around...even coconuts sprouting on the roadside. Definitely worth the trip on the ferry, I can't wait to go back and have Ron Abuelo rum while sitting on the balcony. Food was a little pricey, but good.

Room Tip: If you are expecting a 5 star hotel, this isn't the place for you but it was excellent in my opi...

A brief, but very pleasant, ferry ride 12 miles from Panama City, brings you to the idyllic Isla Taboga. High on the hill overlooking the Island, is the Vereda Tropical Hotel, a charming hotel surrounded by houses in brilliant colors as well as tropical flowers blooming everywhere. Greeted warmly by the staff, we selected a corner room with a small balcony opening to the ocean and a side one opening to the flowers and multi-colored houses. The room had an airconditioner, but we slept with the windows open to the sound of breaking waves and the surf and a cool breeze carrying the scent of flowers. The restaurant food was always freshly made, attractively presented and accompanied by fresh herbs. Delicious! Another plus, my husband has limited mobility and uses assistive devices as needed, including an occasional wheel chair. Always the staff was accommodating, quickly volunteering to assist if needed. We intended to stay one day, stayed two, and are making plans to return in January 2013. We highly recommend Isla Taboga, this charming hotel and the wonderful staff. We have many fond memories to take us through the rest of winter here.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front face the ocean and beach.
