Upon arrival our room was so musty there was no way to stay for any length of time. We were first told nothing could be done until the following day by a lady on the desk. Spoke with a gentleman who magically found us another room within minutes. Strange within a matter of minutes another 2 rooms became available. We were offered a choice of 2
We quickly learned that if You were not inclusive plus you were considered second class. Drinks weren't refilled at meals, even water. You get such a run around booking speciality restaurants going between the main desk and the bar in lobby 1. As a result we were stuck with the repetitious meals in the buffets. Speaking of meals the salads were not labeled and anyone with food allergies were just out of luck. Beautiful water and relaxing but....if you don't want to watch where you're walking in fear of stepping on horse droppings then you'll want to stay by the pools.
The resort is built on hills. 1 set of steps includes 66 and another was 78. No offer from the many vans circulating the resort for a ride. Speaking of vans... watch out!! We were almost hit while standing off the walkway looking at the map. The van was off the edge on the gravel where we were standing. Guests around us asked if we were ok while the van just sped off. He certainly was going too fast. Do these workers not realize who pays their wages?
Don't bother responding with your generic responses because again it shows your lack of respect for your paying guests.

Room tip: The rooms are outdated but the ocean view are great don't know about the option plus look into it before you book i

We just returned from Panama on Monday and overall the trip was excellent. We booked and traveled with Air Transat. The Air Transat guides were very helpful while we were on our trip and were always ready to assist with whatever was needed. For the resort, I will break it down in categories (apologies for the length).

Rooms: We booked an ocean view with a king size bed, but upon arrival we received a room with 2 double beds,on the ground floor and we had a sliver of an ocean view. The room also smelled like mold and mildew, which I am very allergic to, not to mention we traveled with our 1 year old son. We had to request another room and at first they seemed hesitant, but after speaking to Milena (who is downright AWESOME!), we were able to get another room for the following day. She explained to us that ground floor rooms are normally reserved for families but once we explained our situation to her she was more than willing to help. Our next room was on the second floor and it was a stark contrast from our first room. This room was your standard resort room, clean, airy, no mold or mildew, with a beautiful king size bed and gorgeous view of the ocean. The main issue with this room-2 adjoining doors which are paper thin! Like I said, the room itself was beautiful and we enjoyed it, but traveling with a small child and having people on either side of you who were up at all hours, playing music, blasting the tv, or speaking loudly was not exactly pleasant. If you have the opportunity, request a room at the end of the hall so you might only have one adjoining room versus two. Unfortunately, I doubt there is a way to "screen" for noisy neighbours so you would be stuck with what you get.

Resort-the resort is massive! It is really long and the rooms are built up on a hill. This is a real problem for people with mobility issues, or those traveling with kids in strollers. If you have mobility issues I would recommend that you DO NOT visit this resort. As I said, all of the rooms are up a hill, and these hills are very steep, like San Francisco steep. Every time we went to and from our room to the pool, beach or restaurants, we got a real workout. The main lobby (lobby 1) is up a flight of stairs that were easily 40+. My husband had to carry our stroller up and down those stairs on multiple occasions. It was extremely inconvenient and we saw a few people in wheelchairs who were very upset. Again, if you have mobility issues, you may want to rethink this resort.

Food-While we didn't have an issue with the food and were always able to find something to eat, we would only give the food a 3/5. There was definitely something for everyone; even if you were a picky eater you could eat rice, or bread and chicken every day and survive. They did have a variety of foods to choose from and most days offered a special menu for dinner (i.e. one day was barbecue day, another was Italian, and another was Asian). The plus side, if you are an adventurous eater, you will enjoy everything! I am from Trinidad and found that Panama has a lot of similar foods, which was really great! They cook with a lot of corn and there was always at least a chicken and fish to choose from. The other issue with the food was the timing. Some of the snacks and grills weren't open during the times they mentioned so we spent some time looking around for food or waiting for things to open up. Restaurants were all pretty good. We were celebrating my birthday, along with my son's so we made it a point to eat at the a la carte restaurants. For my birthday, my husband booked a beautiful dinner on the beach at the Kontiki restaurant. While the ambiance and service were great, the food was just ok. I had the ribs, which were quite tasty, but my husband's chicken was very dry. We also tried the El Pilon (Panamanian food), Panamai (Italian food), and Cayuco (Steakhouse). Out of all of the restaurants we tried, Cayuco was the most beautiful with the best food. If you choose to eat at the Panamai restaurant (where they serve buffet breakfast and lunch), please note that is small and can become quite warm. We ate there for my son's birthday and we ended up having to strip him out of his clothes completely and a kind gentleman got us a napkin filled with ice to put on his neck to help cool him down. Everyone was extremely hot and it was made even worse with the extreme length of time we had to wait for our dinners- 40 mins! Which brings me to my next point.

Service-While service was ok, the main two issues were language and time. If you have no knowledge of Spanish whatsoever, please either re-think going to this resort, or get a Spanish dictionary. Barely (and I'm being nice by saying barely) anyone spoke English. The only spots were you could find someone who spoke English was in the lobbies, and again, only at the front desks in the lobbies. None of the servers, housekeepers, maintenance workers, bartenders, pool workers, etc spoke English. For me, because I speak Spanish, it was easy, but I ended up having to help a few people out by translating for them because they didn't. My husband literally didn't speak to anyone and would just wait for me to come so I could speak for him. The other place where this is an issue is on excursions. One of the people we met went to visit the Panama Canal (one of the excursions offered by the hotel/Transat) and she said that the tour guide barely spoke English, the entire tour was mainly done in Spanish. This can be quite problematic since you pay upwards of $100 for a tour and you have no idea what is being said about the attraction you are visiting. The entertainment done at night is also mainly in Spanish, and even when they speak English it is spoken very fast and you sometimes miss what they are saying.
The other issue with service- wait times. When you go to any of the restaurants (buffet or a la carte) you are always waiting for something. In the buffet restaurants, you are always waiting to get something to drink. In the a la carte you are always waiting for your food.

Pool/Beach- Both the pools and beach were amazing. Always lots of chairs to be found, the beach was clean with minimal vendors so you never felt harassed. The main pool is definitely loud but if you like the quiet, there are other pools to choose from. While we were there, a couple of people got stung by sting rays, so I would say be extra cautious in the water. The waves were a bit rough with a strong undercurrent but that never stopped us from going in, everyone just stayed closer to the shore.

All in all, we had a very memorable time at the Royal Decameron. While there are definitely some things that could be improved upon, we had a great time and enjoyed every minute because let's face it, its warm, there's a beach and food, what more could we really want!

Let me say firat that this was our 3rd visit to this resort. We lived it both of the prior years. We traveled as a family group of 8. Six adults and 2 toddlers. First issue was in response to my emails 2 weeks prior to our visit. I emailed to make sure our rooms would all be in the same building and that there would be a playpen in one room. We arrived to find that my daughter's room which had her husband and 2 small children were put into building 15. Right over the entertainment area.... Frankly the loudest area of the resort. Our other 2 rooms were in building 41 at almost the opposite end of the resort.
I approached the main desk on the day of our arrival as well as the second day to try and move rooms so we could be closer together. Only to be told both times that the resort was full. I call BS on this as we later met 3 other couples who were able to tip there way into moving rooms. Duhhh i should have thought to do that.

Other issue the food. In the past 2 years the food has been awesome, always something for everyone. Best part was that every meal had a small area set up for children with french fries, nachos, burger, chicken nuggets etc. This time this was not the case. The food was the same basic every meal, lunch or dinner in the buffets. And to get reservations we stood in a line for almost 2 hours to be told they could not accommodate our group.

In any event after 2 great years and a horrible stay this last time, we will be returning to the Riu

We were there Jan 9-Jan16, 2020. Beach is beautiful and swimming was great all week (waves were manageable). Twice we faced the white flag which means presence of stingrays and jellyfish. Luckily pools are great throughout the resort. The slides are quite rough, no one returned more than twice. We were a group of ten, including three children ages 7 to 12. Food was great at the buffet, everyone could find something they loved. I personally had fish everyday. We had À la carte three nights, Italian, Mediterranean and Steakhouse. We greatly enjoyed all three. The rooms were cleaned every day, with towels replaced, only a small sample of shampoo was provided. No big deal for us as we had brought all our personal care items. The staff did not understand English, French and even Spanish at the bars and buffet. I tried every morning to get a cup with half-milk, half-coffee but never succeeded, as an example. I realize that staff speak the language of the country, but they should not pretend understanding and then serve something different than what was ordered. I witnessed a few frustrated tourists because of this. In all we really enjoyed our vacation and everyone in our group agree to return. The only thing I really missed is lack of entertainment in the main lobby at night; a musician playing piano or guitar accompanied by a singer, or even some DJ music playing would be welcomed for folks like us who enjoy lingering in the lobby after a nice dinner.

Room tip: Rooms on the hill are quieter
